Useless Son-in-law
"Leonard, bring my stuff," a woman shouted as she threw several bags of groceries from the car on the floor.
The woman was Sherri Gibson, who had just returned from shopping with her best friend, Briana Rich.
Leonard, who heard his wife scream, rushed to pick up the grocery bags on the floor. He brought them to the living room, where Sherri and her best friend rested.
"Turn on the air conditioner. Get us something to drink," Sherri ordered without looking at her husband.
Briana, who was sitting next to Sherri, immediately replied. "Bring me a cold soda."
Leonard didn't dare to argue. After all, he was only there as a son-in-law living in his wife's family home. He hurriedly went to the kitchen to get a drink.
After three years of marriage, they never looked like a typical couple; in fact, the two never touched each other.
Leo slept on the floor at his wife's behest daily, with no thick blanket or mattress. Only a thin cloth was wrapped around his body to ward off the cold night air.
Sherri hated Leonard because he was considered a useless man. He treated her like a maid. He started by washing clothes, washing dishes, cleaning the house, and cooking.
He never complained about it because Sherri and her mother-in-law would scold him once a complaint was heard from him.
Not long after, Leo returned with the drinks his wife and friend had requested. He placed it on the table.
Briana watched Leo from toe to head, but something could have been more interesting, especially with his shabby clothes.
"Sherri, it's great that you want to keep this kind of man. Even though he's still quite useful in this house," Briana sneered in disgust.
Sherri snorted. "You mean Leo? Let's not talk about him. I'm sick of having to see his face every day."
Briana hurriedly waved her hand. "All right, forget it. We have something important to talk about. I heard your company is going through a crisis right now?"
Sherri sighed heavily. She nodded her head. "That's right. My family company's fashion business has only been running for about a year and has lost tens of millions of dollars. We need 50 million dollars to pay the workers and some vendors. They've only given us a week."
Briana was surprised. "Where are you going to get that much money in a week? I'm sure the bank won't give it to you."
Sherri was about to reply when she realized Leo was still listening to their conversation.
"What do you think you're doing here? Go away. Wash all my dirty clothes!"
Leonard didn't argue; he immediately headed to the laundry room.
Sherri hated Leonard for being a useless man just living off of her.
Leo had gotten used to his wife's abusive treatment for three years, and what hurt most of all was that he had fallen in love with her even though it was badly needed.
Honestly, Leonard came from the most respected Robbins family in Vale Hills. Leo bought 500 million dollars worth of Southeast Gold Company shares in cash three years ago. The shares were equivalent to eight percent of the company's total shares.
His decision angered hundreds of his family members, as well as the directors of his company. Leo was accused of wanting to destroy the company by embezzling funds for personal use.
All shareholders and the board of directors agreed to kick Leo out of the company. His parents were also expelled by the Robbins family, considered a disgrace for having a scheming son like Leo.
Over the past three years, Leo has experienced the bittersweetness of life. Friends, relatives, everyone tried to stay away from him. To live, he was forced to become a live-in son-in-law.
As for him being from a famous family, Leo had never brought it up to anyone, not even his wife. He only introduced himself to Sherri's family as Leonardo.
Leo put the dirty clothes into the washing machine and his clothes because tomorrow he had an appointment to attend the reunion of his school friends.
While daydreaming, his cell phone suddenly rang. A message landed on his screen. Leo quickly read it and was astonished to find out who sent the message.
Wasn't this the Robbins family number?
Even more shocking, after reading the content of the message.
"Mr. Leo, the Robbins family is experiencing a financial crisis, and I need your help."
Leo frowned in confusion. The Robbins family was going through an economic crisis. Why even contact him? Hadn't they kicked him out three years ago with only a thousand dollars in his hand to hold on to?
She had not yet found the answer to the question in her mind. Another message came into his cell phone.
"Mr. Leo, I'm asking for your help. Only you can save the Robbins family from this crisis."
Leo was getting more and more confused. He ventured to reply to the message. "How can I help you? I have nothing now after being expelled from the Robbins family.
"Mr. Leo, I know that the shares you bought three years ago have increased in value many times. It's already greater than the value of the wealth that the Robbins family had before.
Leo almost dropped his phone after reading the message. He hurriedly took out a black card from his wallet. It had been three years since he had used the card.
To make sure, Leo immediately called the bank that issued the card to confirm.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Robbins. Can I help you?" asked a woman with a sweet voice.
"Quickly check my account balance!"
"Yes. Please wait a moment,” the woman said slowly.
In less than five minutes, she said, “Mr. Leonard Robbins, I cannot access your account directly; given the large balance, you will need to come to the bank directly. Our chairman instructed that just in case for fear of someone misusing it. After all, you haven't used the card for a long time. Please go to the VIP section of the bank and show your ID card. Only then can you find out the current balance in your account directly.”
Leonard immediately switched off the call without waiting for the bank officer to finish his sentence.
Haha! What did he say? Is the balance too big?
Leonard looked very happy with the news he had just received. The investment he made three years ago has now doubled. The Robbins family even contacted him directly for financial help. He doesn't even know how much he made. If that's the case, it means it's doubled.
Leonard unconsciously laughed quite loudly because he was too happy, making his voice heard in the room where his wife was. The two women even listened to his conversation on the phone.
Briana Rich, who was also listening, couldn't help asking, “Sherri, did you hear him call the bank to ask about the balance in his account?”
Sherri smiled and sneered at her. “Don't mind him. I give him ten dollars every day. Maybe he secretly deposited it in the bank.”
“Hahah... Sherri, you have a dog in your house.” Briana laughed quite loudly. “The maid makes a bigger salary. You're crazy!”
The person being talked about suddenly appeared and walked up to Sherri, saying without hesitation. “Sherri, you need 50 million dollars. I'll give it to you.”
“Hahah!”
Upon hearing Leonard's offer to her best friend, Briana could no longer contain her laughter. She looked at him with contempt, then crossed her legs.
“Leo, are you out of your mind? How did you get ten million dollars in one week? Do you think the ten dollars you collected daily is something to be proud of?”
Leonard turned his gaze to Briana, who was still laughing at him. But he didn't say anything until she said again.
“If you can earn 50 million dollars in one week, I'll kiss your feet thrice.”
“I see, huh?” Leonard grinned. “Then remember what you just said.”
“Of course, I'll remember. I'll call you young master if you get it, but...” Briana smiled sarcastically. “If you can't come up with 50 million dollars within one week. In addition to being a maid in this house, you'll have to be an assistant to both of us.”
That meant Leonard would have to follow the two women wherever they went and do whatever they told him.
“Deal,” Leonard replied without hesitation.
Briana was satisfied with Leonard's answer. She couldn't stand this man anymore and wanted to get him out of the way of her best friend, Sherri. They didn't belong together.
Sherri, who had been listening, could no longer stand their conversation. “Stop it! Don't brag anymore.” Sherri looked very angry. “You better finish your work before my mom comes back.”
Hearing his mother-in-law mention it, Leonard got goosebumps and chose to nod and leave immediately. Before getting to the laundry, Leo still heard Briana swearing at him and belittling him. He didn't care; he already had a way of silencing his wife's best friend, who always insulted him.

Leonard couldn't fall asleep at night because of the thought of the amount of money he had kept him awake all night. He tossed and turned.
By morning, Leonard was just about to fall asleep, but his mother-in-law's voice suddenly sounded so loud in his ears that he assumed it was a dream.
“Leo, wake up! Take Sherri to work.”
The one who was called was still dreaming in his sleep; he thought the voice he heard was his mother-in-law's voice in a dream, so he continued sleeping. Finding Leonard not coming out, Caithlyn, Sherri's mother, came into the room and kicked Leo's body impatiently.
“Are you deaf or dumb, huh? I told you to take Sherri to the office. Can't you hear?” Caithlyn said coldly.
It could be said that the mother-in-law's face was very beautiful. She was entering middle age. She was still elegant despite not wearing fancy clothes like today.
Cathlyn was wearing loose pajamas, but it still couldn't cover the curves of her beautiful body. Her hair was still wet from her shower. There was no need to talk about how tempting she looked right now.
Leonard, who was kicked, immediately got up from the floor in a daze; he looked at his mother-in-law with a stupid look.
“Madam, what's wrong?”
“Still asking what's wrong? You are deaf, aren't you?” Cathlyn shouted with both hands on her waist. “I told him to take Sherri to her workplace right now.”
Leonard was surprised to hear his mother-in-law's order. He had never left the house with his wife for three years because it was considered embarrassing. Now, his mother-in-law was telling him to take Sherri to her workplace.
A few seconds later, Sherri also came to Leonard. She was already dressed in formal clothes, her legs jerking anxiously. “Hurry up, are you deaf? Or don't you want to drive me?”
“Fine, fine!” Leonard hurried and changed his clothes. Then, he rode the electric motorcycle and drove Sherri to his company.
