Chapter One Whispers of the Mind ~~ARIEL'S POV~~ “You should be thrown out!!” The raging words of Bran Dorne, my foster father came at me. Not only were his cruel words creeping into my fragile heart, but the heavy saliva that escaped from his mouth washed upon my hair as he spake without control. “I wonder why I ever agreed to pick you up and bring you into this family!!” He shouted. I sighed inaudibly. That wasn't the first time he would remind me that I am not actually his daughter. So I was already used to listening to that line on a daily basis. However, it was different this time around. This time, he knew what I was and hated me immediately. “Ariel, you are just so empty. No magic, no inner demon, nothing. Just a beauty without anything to offer,” he insulted. Those cold words of his sent firesparks to my soul and I felt down almost immediately. How is this my fault? Why would I be treated in this manner all because of magic? Yes, magic was the order of the day in Bronzeville but not everyone had the gift. Ugly to realize, my foster family now knows I am one of those kinds. People like me are made to work like slaves, a harsh reality sent down from the messed up government in power. Or safe to say, It had always been like this. “How I wish…” The only sentence I now found solace in brooding on. “If there is nothing good in this body of yours, I would make you work your entire life out,” he said as he walked out, hitting the door hardly from behind. That was the beginning of my stay in hell. He literally meant every word. Not only did I work, I was bossed around. “You know you don't have to do the dishes today…just let me help you out,” Ava's calm voice interrupted whilst I was in the kitchen that cold evening. She was practically the only one that warmed up to me amidst the other Dorne girls. “Not to worry. I wouldn't want your father to get angry at me, please,” I said in a haste. “Don't worry. He wouldn't. I know how to go about it..You could just man the door and watch out as I handle the rest of the dishes for you,” she responded in a dramatic tone. “And if someone tries to come in?” I asked with a smirk. “You simply forgot what I am capable of,” she whispered. I chuckled in response. Ava had the magic of changing her voice to whosever she willeth. Now I understood how she got more jobs from the “Taskforce” company she works for online. She is quite a handful. I was about accepting her kind offer when Layla, another of the Dorne sisters came in and I adjusted almost immediately. “Hufff…” she scoffed as she got in. “You are still here?” She spoke out in a loud tone. “I…I…the dishes are a lot, Layla,” I sttutered in response. “What does the weakling have to say?” Layla rolled her eyes at me. “Layla…but I haven't done anything to get such statement from you,” I replied all of a sudden. The shock. I wonder where I got the courage from. I guess I must have forgotten my position so quickly and now I feel I earn a respect. She didn't hesitate one second to raise a hand and before I knew, a loud slap hit my face and there was this heavy resound in my ears. “You ungrateful b***h! How dare you speak back at me? Have you suddenly forgotten the worthless piece of s**t you are?” She blurted out. I got struck and I fell to my knees with tears to my face. Layla was, by association, a sister to me but what I got from her and the rest was nothing but pure hate. She hit the plates off my hand and splashed water on my face. “Layla, what did she even do to you?” Ava interrupted. Her voice brought me grace. I wonder what could have hit me next if she didn't come to the rescue with those loud questions. Layla hissed at her without giving an actual response and turned to me again. It was at this moment, I felt this energy like a whoosh of air land softly on the hair on my skin and everything suddenly become still. It was as though I stopped time but no…everything was still moving but I was communicating with a strange energy. Words. I could hear the words in her head even before she spoke them. “No…not again,” I muttered in my head. I've been having this feeling for some time now but I couldn't let anyone know about it. It usually come like a flash and the next thing I know, I could hear things. Not just things… Thoughts. The thoughts of anyone I wanted but right there in the kitchen, it came without me trying to let it happen. I was inside Layla's mind and I already knew what she was thinking in her head before she gave her parting words. “I just want to kill her and make her disappear,” Layla's mind whispered to me and my eyes widened in surprise. “Uhn?” I let out uncontrollably. Layla kept staring at me while those thoughts grew in her head. “Layla, just leave please. Pity the poor girl,” Ava's mind whispered to me even from where I sat. That moment, their minds became a treading ground for me as I sat there, still trying to wipe off the tears piled up in my little eyes. Maybe this wasn't bad after all but there was no reason for me let it out. If they knew I had magic, Lord knows what's they could use me for instead. “I’d rather keep on like this,” I thought in my head. All of a sudden, Ava's hands snapped me back into reality. “Ariel!!” “Where did you suddenly vanish to?” “Layla is gone,” she added as she tried to help me to my feet. I was about to respond when her mind whispered to me also… My eyes widened in shock as I listened. ……
