THE CHAIN LOVERS

The sun was just beginning to set over the bustling campus of Abuja University. The newly admitted students were rushing to and fro, eager to finish their last-minute assignments, and head home for the day. Among them was Charles, a tall and handsome young man with a determined look in his dark brown eyes. He was always focused and driven, determined to make the most of his college experience. As he walked towards the main entrance of the university, he noticed a girl struggling to open the heavy doors. Her name was Lizzy, and she was a petite and delicate-looking girl with fiery red hair and bright green eyes. She seemed to be having a hard time as she tugged on the door with all her might, her books threatening to slip out of her arms. Without a second thought, Charles rushed over to help her. As soon as their eyes met, something inside him stirred. There was an instant connection between them, as if they had known each other for years. "Let me help you with that," Charles said with a charming smile, effortlessly opening the door for Lizzy. "Thank you so much!" Lizzy exclaimed gratefully, a blush creeping up on her cheeks as she met his gaze again. Their shoulders brushed against each other as they both entered through the doorway, sending a warm and electrifying sensation down Charles' spine. As they made their way through the crowded hallway, they exchanged small talk, and Charles couldn't stop drawing to Lizzy's bubbly and friendly personality. They soon found out that they were both enrolled in the same English literature class, and from that day on, they became inseparable. They would sit next to each other in class, share notes and study together in the library, and even grab lunch together in between classes. Their friendship grew stronger with each passing day, and Charles found himself looking forward to spending time with Lizzy more than anything else. But as much as he enjoyed their friendship, he couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something more between them. As the months went by and their friendship continued to flourish, Charles kept wondering if he was falling in love with Lizzy. He would catch himself staring at her for a little too long, getting lost in the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed or the way her hair fell perfectly over her shoulder. But, he was afraid to confess his feelings, fearing that it would ruin their friendship. He couldn't bear the thought of losing Lizzy, even if it meant he could never be with her romantically. One day, as they were sitting in the campus garden after class, Lizzy turned to Charles with a thoughtful expression on her face. "You know, I would never have made it through this class without you," she said, smiling warmly at him. Charles felt his heart skip a beat at her words. "I feel the same way," he replied, his gaze lingering on her lips. Just as he was about to gather the courage to tell her how he truly felt, Lizzy's phone rang, interrupting their moment. She excused herself from taking the call, leaving Charles alone with his thoughts. As he watched her walk away, Charles couldn't deny his feelings any longer. He knew he had to tell her the truth, even if it meant risking their friendship. But just as he was about to follow her, he spotted something on the ground next to his feet. It was a small, beautifully wrapped box with a note attached to it. Curious, Charles picked it up and read the note. "To my dearest Lizzy, thank you for being my brother's best friend and always being there for us. We couldn't imagine our life without you. I hope you like this small token of my appreciation. Happy birthday!" Charles felt his heart drop as he realized that today was Lizzy's birthday. He had completely forgotten, too caught up in his own feelings to remember. His heart sank even further as he noticed the return address on the package - it was from a guy named Emma, Charles' elder brother, and Lizzy's long-time crush. Feeling defeated, Charles slowly made his way back to the garden, not wanting to interrupt Lizzy's phone call any longer. When she came back, she immediately noticed the package in his hands. "Oh, that's from Emma, your brother," she said with a smile, taking the box from Charles and opening it eagerly. "He remembered my birthday. Can you believe it? "Your brother is very nice and caring." She smiled. Charles couldn't find the words to respond. His heartbreak at the thought of Lizzy seemed to be with someone else and his brother. But he couldn't blame her. He had hesitated for too long, but why his elder brother? As if sensing his inner turmoil, Lizzy placed a hand on his arm, her eyes filled with concern. "Is everything okay, Charles?" Taking a deep breath, Charles mustered up the courage to finally tell her the truth. He poured his heart out, confessing his feelings for her and how he regretted not telling her sooner. Lizzy's eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, Charles feared that he had ruined everything. But then she smiled, a beautiful that he had never seen before. "I had no idea you felt that way, Charles," she said softly, reaching for his hand. "I've been waiting for you to say something for the longest time." Charles couldn't believe his ears. "Wait, you mean... Do you feel the same way?" Lizzy nodded pretendfully, a blush creeping up on her cheeks." I've fallen for you, too. "I just didn't know if you saw me as anything more than a friend," she said while shaking her head sadly. Relief and joy flooded through Charles as he pulled Lizzy into a tight embrace, knowing that he had finally found the love of his life. Suddenly, Lizzy burst into tears. She cried out to Charles that she never believed Charles would see her as a lover. That she completely considered him as a brother, and now, he disappointed her. She sobbed into torrented tears and left swiftly while Charles followed. Lizzy's tears haunted Charles long after she left, echoing in his mind like a painful melody. He couldn't shake off the feeling of regret and sadness that enveloped him at that moment. He realized how much he had taken their friendship for granted and wished desperately for a chance to turn back time and make things right.
