Chapter twelve: The Man Behind the Mask

2000 Words
The night had not yet ended but the fire in the old comm station was dying its glow casting strange shadows across the cracked walls The storm outside had slowed into a whisper of rain but the air inside was thick heavy with the weight of things unspoken Mirabel sat beside Triumph her eyes fixed on the flickering light that danced over his face his breath shallow but steady Cole was at the console scanning the last feed from the signal grid his fingers tense over the controls Then the hum started soft at first like a whisper through static The screen flickered once then again until lines of interference twisted and formed a shape Mirabel stood her pulse quickening the faint outline of a man appearing through the distortion half his face swallowed by darkness half lit by a pale light Cole frowned his voice low “Someone’s overriding the channel" The voice that followed was smooth calm and cold enough to make the air feel sharper “I was wondering how long it would take you to find this place" Mirabel’s breath caught " Who are you" The man on the screen tilted his head slightly the movement deliberate precise "Names are for those who still have faces” he said "You can call me what you’ve always called me in your nightmares" Triumph stirred his hand trembling as he reached toward the screen "No” he whispered “It can’t be" Mirabel turned to him " You know him" He nodded slowly his expression torn between disbelief and rage "That’s Director Voss" Cole’s eyes widened " Leona’s father" Triumph’s voice cracked " The one who created Directive Nine" The image sharpened and for a moment the man’s face was clear older now the lines of power carved deep into his features One eye was covered by a metal implant the other burned cold and knowing "You should have stayed buried Agent Triumph” he said "You were never meant to survive the purge" Mirabel stepped forward her voice trembling with fury "You turned him into a weapon and then tried to erase him You killed your own agents" Voss gave a faint smile " Sacrifices are necessary to maintain order The world runs on blood not mercy" Cole slammed a fist against the console "You call murder order" The Director’s gaze shifted to him I call it control something none of you ever understood You think leaking my files will bring justice but all it will bring is chaos Mirabel’s hands clenched "Then maybe chaos is what the world needs" Triumph’s body tensed every word from Voss slicing through him like a blade "Where is Leona" he demanded Voss’s smile faded replaced by something darker "Leona was weak She thought truth could save people She forgot that truth destroys more than it saves" Mirabel’s throat tightened " What did you do to her" Voss leaned closer to the camera his face filling the screen "She made her choice And now you will make yours Deliver the drive or watch what’s left of your world burn" The screen flickered again the signal threatening to collapse Triumph pushed himself up ignoring the pain “You’ll never get it" Voss’s voice turned colder “You still think you have a choice" Then the feed cut the room plunged into silence except for the low hum of the machines and the storm whispering against the walls Mirabel’s chest heaved with anger “He knows where we are" Cole nodded “We need to move now" But Triumph didn’t move He sat there eyes fixed on the dead screen “He’s not bluffing He never does" Mirabel crouched in front of him “Then tell me what he means about Leona What choice" Triumph’s voice was barely a whisper “She was part of Directive Nine too She helped design the encryption system that hides the agency’s operations She believed if she built it she could control it But Voss used her code to kill everyone tied to the project" Mirabel shook her head “And now he wants that drive to finish it" Triumph looked up at her pain and determination burning in his eyes “He won’t stop until we stop him" Cole started packing the gear “Then we find Leona before he does" Outside the storm was breaking the first hint of dawn bleeding through the clouds as they left the comm station The air smelled of rust and salt and the wind howled through the cliffs like a warning Mirabel walked ahead her boots crunching over wet gravel Triumph leaned against her for support his steps slow but steady Cole covered their rear eyes scanning every shadow They followed the coordinates on the monitor east through the ruined coast until the path gave way to a narrow gorge where the remnants of old military outposts stood half buried in sand The sun was just beginning to rise painting the sea in broken gold Cole stopped suddenly holding up a hand “Movement up ahead" Mirabel ducked behind a rock peering through the mist Shapes were moving beyond the ridge black suits armed with pulse rifles “Agency scouts" she whispered Triumph gritted his teeth “He sent them already" Cole nodded “We can’t fight our way through not with you like this" Mirabel scanned the cliffs her gaze landing on a rusted cable line stretching across the ravine “There” she said “That line leads straight to the upper pass If we can get across it’ll take us closer to East Haven" Cole stared at her “That thing hasn’t held weight in years" Mirabel met his eyes “Then we don’t fall" She was the first to go strapping the drive to her chest before hooking the old clip onto the cable The metal groaned under her weight but held She moved hand over hand across the gorge the wind tearing at her clothes Triumph followed next his movements shaky but determined Cole came last covering them from behind Halfway across the line snapped with a sharp metallic cry Mirabel lunged forward barely catching the edge of the cliff Her fingers burned as she pulled herself up gasping Triumph grabbed her arm helping her over Cole cursed behind them “Go I’ll find another way around" Before she could protest gunfire echoed from below bullets slicing through the mist "Cole" she shouted He fired back two precise shots dropping the first agent before ducking behind a rock "Don’t stop Keep moving I’ll catch up" Mirabel’s throat tightened but she nodded dragging Triumph toward the pass Their feet pounded over the wet rocks as shouts rose behind them The sound of the sea grew distant replaced by the low hum of engines They reached the edge of the forest a dense wall of fog and pine that swallowed them whole Triumph collapsed against a tree breath ragged "He’ll be fine" Mirabel whispered more to herself than him “He always is" They walked until the cliffs were only a memory and the sun hung pale above the treetops The forest was eerily quiet every branch and shadow alive with secrets Triumph leaned heavily on her his face pale but his eyes still burning with purpose “Leona’s safehouse is close” he said “We’re almost there" But before Mirabel could respond a voice cut through the mist low and familiar "You shouldn’t have come here" She froze turning slowly toward the figure emerging from the fog It was a woman her hair short her clothes torn the faint glint of a weapon at her hip Leona Voss Mirabel’s breath caught ''Leona" The woman’s eyes were hard cold " "You should have left this alone" Triumph took a step forward " You’re alive" Leona’s gaze softened for only a second before hardening again "Alive isn’t the same as safe" Mirabel looked between them " Your father tried to kill you" Leona nodded " He still will He doesn’t forgive betrayal" Triumph pulled the drive from his pocket holding it out "This is everything we found The proof the system’s still active" Leona didn’t take it " You don’t understand It’s not just files It’s a control key If he gets it back he can reactivate Directive Nine from anywhere" Mirabel’s voice trembled “Then we destroy it" Leona shook her head “You can’t It’s linked to every major defense grid on the continent If it’s destroyed it triggers a failsafe that wipes out millions of digital identities Everything gone" Triumph’s voice was hoarse “Then what do we do" Leona looked at him her eyes full of sorrow "We finish what we started We end him" From behind them branches snapped heavy boots crunching through the forest Voss’s soldiers had found them Cole appeared out of the fog covered in dirt and blood "They’re coming in from both sides" Mirabel gripped her weapon " Then we fight" Leona drew her pistol her face set " "No more running no more ghosts" The forest erupted in gunfire flashes of light tearing through the mist Triumph leaned against a tree firing short bursts his vision blurring Mirabel stayed beside him covering his flank Cole fought like a storm brutal and efficient Through the chaos Voss’s voice echoed through a comm speaker cold and distant "You could have been gods instead you chose to be martyrs" Leona shouted back " We chose to be human" Then the sound of a grenade cut her words short The explosion threw Mirabel to the ground her ears ringing Triumph was on the ground beside her bleeding again Cole’s voice shouted something distant before fading into static When the dust cleared Voss himself stepped through the smoke his coat untouched his mask reflecting the fire around him "You should have stayed buried" he said again his tone almost gentle Leona raised her gun "You first" But before she could fire he shot first The bullet hit her shoulder spinning her back into the dirt Mirabel screamed firing blindly hitting the mask It cracked revealing the face beneath For the first time she saw him not as a man but as something hollow half machine half flesh his eye burning with cold light "You can’t kill what’s already been rebuilt" he said Triumph dragged himself up blood running down his arm "Then I’ll settle for breaking you" He fired once hitting the implant Sparks burst from the side of Voss’s head the man staggering back Cole charged from behind tackling him into the mud The two struggled until another explosion tore through the trees throwing everyone apart When the smoke cleared Voss was gone only the sound of the wind and rain remained Mirabel crawled toward Triumph her hands shaking "Are you okay" He coughed weakly "Still breathing That counts" Leona knelt beside them clutching her wound "He’s not dead Not yet But we hurt him That’s enough for now" Cole limped over his face bruised " So what now" Leona looked at the drive still clutched in Triumph’s hand "Now we finish it on our terms" Mirabel met her eyes " Then tell us how" Leona took a deep breath " We take the fight to the capital to the core of Directive Nine We expose him before he rebuilds" Triumph managed a faint smile " Then it’s not over" Leona looked at him with a mix of guilt and pride “It never was" The storm had passed but the sky was still gray and heavy The forest smelled of smoke and gunpowder and the ground was littered with the ghosts of a battle that was only the beginning Mirabel helped Triumph to his feet her voice soft but firm "We end this together" He nodded "Together" And as they disappeared into the mist the world felt like it was holding its breath again waiting for the final reckoning
