Chapter 7
Destiny walked back to her desk, her eyes scanning the crowded hospital corridors as she tried to focus on the pile of paperwork in front of her. The scent of disinfectant and freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air, mingling with the sound of beeping machines and muffled conversations. But her mind kept wandering back to the conversation she had with Priya earlier that day. She was excited to go shopping with her new friend on Saturday and explore the city, maybe even stumble upon some hidden gems that only the locals knew about.
As she sat down, she noticed a small photo of her family on her desk, and her heart skipped a beat. She missed them so much, but she knew she was doing what she loved, and that thought brought her comfort. She thought about her mom, who had always encouraged her to pursue her dreams, even when things got tough. She thought about her dad, who had always been her rock, supporting her every step of the way.
Just as she was getting immersed in her work, her phone buzzed with a message from Funmi.
"Hey girl, what's up? How's life in Mumbai?" Funmi asked, her message punctuated with a string of curious emojis.
Destiny smiled, feeling a pang of homesickness. She quickly dialed Funmi's number, and her friend answered on the first ring.
"Hey, Funmi! How are you?" Destiny asked, her voice bright and cheerful.
Funmi's bubbly personality sparkled through the phone, making Destiny laugh with her hilarious impressions. They chatted about everything and nothing, reminiscing about old times and sharing stories about their lives.
"I'm so proud of you, Des," Funmi said, her voice full of emotion. "You're living your dream, and I'm so happy for you."
Destiny's eyes welled up with tears as she thought about how much she missed her best friend. "Thanks, Funmi. I miss you so much."
Funmi's voice softened. "I miss you too, Des. But you're doing great, and I'm so proud of you. Tell me more about Mumbai. What's it like?"
Destiny smiled, feeling a sense of excitement. "Oh, Funmi, it's like nothing I've ever seen before. The buildings are so tall, and the streets are always bustling with people. I feel like I'm in the middle of a constant celebration. And the food...oh my God, the food is amazing! Spicy and flavorful, it's like a party in my mouth."
Funmi laughed, her voice musical. "That sounds incredible! I want to come visit you soon. What's your favorite spot in the city so far?"
Destiny thought for a moment, her mind racing with images of the city. "I think it's the beach. I've been to the beach a few times with Rohan, my neighbor and chauffeur, and it's just so beautiful. The sunsets are stunning, and the sound of the waves is like music to my ears. I feel so small and yet so connected to the world when I'm there."
Funmi sighed, her voice full of longing. "That sounds amazing, Des. You're making me want to book a ticket right now."
Destiny laughed, feeling a sense of homesickness wash over her. "You should come, Funmi. I would love to show you around. We could explore the city together, try all the street food, and dance the night away."
As they chatted, Chike joined the conversation, and the three of them had a lively phone call, reminiscing about old times and sharing stories about their lives.
Destiny's colleagues started to glance at her, and she realized she had been on the phone for a while. She quickly wrapped up the conversation, promising to call them again soon.
"Love you, guys," she said, blowing kisses into the phone.
"Love you too, Des," Funmi and Chike echoed in agreement.
Destiny hung up the phone, feeling a sense of homesickness, but also gratitude for the friends she had back in Nigeria. She knew she could always count on them, no matter where she was in the world.
As she looked around the hospital, she felt a sense of determination. She was going to make the most of this experience, and she was going to make her friends and family proud.
Just then, Rohan walked into the room, a concerned look on his face. "Hey, Destiny, is everything okay? You look a bit...distracted."
Destiny smiled, feeling a flutter in her chest. "Yeah, I'm good. Just talking to my friends back home."
Rohan's expression softened, and he smiled back at her. "I'm sure they'll be happy to hear from you again soon. Maybe we can plan a video call soon?"
Destiny's heart skipped a beat at the suggestion. "That would be great, Rohan. Thanks for understanding."
Rohan nodded, his eyes full of smiles. "Anytime, Destiny. We're all in this together."
As he walked out of the room, Destiny couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. Maybe, just maybe, there was something special about Mumbai that she was yet to discover.
The city outside was still bustling, its energy and excitement palpable, but for now, Destiny was content to sit back and enjoy the moment, surrounded by the memories of home and the promise of new adventures.
As she sat there, she felt a sense of peace wash over her. She took a deep breath and let out a long sigh.
