Kimberly's long and exhausting Sunday has come to an end at last. It was ten o'clock in the evening when she had the idea to call Nathan before heading back home. Kimberly thought that maybe he had dumped her already after their last meeting. Perhaps he declined the deal since money isn't something he gave value to, which she is certain of. His secretary always picked up the phone whenever she dialed his number, even though she was trying to reach him. It irritates her that Amy acts as if she were Nathan's girlfriend when she asks personal questions.
The following morning around eight o'clock, Kimberly makes another trip to the phone booth in the hopes that Nathan will answer this time. However, much to her dismay, it is the same woman again.
"Oh, it's you again!" Amy begins to make fun of the situation, mocking her. "Well, just so you know, Sir Nathan frequently goes to work!" She continued and swung her chair back to her desk.
"Why?" Kimberly wanted to know.
"Well, I thought you knew him! Why does it sound like you have no idea what kind of person he is?!" She responds reluctantly.
"Kimberly, right?" Amy reiterates it, this time in a more condescending tone. "You know what? I am curious about you. Why would my boss waste his time on someone uneducated and unqualified?" Amy never hesitated about insulting Kimberly. She didn't even notice that Nathan was standing right in front of her desk.
"Connect it to my office!" Nathan shouted with his icy, terrifying voice echoing throughout the room. Amy quickly swung her chair around and then stood up.
"Good morning, Sir Nathan." She greets him in surprise.
"Now!!! " He yelled out a cautionary phrase once more.
"Yes, Sir, right away, Sir." She responds, petrified, bending her head slightly.
"Piece of advice; if you don't want to be unemployed," He cautions while walking over to her desk and getting his face closer to hers. "Mind your own business!" He yelled and glared at her with rage in his eyes.
"My most sincere apologies, Sir." She uttered the words and lowered her head.
Nathan walked inside and into his office. Kimberly was privy to every detail. She was partially awestruck and partially shaken with fear. And at this point, she was at a loss for how to begin what she was going to say. He then takes a seat in his chair and reaches for the phone.
"Now what?" He started.
"Mr. Conner... Good Mor... Morning..." She uttered and immediately began to feel foolish, considering how he could possibly have a pleasant morning after what happened.
Nathan did not bother to respond to the question. He then focused his attention on the papers that were lying on the table and read them without showing much interest.
"I didn't know you were still mad about yesterday. But I would like to apologize sincerely. Please try to understand. It's just that I don't get it. I don't know what you're trying to opt for." She had a lot of pauses waiting for him to respond, but he didn't speak a single word.
There was yet another extended gap in the conversation; all she could hear was tapping a pen on the desk like a timer.
"I'm sorry for bothering you, Mr. Conner. I'll hang up then." She continued talking.
"Let's meet." He finally speaks.
"Really? What time is it?" She smiled to herself and got excited
"Now. Right now. I'll pick you." He answered calmly.
"Now? Why such a hurry? It's still early___." She was intrigued, but he quickly silenced her by interjecting.
"You know what, I'm sick of hearing your questions!" Nathan's tone was irritated as he raised his voice once again.
"I'm sorry." She suddenly felt teary.
"I'm sorry!!! I'm sorry!!! I'm sorry!!!" Nathan was now shouting, unable to contain his anger. "Why do you always apologize for everything? Yeah! Maybe you're right! You're nothing but a pitiful, poor nonsense woman! Isn't it? " He continued with his heated tone.
"Yes, I know," Kimberly replied, tears forming in her eyes, and she must clench her teeth and bite her lips to fight her crying.
"Yes!! You know!? That's what you know and what you believe in!" He was still angry when she responded. Then he placed his hand on his head while he loosened his tie at the same time.
"What's your reason?" Before he spoke, he lowered his voice and took a moment to compose himself by taking a deep breath.
Then there was another pause.
Kimberly is concerned that the tears threatening to roll down her cheeks at any moment will prevent her from opening her mouth. Her mouth is quivering slightly. However, she is required to speak in order to explain.
"I'm... work...working..." Her voice cracks as she tries to speak, and tears roll down her face uncontrollably. She wipes it off immediately.
"Working? Like what?" He inquired with a sense of wonder.
"I'm working at the restaurant." She blew her nose before answering, and it was at that moment that Nathan realized that she was crying. He then positioned the phone within easy reach and leaned back in the chair.
"Restaurant?!" He repeats suspiciously.
"It's not bad as you think." She tries to sound strong enough to defend her side. "It's a fine dining restaurant." She added.
"Where?"
"Mackie's Restaurant, along Sunset Drive."
"As a service crew?"
"No, I'm a dishwasher."
"Dishwasher?!"
"Yes."
"Why are you so serious about your desire for money? Do one hundred thousand dollars not satisfy you?
"You don't know anything about me. I know you're a rich man___."
"Stop it! Will you at least try to stop stating our differences repeatedly!" He interrupts.
"Sorry."
"And that apologizing thing! Can't you come up with a better word?"
"Is there anything else I can tell you?"
"Answer my question. Why are you so obsessed with money?"
"I'm not obsessed."
"Then why?"
"I need it for a living___."
"A hundred thousand for a living? What kind of life do you have?"
"You don't understand."
"Yes! I don't, so explain it!"
Knock! Knock! Knock!
They are interrupted in the middle of their conversation by a knock on the door.
"Hold on."
"I apologize for interrupting, but the chairman is looking for you." It was Amy, his secretary.
"Fine! I'm coming!" He answered.
"I had to go. I'm quite busy today. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" Kimberly is befuddled.
"Call me tomorrow when you're off to work." His tone was a command, and then he hung up.
Nathan proceeded directly to the chairman's office.
"Good Morning, Mr. Chairman!" He greets him formally.
"Sit down." His father is cheerful as he maintains a steady posture on a swiveling chair. Nathan sat down opposite him in silence.
"I want you to go to our branch in Manchester, my plans for the nearby site I bought have already been decided, and there will be a meeting regarding the properties. I want you to handle it."
"Sure. When do you want to leave?"
"You're going alone."
"You're not coming?"
"You are going to be the President's representative."
"Why me?"
"You already know that I want you to learn as much as possible about the company and gain as much experience."
"And you think I'll be able to deal with it now?"
"The fact that you've been performing so exceptionally well at your job has surprised me over the past few days. The project proposal that you presented to me was, without a doubt, outstanding. I want you to present this matter and discuss it with our business partners."
"You did like it? " He unbelievably asked.
"It works out perfectly! It would be a fantastic idea to install an amusement park along the length of our mall. Where are people interested in going next? Naturally, the arcades, rides, and games, everything else that you mentioned, were an original idea. I think it would be better if it is an amusement park instead of another mall extension, as it is inexpensive and doesn't take as much time to construct. In addition, if it were another mall, it would put our tenants in a tough position when deciding where to locate their branches, and I would prefer something else. Consequently, it's wonderful. Agree?" His father stated graciously.
Nathan has a broad grin on his face. Hearing complimentary comments from his father is a great boost to one's self-esteem.
"Yeah, thanks!" He said it with a smile.
"My secretary made the reservation, and you will arrive in Manchester later tonight. Have a safe and enjoyable trip!" His father got to his feet and extended his hand for them to shake.
"Thanks, Dad!" He expressed his gratitude.
"You're doing great, son!" His father has a pleasant smile as well.
Before leaving the office, Nathan made sure to leave a message for Kimberly with his secretary. He warned her to treat Kimberly nicely or else he'll fire her.
"Yes, Sir." Amy answered in a trembling voice.
