ChapterTwo:The Storm After The Silence

768 Words
Elena’s heart sank. Her stomach twisted into knots. Her phone buzzed non-stop with unknown numbers. Her school’s social board had sent a warning letter. She hadn’t even opened it yet. She pressed her face into her pillow, tears already soaking the sheets. Her mother stood by the bed, clutching the remote. “Elena, what did you do?” she whispered. People in their neighborhood began to act strange. Whispers followed them to the store. Their land-lord knocked, asking if she was “the girl causing trouble on TV.” Some neighbors accused her mother of pushing Elena into the spotlight. “Now she’s a wanna-be who bit more than she could chew,” one woman muttered loud enough to be heard. Meanwhile, across the city... Adrian Black sat in his study, staring at the paused image of Elena on the TV screen. Her eyes were defiant. Bold. Her posture upright. Confident. His jaw clenched. His assistant, Max, stood nearby with a tablet, trying to keep his tone calm. “Sir, maybe we should just let this go." She’s just a student, nobody looking for clout. Probably just wants her five minutes of fame.” Adrian didn’t respond. His eyes stayed glued to the screen. Max hesitated. “I mean… young girls say wild things all the time. She’s on scholarship, right? That should tell you enough. People like her can’t handle the pressure.” Suddenly, Adrian stood. “Shut up, Max!” he barked. Max froze. Adrian pointed at the screen. “Wanna-be’s go to the internet, Max. Not private billionaire seminars. This one... she's calculated. She knew what she was doing. Look at her—confident. Calm. She didn't flinch.” Max swallowed hard. “Still... she’s hiding now. Maybe she’s already learned her lesson.” Adrian chuckled darkly. “No. If she was a joke, she wouldn’t be hiding. She knows who she is challenging. And now, she’ll pay for it.” He stepped closer to the window, pulling the curtain aside to stare out at the city below. “I will break her,” he muttered. “She’ll suffer." She’ll work for me, and I’ll humiliate her until she learns to never speak against Adrian Black again.” Max blinked. “Work for you, sir?” Adrian smirked. “That’s right." If she’s as smart as I think she is... she’ll crawl right into my hands.” Not even heard the lecturer walk in. Her head throbbed, and she’d barely eaten anything since that night. Everything inside her was screaming: Elena, why didn’t you just shut up? Why did you ask that question? But it wasn’t just about that one question. She remembered clearly how Adrian looked at her before he walked out. That silent fury. The fire in his eyes. He didn’t say a word, but she could feel it—he wasn’t letting this slide. And then, her phone buzzed. She hesitated before checking it. UNKNOWN NUMBER: You’ve got guts. Let’s see how long they last. Her blood ran cold. “Elena Hart,” the lecturer called suddenly. She jumped. “Come see me after class.” Of course. --- The office was cold. Too quiet. The Dean looked at her like she was a broken rule walking around in human form. Another man—someone from the school board—sat beside him with a stern face. “Elena,” the dean began, folding his fingers, “You’re one of our best students. You’re on a full scholarship, and you’ve had an excellent record... until now.” “I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said softly, heart-pounding. “You embarrassed one of the country’s most powerful business people. "At a school-sponsored event,” the board-man snapped. “Do you have any idea what this could mean for our reputation?” “I only asked questions.” “Questions that went viral,” the Dean added. “Questions that were perceived as an attack.” “So what do you want me to do?” she asked, now standing. “Apologize for being intelligent? For not kissing his shoes like everyone else did?” “Watch your tone, Miss Hart.” “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I just... I didn’t mean for this to blow up.” They exchanged glances. The board-man stood up. “We’re not here to destroy your future, but let’s just say—keep your head down. No public appearances, even if it's a school thing. No interviews. No podcasts. Just... stay in line.” And that was it. Just like that, they dismissed her. ---
