Chapter 1: Two worlds apart
Paul’s POV Paul West, a 25-year-old brown-skinned man standing at 5’9” with a chiseled jawline, piercing dark brown eyes, and a strong, athletic build, gazed at the photograph of his parents, Emily and James, who died in a tragic yacht accident when he was 10. His dark hair was always perfectly messy, and his charming smile could disarm even the toughest of critics. His grandmother, Agnes, raised him, but her life was cut short by a heart attack six years ago, leaving him a substantial inheritance and a sense of entitlement. After Agnes’ death, Paul dropped out of college, feeling lost. He partied, surrounding himself with friends Ben, Alex, and Jamal, and girlfriends Rachel Lee and Tanya Singh. Paul’s passion for sneakers led to “SoleMates,” a*****e that failed due to poor decisions and shady partners. Paul blames everyone but himself for their incompetence that led to the failure of his company. After the downfall of SoleMates, he dedicated his life to partying and having fun. As his 25th birthday approached, Paul anticipated his parents’ inheritance. “Finally, I’ll get what’s mine,” he thought. Ben cautioned, “Don’t rush into any decisions. You need to plan it out to avoid another downfall.” “Plan.” He hissed. “There’s no plan from now on, just enjoyment all the way,” he said. “Come on, let’s go celebrate, because in just a month, your homeboy is going to be filthy rich," he added. “Yeah…” They chorused. At the club, Paul toasted his upcoming inheritance. “One month till I’m 25, and all the lands, cars, companies, and loads of dough – the entire West’s fortune will be mine.” Friends cheered. Music pulsed. Paul spotted a stunning brunette across the room. He sauntered over, charming smile in place. “Hey, gorgeous. Want to join me for a drink?” he asked, ignoring the girls around him. Just as the brunette smiled, Sophia appeared, her face stern. “Paul West, you’re a cheat!” Sophia spat, eyes blazing. Evidence of his infidelity flashed on their phones. Paul shrugged, unfazed. “You knew the deal.” Sophia slapped him, tears streaming down her face. “You’re disgusting!” The club patrons stared, mesmerized by the drama. Then she stormed off, leaving Paul smirking. Alex approached, concerned. “Dude, are you okay?” Ben added, “Yeah, dude, that break-up was pretty rough.” Paul chuckled, eyes glinting. “I’m Paul West, the sole heir. That girl is nothing without me. You’ll see, she’ll come back crawling,” he chuckled. “Drinks on me!” The crowd cheered. Paul danced, surrounded by admirers, the brunette now by his side. Ben warned, “Slow down, Paul. You’re going too far.” Paul laughed. “I’m just getting started. I’ll live life to the fullest, with my inheritance.” As the night wore on, Paul’s antics escalated. He downed shots, flaunting his wealth. The night ended with Paul stumbling out, arm-in-arm with the brunette. Ana’s POV I trudged through the restaurant’s back door, exhausted from another grueling shift at Bistro Bliss. The scent of greasy food and stale air clung to my uniform, a constant reminder of my daily grind. As I clocked out, I couldn’t help but think about my life. I’m Ana, a 22-year-old woman with long, dark brown hair that cascaded down my back like a waterfall, and hazel eyes that seemed to sparkle even in the dimmest of lights. My petite frame, standing at 5’2”, belied my strength and determination. My curves were subtle, but noticeable, and my small nose ring added a touch of edginess to my overall look. Gayuanan, my best friend and roommate, greeted me with a warm smile. “Hey, girl! You survive?” I chuckled, peeling off my apron. “Barely.” Molly, our other friend, joined us, her bright pink hair a stark contrast to our worn-out expressions. “Girl, you need a night out!” Molly exclaimed. “We should hit the club!” I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. “You mean where those rich kids party?” Gayuanan nudged me. “Exactly! Maybe you’ll catch someone’s eye.” I rolled my eyes, memories of my ex-boyfriend, Alex, still stinging. He’d promised forever, but forever lasted only until he found someone else. The lies, the cheating, the heartbreak – it still lingered. “Not interested,” I said firmly. “I need stability…not some fleeting thrill.” Gayuanan’s expression softened. “Anna, you deserve happiness. Don’t let Alex’s mess define you.” Molly chimed in, “Yeah, you’re young, beautiful, and fierce! Get back out there!” I forced a smile, but my heart wasn’t in it. Trust didn’t come easily after being lied to. As we walked home, the city lights blurring together, Gayuanan whispered, “I’m telling you, Anna, meeting someone new might be just what you need.” “Easy for you to say,” I teased. “You’re the one with the magic dating app skills.” Gayuanan laughed. “Hey, someone’s got to keep the romance alive!” We turned the corner onto our street, and that’s when I saw him – Paul West, the infamous party boy. He stumbled out of the club, arm-in-arm with some brunette. His eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, I felt a spark. Who was this guy, and why did he seem so… entitled? Gayuanan whispered, “That’s Paul West. Rich, spoiled, and trouble.” I snorted. “Exactly what I don’t need.” But as we walked away, I couldn’t help but glance back. Paul’s eyes still lingered on me, a hint of curiosity in their depths. Little did he know, I wasn’t some naïve girl to be swept off her feet. I’d been through hell and back. I made a mental note: stay away from Paul West. As we entered our small flat, Molly asked, “So, Anna, what do you say? Club night this weekend?” Gayuanan grinned mischievously. “I’ll make sure to bring my A-game. We’ll find you someone amazing.” I raised an eyebrow, a mix of apprehension and curiosity swirling inside me. Maybe, just maybe, it was time to take a chance.
