Bound by Fate

The world felt different after the Blood Moon. For Lyra, the air itself seemed alive — charged with whispers that only she could hear. The moon no longer frightened her; it called to her. And beneath her skin, the mark it left pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat — and his. Every morning since that night, she woke to the same strange ache in her chest, the echo of warmth that lingered from Kael’s touch. His scent — cedar and smoke — clung to her senses no matter how far she ran. But she knew it wasn’t just her imagination. They were bonded. A connection as ancient as the moon goddess herself now linked her to the most powerful Alpha in Lunaris — her teacher, her protector… her forbidden mate. --- Kael hadn’t been the same either. The once-calm, controlled Alpha had grown restless, his temper razor-sharp. In training halls, his students whispered of his sudden silence, his sharp glares, his wolf simmering just beneath his skin. He avoided Lyra during lessons, barely looked at her, but she could feel him — every time he entered a room, her pulse raced; every time his voice echoed, her body responded as if called by instinct. He was fighting it. She could tell. And it tore her apart. --- Days passed. Then, one evening, the academy summoned all advanced students for combat trials — a brutal test where students fought in pairs under strict supervision. Lyra stood at the edge of the training grounds, adjusting her gloves with trembling hands. She had hoped to avoid notice, but fate — cruel and deliberate — had other plans. “Lyra Vale,” the announcer called, “you’re paired with… Instructor Kael Draven.” The crowd erupted in murmurs. Even Kael’s golden eyes flickered with surprise before his expression hardened again. “You may begin,” the announcer said. --- They circled each other slowly, the tension thick enough to suffocate. Kael’s voice, calm but edged with something dark, cut through the air. “You shouldn’t have come.” Lyra met his gaze, her silence defiant. He lunged first — fast, precise. She blocked, barely, her arms trembling from the impact. The crowd gasped. He wasn’t holding back. Again, he came at her — stronger this time. She ducked, twisted, landed behind him, and swept his legs out. He hit the ground hard but rolled up instantly, eyes flashing gold. “You’re learning,” he growled, almost approvingly. Her lips curved into a faint smile. She didn’t need words to tell him I had a good teacher. But then his expression shifted. In a flash, he pinned her — her back hitting the ground, his weight above hers, his hand braced beside her head. Their eyes locked. The world fell silent. The mark on their wrists began to glow. Gasps rippled through the crowd, but Kael didn’t move. His breath was shallow, his control slipping. Every instinct screamed to claim her — to mark her fully under the gaze of the moon. “Enough!” Headmistress Selene’s voice cut through the air. The spell broke. Kael stood, releasing her abruptly, his jaw tight. “Training’s over.” He walked off before anyone could speak. But as Lyra rose, clutching her wrist where their marks had burned, she knew — something inside him had changed. Something he could no longer hide. --- That night, she found him in the Moon Garden, standing beneath the ancient tree that glowed faintly under the stars. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said without turning. She stepped closer, her heart hammering. Her lips parted, but no sound came. Her voice — trapped as always — betrayed her. Kael turned then, his expression softening when he saw the tears glistening in her eyes. “Lyra…” Her fingers trembled as she reached for his wrist, her mark glowing faintly in response. She placed his hand against her chest — where her heart beat furiously beneath his touch. Her eyes pleaded with him. You feel it too. He did. Goddess, he did. “I’ve tried to fight it,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “But when I saw you today, when I felt your power — it’s like every part of me knew I was already yours.” She shook her head, her tears falling freely. “I shouldn’t want you,” he said, stepping closer until their breath mingled. “You’re my student. My responsibility.” His hand slid to her cheek, tilting her face up. “But every time you look at me, every time your heart beats like this… I can’t remember why I’m supposed to stay away.” The air around them shimmered again — faint threads of silver and gold twining through the night. The bond between them pulsed, alive. Then Kael leaned down, his lips hovering just above hers. “Forgive me,” he whispered — and closed the distance. The kiss was nothing like either expected. It wasn’t soft or hesitant. It was desperate — years of restraint shattering in an instant. His hands gripped her waist; hers tangled in his shirt. The world melted away. The mark on their wrists flared, burning brighter until it seared a pattern across their skin — a completed bond, sealed by touch and moonlight. When they broke apart, both were trembling. Kael’s eyes glowed faintly gold, his wolf side barely contained. “You’re mine now,” he said hoarsely, “in every way that matters.” Lyra’s lips parted — a breath, a sound — and for the first time, a whisper escaped. “…Kael.” He froze. Her voice. Rough, fragile, but real. The dam inside her had broken, and the first word she’d spoken in years was his name. Kael’s throat worked, emotion choking him. “Say it again.” She smiled faintly, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Kael.” He pulled her against him, wrapping her in his arms as if shielding her from the entire world. “The goddess help me,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to hers. “I’ll burn everything that tries to take you from me.” --- But while the moonlight blessed their union, shadows moved beyond the academy walls. Far in the northern forest, a cloaked figure stood before a pool of black water, the reflection swirling with Lyra’s face. “So the mute girl has found her voice,” the figure said, his voice low and venomous. “And the Alpha has claimed what was forbidden.” He raised his hand, dark energy coiling around his wrist. “Then it’s time we take it all away.” --- That night, Kael dreamed of fire. Of Lyra crying his name as the academy burned around them. He woke with a start, his mark burning hotter than ever — a warning. He didn’t know it yet, but destiny had already turned. Their love wasn’t just fate — it was a spark that would ignite a war between light and darkness. And Lyra’s true power… had only begun to awaken.
