Chapter 8 - Someone like you

"Alright," she said as she waited along the curb, tapping her foot on the ground as a mannerism. Twenty minutes were consumed by his journey through her location. "Wow!" She exclaimed in amazement. "Get in here!" He commanded politely. "That was fast." She complimented his speed. "As far as I remember, you did experience how I drive. Have you forgotten the feeling? Do you want to experience it again?" He asked the question in a calm and collected manner. "No. I don't want to mess with this wonderful car that you have. Please drive it normally." She answered and smiled once more. "You seem to be in a good mood?" He asked her as he noticed she was smiling the entire time she talked. "Yeah, a bit, thank you." "Why?" He was a bit puzzled. "Nothing." She replied while maintaining that endearing smile on her face. Instead of responding, Nathan remained silent and focused on her reflection in the rearview mirror. "Mr. Conner?" She calls as she glances at him. "Mr. Conner? That's way too formal." He repeats it with a titter in his voice. "You can call me Nathan." He continued. "Oh, that would be difficult for me to say." She answers softly. "Why?" He appeared perplexed as he looked at her. "Well, you know, you're a bachelor, wealthy, respectable man. It is wrong to call you by name, by someone like me, a prostitute, a low___." She speaks the usual. "Enough!" He cut her off abruptly. His tone became more agitated as he averted his gaze from her and focused it again on the road. "I'm sorry. Please don't get mad. I'm just trying to put myself where I should be." She sobbed and apologized. "And where is it? Where exactly that be?" His tone was still very agitated. "The distance between us is pretty obvious." "Who gives a damn?" "Someone once told me that the rich and the poor are diverse, that there are different levels, careers, and standards, and that everything is out of reach. Therefore, I must learn how to give respect to the elite, just like you." She explained. "Who in their right mind told you that nonsense?" "Someone like you." "One of your clients?" "No! I already told you the customer I only have was you and those guys, don't you believe it?" She protested. "Well then, forget about that nonsense! Call me anything you like!" He demanded to put an end to the discussion. Nathan turned the wheel in the parking lot of the nearby shopping mall. "Where are we going?" She inquired. "Let's go." He said and exited the vehicle. "Why are we here?" She asks the question once more. "I had to buy something." "Why do you have to take me along?" "Don't you like this idea of going out with me, strolling at the mall instead of sleeping with me?" "What do you mean?" She blushed. "Nothing." He imitated her answer earlier with the same word and actions. Then he chuckles and takes her hand as they walk inside the mall. Because Kimberly was out of her comfort zone, she experienced feelings of awkwardness. She has not had a romantic involvement with anyone up to this point. In addition, the atmosphere that they had today gave her the impression that they were on a date. Her hands started to feel icy and damp after a while. "What is wrong with you? I'm just holding your hand." He murmured and moved closer to her. "I don't know." She responded tensely. Nathan can't help to smile since he understood. She hasn't gone out with anyone, and he considers himself to be lucky in that regard. He drew her in closer and placed his arms around her neck in a protective posture. "What are you doing?" She asks him nervously as she tries to push him away from her. "Let's go over there!" However, he pulls her back tightly and continues walking toward the cell phone center while ignoring her questions. Every single thing he did make Kimberly feel awkward. She is at a loss for words and feels embarrassed because she believes that everyone around her is looking at them. While Nathan takes pleasure in it, watching her in this state. Dating someone who had him as their first boyfriend brought back memories of when he was a teenager. His hushed chuckle was what first drew her attention to him. "Please, stop making fun of me." She uttered shyly. "I did not. What makes you think that?" He pretended to be innocent while looking down at the cell phone rack. "Can I take a look at this one?" He asked the salesclerk. "I'll take it!" Nathan demanded and handed them his credit card after inspecting the mobile phone and determining that it appeared to meet his requirements. "Thank you, Sir." When they went outside, Kimberly disarmed him by removing his arms. Although Nathan is the taller and stronger of the two of them, he is able to quickly pull her back into his arms, but she continues to fight. Whenever she gives him a push, he immediately pulls her back into his arms and holds her there tightly. "Let's go there next." He invited, pulling her towards the clothing section this time. Nathan puts on some of the shirts in front of her and shows them to her. "What do you think of these?" He asked. "I don't know, and I have no idea what a bachelor like you wants." "In your opinion?" He presses further. "Everything you choose is cool and expensive." She answered. "Will you please stop that? Can't you see that I'm enjoying myself here?" "You're the one enjoying it, not me!" She answered a bit uninterested. He lets out an audible sigh. "Excuse me." He raises his hand to attract the attention of a salesclerk. "I'll take all of these and those three dresses over there, with her size." He said while rummaging through the clothes and pointing to the left corner where the dresses were hanging. "Okay, Sir." The salesclerk responded courteously. "What was that for?" She inquired. "Just shut your mouth; I'm already done!" He shouted annoyingly. After a few minutes, the salesclerk returned with the paper bags containing the clothes he had purchased. "Thank you very much, Sir. We hope to see you again soon!" Nathan left the shopping center in silence while maintaining a solemn expression on his face. Kimberly follows him around, feeling a little guilty because she knows she is the one who ruined his good mood. He walks straight to the parking lot and rides in his car. He hurled the paper bags into the trunk. She stopped for a brief second before getting into the vehicle. He turns the key in the ignition and begins driving at the same speed he typically does. Kimberly was forced to grab onto anything that was sturdy enough to keep her from getting knocked over. "I'm sorry to ruin such a good day for you." She started, and she waited for him to respond, but to her astonishment, he remained silent and focused entirely on the road. This was an awkward situation for her, but she continued. "I'm sorry. It's just that I'm not accustomed to walking around the mall with____." She went on, but he cut her off in the middle of it very quickly. "With someone like me! A bachelor, wealthy, respectable man! Right?" He repeated her words from earlier in the conversation. "Yes." She affirmed. "Why are you giving such a great deal of consideration to other people's viewpoints as if they care!" "That's not what I mean. It's just that ___." "The difference between us is out of reach!" He struck her again with the exact words that she had used earlier. Kimberly needs to make a statement, but she is at a loss for words to defend it because she is intimidated by how Nathan responds to it, which are the precise words she used earlier in the conversation. "Maybe you're afraid that you might fall in love with me, or more accurately, that I might fall for you?" He continued while giving her the cold shoulder. She did not speak a word and instead reflected on how he could possibly talk about love. When the only reason they were together was because of the one hundred thousand dollars he received from him in exchange for having s*x whenever he wanted, it was clear that their relationship was based solely on financial gain. "A prostitute entertained the idea of finding love? How crazy?!" She spoke to herself in her head. "Where should I take you?" He asked after yet another extended silence, Nathan's voice finally pierces the stillness. "What?" "Your address. I'm taking you home!" "We're not going into your apartment?" "It already came from you that you spoil my good mood! I won't enjoy it!" He answers sarcastically. "Sorry." She cried. "Never mind! Now, where is it?" "Just stop the car, please. I'll ride back on the bus." "Now what! Even taking you home will be a big deal!" He shouted. "You're not suited on my place___." "Whatever!" He snarls an expletive and abruptly brings the car to a stop. As soon as Kimberly walks out of the door, Nathan speeds up and follows the direction of the wind in the car. The only thing that she could do was let out a long sigh.
