Chapter Thirteen : Shattered Promises

2000 Words
The world outside was washed in silver gray mist wrapping the cliffs in silence The sun fought to rise but its light was swallowed by the storm clouds that still loomed above Mirabel stood at the edge of the bunker the wind tangling her hair the cold biting at her cheeks She could taste the salt from the sea and the metallic tang of fear that hung in the air Behind her Triumph struggled to his feet his wounds bound in rough fabric his breathing shallow but steady He had refused to stay behind even after Cole insisted “I started this,” Triumph had said quietly his eyes distant “I’ll finish it with you” Cole loaded the last of the gear into their pack his expression unreadable “We leave now before the next wave hits The facility’s three miles east through the ridge We move fast stay low and don’t stop for anything” They set out into the gray morning their boots crunching against the wet gravel The road wound like a scar through the rocks and each gust of wind carried the faint hum of old machinery Mirabel’s mind drifted to Triumph’s confession the truth behind the mask he had worn for years The man she thought she knew had been both protector and deceiver her enemy and her salvation all in one “Mirabel” Triumph’s voice broke through her thoughts “When this is over—if we make it out—you need to know something” She didn’t look at him “Save it for after We’re not done yet” Cole shot him a warning glance “You’ll get your chance to confess after we survive Voss” They walked in silence for a while the path narrowing into a steep descent At the base of the ridge the ground opened into a long valley where the remains of old comm towers rose like broken teeth against the horizon The facility was somewhere beyond those ruins hidden beneath the earth where secrets went to die As they approached the first tower Cole raised a hand for silence He crouched low scanning the terrain through his scope “Motion sensors ahead Two of them about twenty meters apart We’ll have to go around” Triumph moved beside him analyzing the setup “Voss upgraded security since I was last here He knows we’re coming” Mirabel exhaled sharply “Then we don’t waste time sneaking He’s expecting us We make noise draw him out” Cole frowned “That’s suicide” She met his eyes her voice low but steady “No That’s strategy He thinks he controls the game It’s time we flip the board” Cole stared at her for a long moment then nodded “You’ve changed” Mirabel gave a small grim smile “Loss does that to people” They advanced through the ruins the wind howling through hollow metal frames like the cries of ghosts Suddenly Triumph stopped “Get down!” A flash of light tore through the air a pulse round slamming into the tower beside them sending sparks and debris raining down They dove behind cover Cole returning fire “Two sentries northeast! Automated turrets!” Triumph gritted his teeth crawling to a control panel half-buried in rubble “Keep them busy I can loop the system” Mirabel covered him her shots precise and sharp Each echo from her rifle cut through the chaos She moved with purpose no hesitation no mercy Within minutes Triumph hacked the terminal the whir of the turrets dying into silence He looked up breathing hard “We’re clear for now” Cole clapped him on the shoulder “Remind me to never doubt your old tricks” They pressed forward the ruins giving way to a massive steel gate half-hidden beneath vines and rock The air was colder here heavier as if the earth itself was warning them to turn back Mirabel placed her hand on the rusted surface feeling the vibration beneath her palm “He’s here” Triumph keyed a sequence into the console beside the door A sharp click echoed followed by the low rumble of gears turning The gate slid open revealing a corridor bathed in blue light The inside was worse than she imagined Cold sterile hallways lined with glass panels behind which machines pulsed and flickered Voss’s legacy built from shadows and stolen lives Cole’s jaw tightened “He turned it into a lab” Triumph’s voice was barely a whisper “He turned it into a weapon” They moved deeper into the facility every step echoing against metal floors Every hallway led to more questions—photographs of failed experiments names erased files encrypted beyond reach Mirabel’s stomach twisted as she recognized one of the faces on the wall—a woman with dark curls and gentle eyes Her mother Her breath caught “He knew her” Triumph froze “Mirabel—” She turned on him anger and disbelief burning in her voice “You said she died in the first wave You said you didn’t know” His eyes were heavy with regret “I lied because the truth would have destroyed you She worked for him before she realized what he was doing She tried to stop him and paid the price” The world tilted beneath her feet Every memory every half-truth collided like shards of glass “You let me believe she abandoned us” Triumph’s voice broke “Because it was easier than telling you I failed her” Cole stepped between them “Enough We deal with Voss first Then we finish this conversation” They reached the central chamber the heart of the facility A single figure stood before the glowing mainframe his back turned to them A man in a white coat the hum of power swirling around him “Voss” Triumph said quietly The man turned slowly a faint smile on his face “You finally brought her to me” Mirabel’s grip tightened on her weapon “You’re not getting what you want” Voss’s eyes gleamed “Oh I already have it child The truth The chaos The betrayal You carry it all” He gestured to Triumph “He was supposed to protect you from me and yet here you are walking willingly into my hands How poetic” Triumph raised his weapon “It ends now Voss” The older man laughed softly “You can’t end what I began You can only choose how it breaks” He pressed a button on the console and the floor beneath them trembled Lights flickered alarms blared Cole shouted “He’s overloading the core!” Triumph ran toward the control panel “I can stop it!” Mirabel covered him firing at the guards that burst through the doors Cole joining beside her Their movements were chaos and precision all at once Triumph worked furiously wires sparking under his hands “Almost there—” A shot rang out Triumph staggered back a crimson bloom spreading across his side Mirabel screamed “No!” catching him before he fell Voss smiled coldly “Every creation must destroy its maker before it learns to survive” Mirabel’s tears mixed with blood as she raised her gun “Then watch me survive” She fired three times each shot finding its mark Voss fell his expression frozen between shock and pride The alarms grew louder the core reaching critical mass Cole grabbed Mirabel’s arm “We have to go Now!” But she wouldn’t move she knelt beside Triumph who struggled to speak “You did it Mirabel You broke the chain” “Stay with me” she whispered “Please” He smiled weakly “Some promises are meant to be broken so others can be kept” The light consumed the room and then—silence When Mirabel opened her eyes she was outside the facility the sky split open by light Cole dragging her through the ash and smoke behind them the mountain burned She turned back tears streaking her face “Triumph—” Cole’s voice was rough “He bought us time That’s what he wanted” She fell to her knees the roar of the storm fading into the hollow ache of loss The man who had lied to her had also saved her The man behind the mask had finally kept his promise Days later when the fires had died and the world had grown quiet again Mirabel stood on the cliffs overlooking the sea A single dog tag hung from her hand the name etched faintly into the metal—Triumph Hale She whispered into the wind “I’ll keep fighting Not for vengeance For truth” The ocean answered with a whisper a promise carried through the waves The air was thick with smoke and ash the world painted in gray and red Mirabel opened her eyes to the sound of the tide dragging debris across the shore Her ears rang her head throbbed and for a moment she couldn’t remember her own name Then it came back all at once—the explosion the fire the scream of metal tearing apart the look on Triumph’s face just before everything went white She forced herself upright coughing hard Her hands were scraped and bloody the smell of salt and burnt wiring clinging to her skin “Triumph!” she called her voice raw “Cole!” The wind howled back but no answer came She stumbled through the wreckage pieces of the tunnel scattered across the beach twisted wires and shattered glass glinting under the weak light of dawn The ocean had swallowed most of it leaving only fragments of what used to be their fight their hope Then she saw him Triumph lying half-buried in the sand his body still his face pale Her knees hit the ground beside him “No no no come on please" She pressed her hand to his chest searching for a pulse Faint slow but there He was alive Tears burned her eyes as she leaned closer “You’re still here… you stubborn fool" His lips moved barely a whisper “Told you… I don’t die easy" Mirabel let out a shaky laugh half sob half relief “Don’t you ever do that again" Cole’s voice broke through the wind from behind her “You two really know how to ruin a quiet morning" She turned to see him limping from the rocks bruised but alive a grin hiding the exhaustion in his eyes He dropped beside them letting out a rough exhale “Everything’s gone… the data the base… Leona" Mirabel looked toward the horizon smoke rising faintly in the distance “She didn’t make it?" Cole shook his head slowly “No one could’ve survived that blast" Triumph stirred again opening his eyes just enough to see the dawn breaking over the water “Then it’s over" Mirabel watched the sunrise bleed over the waves the unease still there like an unhealed wound “We’ll find somewhere safe" she said Cole scoffed “Safe doesn’t exist" “Then we make it exist” she replied A faint static rose from the cliffs growing louder rhythmic like a heartbeat Triumph’s eyes darkened “It’s not over she planned this” Cole tensed “Leona?" The static sharpened a hidden voice whispering the same words again and again “Directive Nine… continues." The three stood by the shore the wind cold against their skin Mirabel’s heart ached knowing the war wasn’t over only changing form She met Triumph’s gaze “We keep moving” “Together” he whispered Cole raised his rifle eyes on the horizon “Then let’s finish it” They walked on the tide erasing their footprints as the ocean whispered Not yet
