Chapter 1 – Holiday Disaster
Jessica groaned as she stared at the Christmas tree she had spent nearly an hour trying to set up.
“Why do I even try?”
she muttered under her breath, stepping back to admire her handiwork.
But of course
…the moment she moved one step away, the entire tree wobbled, swayed, and tumbled forward with a loud crash, scattering ornaments across the living room floor.
Jessica winced.
Great.
Day one of holiday decorating, and I’m already a disaster.
As she knelt to pick up the shattered ornaments, a soft knock sounded at her door
“Hey… are you okay in there?”
a familiar voice asked.
Ethan, her childhood neighbor and someone she barely saw outside of holiday greetings, poked his head in.
He was holding a small toolbox and wore that calm, slightly nerdy smile that made him look harmlessly adorable.
“I… yeah. Totally fine,” Jessica said quickly, brushing pine needles off her sweater.
“Just… the tree attacked me.”
Ethan stepped inside, carefully dodging the scattered ornaments.
“Looks like it… I can help?”
Jessica felt a pang of reluctance. She was perfectly capable of cleaning up a fallen tree. She didn’t need him. Or anyone.
But before she could argue, she reached for the tree to lift it
—and something strange happened. The string of lights flickered wildly, then all the bulbs lit up perfectly in a dazzling display, twinkling as if on cue.
Jessica blinked.
“Uh… what?”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“Wow… did you—uh—do something just now?”
Jessica froze.
I didn’t do anything!
She shook her head, hoping he hadn’t noticed her weird little
“luck” moment.
“Why now?” she thought. “Why do I always get… magic… in the worst moments?”
She shook it off, muttering sarcastically. “It’s nothing. Just… holiday miracle, I guess.”
But deep down, she knew it wasn’t a miracle. Somehow, her terrible holiday luck always seemed to flip at exactly the wrong—or sometimes right—moment, and today was just the start.
As Ethan began carefully helping her re-position the tree, Jessica noticed her heart beat a little faster. Not in a romantic way—she was annoyed—but… she couldn’t deny that something about his presence seemed to trigger a strange, bubbly feeling.
Before she could think too much, her clumsiness struck again. She tripped over a stray ornament and fell face-first into the pile of tinsel. Tinsel flew everywhere—onto Ethan, across the floor, and somehow wrapped around the tree perfectly.
Jessica groaned. “Of course. This is my life.”
Ethan laughed, helping her up.
“You’re… something else, Jess.
But I kind of like it.”
Jessica froze. Did he just say that? No, no, she wasn’t into him.
This was ridiculous.
She was just… unlucky.
That was all.
Yet, a small spark of magic—or maybe luck—made the lights twinkle brighter, and a single ornament slowly levitated into place on the top of the tree, like it had been carefully guided by invisible hands.
Jessica sighed. Yep. Definitely magical. Definitely not normal. Definitely going to be a long holiday season.
