Chapter 1: The Sacrifice in the Crossfire
The scent of gunpowder and copper was something Alessia had been born into, but tonight, it choked her.
Rain lashed down in sheets against the rusted shipping containers of Pier 47, illuminated only by the frantic, strobe-like flashes of muzzle fire. The drop was supposed to be a standard weapons exchange with the Russians. Instead, it was an execution.
"Reloading!" Alessia shouted over the deafening roar of automatic gunfire, slamming her back against a rain-slicked concrete pillar. Her chest heaved, her black tactical gear plastered to her skin.
A few feet away, Matteo—her fiancé, her Underboss, the man she had loved since they were bleeding orphans on the streets of Palermo—fired blindly over a rusted barrel. His usually immaculate suit was ruined, his jaw clenched in tight, panicked lines.
Behind them, Enzo and Luca, Matteo’s most trusted capos and men Alessia had personally trained, were laying down suppressive fire. They were outnumbered three to one. The Russian Bratva had cornered them.
Alessia’s fingers trembled slightly as she slapped a fresh magazine into her Glock. It wasn't fear that made her hands shake. It was the secret resting deep in her womb.
One month.
She had taken the test yesterday. She was pregnant. The heir to the greatest Mafia empire in North America was carrying the next generation. She had planned to tell Matteo tonight, after the deal, with a bottle of vintage Barolo and the rare, soft smile she reserved only for him.
"We need the evac chopper now!" Alessia yelled into her comms, taking out a Russian thug who dared to flank them. "Matteo, signal the extraction!"
Matteo pressed two fingers to his earpiece, but his expression suddenly shifted. The ruthless, calculating Underboss vanished, replaced by a pale, frantic man.
"Lily? Lily, breathe! What’s happening?" Matteo yelled into the comms, his voice cracking.
Alessia frowned, firing two more precision shots. Lily?
Lily was a civilian. A fragile, doe-eyed barista Matteo had "saved" from a loan shark two months ago. Since then, Matteo and his men had treated her like a porcelain doll, installing her in one of the family’s downtown penthouses. Alessia had tolerated it, believing Matteo just had a soft spot for strays.
"They're breaking the door!" Lily’s hysterical, sobbing voice bled through the comms, loud enough for Alessia and the capos to hear. "Matteo, please! There are men with guns! I'm so scared!"
"Hold on, Lily! I'm coming!" Matteo’s eyes were wild. He turned to Alessia, the rain plastering his dark hair to his forehead. "The Russians sent a hit squad to the penthouse! Lily is trapped!"
Above them, the heavy, rhythmic thrum of Apache helicopter rotors cut through the storm. The family’s evac chopper descended, hovering just over the edge of the pier, throwing a hurricane of wind and water over them.
"The chopper is here!" Enzo shouted. "Boss, we have to go! If they get into the penthouse, Lily is dead!"
"We all get on the chopper, we drop you off, and I hold the line here!" Alessia commanded, moving toward the landing zone.
"There's no time for a detour!" Matteo grabbed Alessia’s arm, his grip bruising. "It will take twenty minutes to route back! By then, Lily will be in pieces!"
"She's a civilian, Matteo! We are in the middle of a warzone! You can't leave your flank open!" Alessia stared at him, unable to comprehend the madness in his eyes.
"She doesn't know how to hold a gun, Alessia!" Matteo roared over the wind. "She’s not like you! She’s weak! She’s terrified!"
"And what am I?" Alessia snapped back, the rain mingling with the dirt on her face.
"You're the Queen!" Enzo interjected, his eyes pleading. "You're indestructible, boss! You can survive anything! Lily will die of shock just hearing the gunshots!"
Indestructible.
The word felt like a slap. To them, she wasn't a woman. She wasn't human. She was just a weapon, forged in blood, incapable of feeling pain or fear. They didn't see the exhaustion in her bones. They didn't know about the tiny, fragile life growing inside her.
"Matteo, look at me," Alessia pleaded, her voice cracking for the first time in ten years. She grabbed his tactical vest. "Don't go. Not without me. I have something to tell you. I'm... I'm—"
Bang!
A bullet ricocheted off the pillar inches from Matteo’s head.
"I can't let her die, Alessia!" Matteo shoved Alessia's hand away. The movement wasn't violent, but the emotional force behind it shattered her ribs. "Hold them off! We’ll come back for you!"
Without another word, Matteo turned and sprinted toward the lowered ramp of the helicopter. Enzo and Luca followed him without hesitation, their weapons lowered, their focus entirely on saving the fragile dove waiting in her gilded cage.
Alessia stood frozen behind the concrete pillar. She watched the man she loved, the man who had promised to stand by her side until death, leap onto the chopper. He didn't even look back.
The helicopter banked sharply, the downdraft nearly knocking Alessia off her feet, and sped away toward the glittering skyline of the city.
She was alone.
One woman against thirty heavily armed Bratva soldiers.
The gunfire intensified, the Russians realizing the heavy hitters had fled. Alessia gritted her teeth, drawing her second weapon. If she had to fight her way out of hell, she would do it. For herself. For her baby.
She stepped out from cover, firing with lethal, mechanical precision. One fell. Then another. But she was just flesh and bone.
A sharp, deafening c***k pierced the air.
Alessia gasped. The air vanished from her lungs. She looked down in slow motion.
A sniper’s bullet had torn through the Kevlar mesh at her side, ripping directly into her lower abdomen.
The pain wasn't immediate. At first, it was just a terrible, hollow heat. Then, the agony exploded, radiating from her womb like white-hot iron.
Her knees buckled. She collapsed onto the cold, unforgiving concrete, the puddle of rainwater beneath her instantly blooming with dark, thick crimson.
"No..." Alessia whimpered, dropping her guns. Her blood-soaked hands flew to her stomach, pressing desperately against the gaping wound. "No, no, no... please."
But she could feel it. She could feel the life draining out of her, washing away into the dirty rain.
Heavy combat boots splashed against the puddles, closing in on her. The Russians were laughing, speaking in low, guttural tones. They had the great Alessia, the untouchable Mafia Queen, bleeding out like a slaughtered pig on the docks.
With a ragged, agonizing breath, Alessia dragged herself backward into the shadows of two overlapping shipping containers. Her fingernails tore, bleeding as she scraped against the asphalt.
She pulled her phone from her vest with trembling, blood-slicked fingers. She hit speed dial.
Matteo.
It rang. And rang. And rang.
“This is Matteo. Leave a message.”
He had turned off his comms. He was too busy comforting Lily to hear the mother of his child bleeding to death.
Another wave of excruciating cramps tore through her abdomen. Alessia clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle her scream, tears finally spilling over her lashes, mixing with the grime and rain.
She lay there in the dark, clutching her ruined womb, listening to the footsteps of the men coming to execute her.
In that agonizing silence, surrounded by the smell of her own dying blood, something inside Alessia broke. It didn't shatter into chaotic pieces; it snapped cleanly, leaving a void.
The desperate, unconditional love she had harbored for Matteo for ten years bled out onto the concrete. The camaraderie she felt for Enzo, Luca, and the men she had bled to protect, evaporated into the storm.
They thought she was a monster. They thought she didn't need saving.
Fine.
Alessia slowly lowered her hand from her mouth. The tears stopped. Her breathing shallowed, becoming terrifyingly calm. She looked at the blood coating her hands—the blood of her unborn child.
When she lifted her eyes to the dark, stormy sky, the desperate, pleading woman was gone. Her irises, usually warm like melted amber, had turned into dead, frozen glass.
You want a ruthless Queen? she thought, her fingers slowly tightening around the handle of her boot knife. I will show you exactly what a ruthless Queen looks like.
