Eleanor
“What the f**k are you doing here?”
Of course he had to be here.
Of course Ezra Nairethorne, had to be in the one place I had decided to go, to stop thinking about him.
“Do you two know each other?” Ava asked, her tone low, as she gazed from Ezra, to me.
We had literally just walked in, when Ezra approached us, two bottles of what looked like alcohol, in his hands.
I narrowed my eyes at Ezra. “Do we know each other?” My tone was taunting.
My link was blocked, so whatever he wanted to say, had to be said in front of Ava, since he had to question me, in front of her.
Ava shifted uncontrollably next to me, when Ezra continued to throw an angry stare my way, not even acknowledging her.
“I need to speak to you..” Ezra placed the bottles in the hands of a passing student, his eyes never leaving me. “..alone.”
He reached for me, and when Ava tried to block him, finally turned to her.
Even I would have cowered under his gaze, but Ava stood her ground. “Now, you might be one of the most feared Alpha in this school, but you don’t treat a woman that way. I don’t know what the relationship between you two is, but if you want to talk to her, you have to ask nicely.”she had her head held up as she spoke.
I was amazed. Not everyone could stand up to Ezra. And I knew that she knew, he was way stronger than she was.
Ezra’s eyes flashed with surprise, but then I saw something else in it.
Something I couldn’t recognize because it was gone in the next second and replaced with a scowl, directed at me.
“What?” I quizzed, still standing behind Ava. “You heard her. Ask nicely.”
I mean, I didn’t want to talk to him.
Not after what had happened earlier, but I knew Ezra. He was going to whisk me onto his shoulders if it came to that.
To my surprise, he plastered on a fake smile. “Can we talk alone, Eleanor?” It was one of the few times he had called me by my name.
And it did feel strange. But it also sounded like he had rolled his tongue around each syllable.
I let out a shaky sigh and placed a hand on Ava’s arm. “I’ll see you in a bit.”
She gave me a look that said you have a lot of explaining to do, before leaving.
“I see you and Yohan’s sister are close, huh?” Ezra asked, his expression turning back to the scowl from earlier.
I folded my arms across my chest, “Is that why you wanted to talk to me alone? Because I’m very sure you could have just asked that in front of Ava.” My eyes fell to his lip, and I cursed under my breath and looked away.
That had been a mistake. And it was never going to happen again.
“Can we step outside for a moment?” His tone was surprisingly soft, making me look up, back at him to see that his scowl was now gone, and replaced by an unreadable expression.
“Fine.” I huffed and allowed him lead me away from the noise to a balcony just close by. “Whatever you want to say, please say it fast. I need to get back to Ava.”
Gosh. I was hurting.
Again.
What made Zach’s different, was the mating bond.
If I removed that, the cold rejection from Ezra felt worse.
“You shouldn’t be in a place like this.” Ezra stated, breaking the silence between us. When I opened my mouth to reply, he shook his head. “There are drugs, booze, and this are not the things you like, Eleanor.”
Once again, out of the blue, he was berating me. Just like he had done in the past. “Maybe you do not know the things I like, then, Ezra.” I retorted, angry. “I am a grown woman, and you don’t need to baby me, anymore.”
His eyes went from confused to wide. “You think that’s what I am doing_”
“That is exactly what you are doing!” I cut him off before he could finish. “You always butt into my life, playing Mr. protector, and I do not need it! I’m grown enough to pick my own battles!” I knew I was lashing out, but he deserved it. And more.
Ezra looked at me like I had grown a horn. “Beetle you haven’t even fought a battle. And forgive me, but it is my job to protect you. To shied you from the things I know are not good for you!”
“Like you are were doing when you left me stranded outside of the academy?” My voice was slightly raised, but I didn’t care. “Like you were doing when you kissed me earlier then turned your back on me, leaving me to walk away, feeling like an i***t? huh?” I spat, my gaze searching his. “I’m sorry, but it seems you are doing a very bad job at protecting me and you should take a seat and let me handle myself!”
Ezra’s mouth opened and closed a couple of times, and I let out a laugh.
“What? Cat got your tongue?”
He shut his eyes briefly, letting out a growl. “I’m sorry for doing those things to you, Beetle, but maybe I am in fact, protecting you.”
I wasn't sure whether to find what he said funny or just smack him across the face at his words.
I stalked closer, holding his gaze. "And what is it you are protecting me from?"
"From me."
