Chapter 1
Inside the chairman’s office of Emes Group, the white light poured down onto a long wooden table. Gabriel sat upright, eyes fixed on the document Lily Rober had just placed before him.
“Mr. Wader!” Lily’s smile was cold, “This is the divorce agreement. Just sign it, and everything will be neatly settled. The car, the house, ten million dollars—all of it will be yours.”
Gabriel’s brows furrowed slightly. His voice was low, yet cutting.
“Divorce? Are you joking? Three years of marriage with Marina… and now it all comes down to a piece of paper and some cheap numbers?”
Lily tilted her head, eyes filled with disdain.
“Don’t be naïve. This marriage has long been a burden. You are not worthy to stand beside Chairwoman Dhara. She is at the pinnacle of her career, while you… will forever remain a shadow.”
Silence fell before Gabriel let out a heavy, suffocating laugh.
“How amusing. A shadow, you say? When your family was drowning in debt, it was this so-called shadow who shielded you. And now… everything has changed, hasn’t it?”
Unfazed, Lily jerked her chin toward the magazine on the table.
“Look for yourself. The whole of Geven is chanting her name. And you? No one even bothers to remember you. So sign it, and at least keep what little dignity you still have.”
The door swung open. Marina Dhara stepped in, her high heels striking the marble floor with an icy rhythm. The entire room seemed to freeze.
“Gabriel.” Her voice rang steady, deep, without a tremor. “Don’t drag this out any longer. This ends here.”
Gabriel’s gaze lingered on her, eyes conflicted.
“Is that all? Is it that easy for you to let go? I thought… at the very least, there was something genuine between us.”
“What do you want to hear?” Marina crossed her arms, her stance proud and unyielding. “I’ve already repaid you for what you once did. Beyond that—I need more than what you could ever give me.”
“Money, power…” Gabriel shook his head. “Do they mean that much to you?”
Turning toward the glass wall, Marina’s eyes reflected the glittering city lights. “They are everything to me. And you will never understand.”
In that instant, Gabriel gave a bitter smile. He pressed the pen down with force, signing his name onto the divorce papers with resolute strokes.
“You’re right. I cannot understand how someone could trade away their heart for ambition. But remember this, Marina… once lost, some things can never be found again.”
He set the pen aside, removed the wedding ring from his finger, and spoke softly:
“I only want back the crystal necklace. It was the only gift my mother left for my wife.”
Marina faltered, just for a heartbeat, then unclasped the necklace and placed it on the table, her voice cold.
“Take it. From now on, we are strangers.”
Gabriel fastened the necklace around his neck, his eyes darkening. Without a backward glance, he strode out of the room.
The hallway stretched endlessly ahead. He had barely drawn a breath when Bonnie Fidelia and Egan Dhara blocked his way before the elevator, like predators lying in wait.
Bonnie’s voice was harsh:
“Gabriel, where’s the ten million Marina gave you? Don’t think you can get away with it.”
He looked at her with nothing but contempt.
“I don’t want a single cent from any of you. If you want to know, ask Marina.”
Egan stormed forward, face flushed with rage.
“Stop pretending! You’re nothing but a leech clinging to women for money. Hand it over, or I’ll—”
He snatched the necklace from Gabriel’s neck, raising it mockingly.
“At least this thing still has value.”
“Give it back!” Gabriel’s roar thundered like a storm.
Egan sneered and hurled it to the ground. The sound of shattering crystal echoed through the corridor.
Gabriel’s face went deathly pale. His eyes flared crimson as he lunged, striking Egan with a blow so fierce it sent him sprawling.
His breath came in ragged bursts, his voice seething through clenched teeth:
“Scum. You’ve just ignited something your family will never be able to extinguish.”
Bonnie stumbled backward, her heart hammering. In her eyes, Gabriel was no longer the abandoned husband—he was a storm awakened, ready to devour everything.
Egan lay dazed, unable to rise. Gabriel yanked him up by the hair and struck him again and again, Egan’s face quickly swelling under the blows.
“How dare you hit my son?!” Bonnie shrieked, rushing forward.
“Get out!” Gabriel’s glare froze her in place, his eyes blazing with a ferocity she had never seen before.
Those two words, spat out like thunder, left Bonnie trembling. The man she once knew as gentle and patient now resembled a beast cornered, ready to tear apart anyone in its path.
Panic gripped her, and she screamed theatrically: “Help! Help! He’s trying to kill my son!”
Within moments, Emes Group’s security team came running.
“What happened, Mrs. Dhara?” the captain asked urgently.
“Ben! Arrest him now! Gabriel attacked my son—I want him punished immediately!” Bonnie shrieked, pointing at Gabriel.
Ben frowned, then gestured sharply. The guards surrounded Gabriel, eagerness flashing in their eyes. Everyone knew this was their chance to earn favor with the chairwoman’s mother.
“What are you waiting for? Beat him!”
But just as the iron batons were about to fall, a cold female voice sliced through the commotion.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
The crowd froze. A woman in a dazzling silver gown strode in, four impeccably dressed bodyguards at her back. Her sharp gaze and commanding aura stilled the air.
“Caryln Rishima…” someone whispered. The guards swallowed hard.
News of the Rishima heiress was well known: at twenty-two, she had already built her own empire. Beauty and brilliance alike had made her legendary.
“Mr. Wader, are you alright?” Caryln walked straight to Gabriel, ignoring the stares burning into her.
“You are…?” Gabriel narrowed his eyes, his fury ebbing.
“Caryln Rishima. Dominic sent me.” Her smile was sharp, layered with meaning.
The guards wavered, paralyzed. At Caryln’s snap, her four bodyguards advanced. Though few in number, their military-like discipline forced the Emes security to retreat.
“Please.” Caryln extended her hand.
Gabriel said nothing. He bent down, gathering the shattered pieces of the necklace before leaving with her. None dared stop him.
“You useless fools!” Bonnie screamed at the security, but the captain only gave her a helpless look.
“Mrs. Dhara… she’s Rishima. To lay a hand on her is suicide.”
“Shut up! You dare let my daughter lose face like this?” Bonnie’s rage turned her face crimson.
Just then, Marina and Lily appeared. Marina froze when she saw Egan bloodied and broken.
“Gabriel!” she gasped, her voice trembling. “Did he do this?”
Bonnie clung to her, weeping.
“Marina! Look at your brother—beaten savagely by that man, all for a worthless trinket! If I hadn’t intervened, I might be dead too!”
Marina’s hands clenched. Three years of marriage had shown her Gabriel’s rare temper. Yet here stood Egan, bloodied, with a dozen witnesses and her own mother’s accusations.
“The security team saw it all. Gabriel struck first,” the captain declared firmly.
Lily stepped in, voice righteous but sly.
“Even if there was some misunderstanding, Gabriel had no right to attack your brother. His choice of violence speaks for itself.”
Conflict clouded Marina’s eyes, but at last they hardened. She pulled out her phone and called Gabriel.
Inside a silver Bentley, Gabriel frowned at the sight of her name flashing on the screen. He answered.
“Gabriel, I need an explanation,” Marina’s voice was ice.
“An explanation for what?”
“Did you hit Egan?”
“I did. But—”
“So it’s true!” she cut him off, fury trembling in her tone. “You did this just to get back at me for the divorce? You think beating my brother proves you were right?”
Gabriel fell silent for a long moment, disappointment surging like a tide within him.
“Marina Dhara,” his voice rasped, “Do you truly believe I would strike without cause? Have you ever once asked why I did it?”
“No matter what he did, you had no right!” she snapped.
Gabriel let out a bitter laugh, heavy with grief.
“So in your eyes, one mistake is enough to erase everything. Three years… mean nothing.”
“Gabriel, I’m giving you one last chance. Go to the hospital and apologize to Egan. If you do, I’ll let it go. If not—”
“If not, then what? Will you call the police? Or hire someone to kill me?” His voice dropped, hard as steel.
“You…” Marina’s breath faltered. Before she could finish, the line went dead.
The phone slipped from her trembling hand. For the first time, the woman who had always reigned supreme in the business world revealed chaos in her eyes.
