Chapter 1: Two Worlds, Two Destinies
Mumbai-
Amidst the glittering buildings of Mumbai, luxurious hotels, and expensive bungalows built by the sea, there was a name that made even the biggest businessmen lose color from their faces upon hearing it. Behind that name was not just wealth and power, but a terror so deep that people would think a hundred times before coming in front of her. That name was Avni Rajvansh.
At the mere age of twenty-five, Avni had built such a huge empire that from famous industrialists of the country to big businessmen sitting abroad dreamed of working with her. Her companies were spread across many countries. Luxurious hotels, large buildings, expensive business deals and many huge companies were a part of her empire. But this was only that part of her identity which the world could see. Her real strength was hidden in that dark world, where people trembled at her name.
It was famous about Avni that she made her own decisions and once she made a decision, it was not easy for her to change it. People who worked with her knew that she never forgave those who deceived her. Very few people could muster the courage to lie in front of her, because she did not just scare people by showing anger, but she gave such a punishment to those who made mistakes that others would also think ten times before getting entangled with her.
For this reason, people called her the Devil Queen.
Her beauty was as famous as her anger was far more dangerous. Black clothes, the seriousness that always remained on her face, and the coldness hidden in her eyes were her identity. She did not reveal her weakness in front of anyone. Big businessmen would think carefully before speaking when sitting in front of her, because they knew that trying to deceive Avni Rajvansh was like hitting an axe on one's own feet.
On the fiftieth floor of one of Mumbai's tallest commercial buildings was the main office of the Rajvansh Group. In the large room of that office, Avni Rajvansh was sitting behind a black table. She was wearing an expensive black suit. Her long hair was loose and there was such coldness in her eyes that the person sitting in front of her could not even make eye contact with her even if he wanted to.
In front of her was sitting a foreign businessman, whose name was William. He was considered a big industrialist in his country and had worked with many famous companies. He was very proud of his wealth and identity. He thought that he could make anyone dance to his tunes with his sweet talks. But today, sitting in front of Avni, all his pride had vanished.
William had made a big business deal with Avni. A good amount of money agreement had been made between the two companies. Avni had trusted him and given him a chance to work, but William tried to take advantage of that trust. He tried to take money from other places as well by using Avni's company name and hid some important things from her. He thought that Avni would not come to know about this, but he forgot that it was not easy to hide anything from Avni's eyes.
Avni slowly closes the file kept on her table and looks towards William sitting in front and says - "Mr. William, what do you think that I will just sit with you and keep listening to your talks and you will not even know what you are doing with me?"
William, adjusting his tie nervously, says - "Miss Rajvansh, you are perhaps misunderstanding me. I had some problems, because of which I had to take some decisions. My intention was not at all to deceive you."
Avni listens to him, gets up from her chair and slowly walks to the window. She keeps looking at Mumbai's tall buildings and the cars running below for a few moments. Then she turns and looks towards William and says - "Tell your story of trouble to someone else. You had come to work with me, so you should have known about me beforehand. I find out everything about someone before trusting them. Still, I gave you a chance, because I thought you were serious about your work. But you took my trust as my weakness."
William immediately gets up from his chair. Sweat starts coming on his forehead. He makes a gesture as if joining both his hands and says - "Miss Rajvansh, I made a mistake. I agree that I should not have hidden anything from you, but believe me, I will return your money. Just give me some time. I will never do this to you again."
Avni keeps looking at him for a few moments after listening to him. Then she returns to her table and sitting on her chair says - "Do you think that after harming me, using my name and trying to cheat me, you will just apologize and I will leave you?"
William quickly says - "No, Miss Rajvansh! That was not what I meant. I respect you. I don't want to spoil my relationship with you. We can both fix this matter together. I will return you all the money you want. Just listen to me once."
Avni picks up the file kept on her table and opens it in front of him. Pointing her finger at what is written in it, she says - "Are you seeing this? This contains all the information about the entire deal between you and my company. You did not complete the work for which you took money. On top of that, you also tried to take advantage elsewhere by using my company's name. You thought I would not know anything and you would continue your work peacefully."
William says nervously - "I will fix everything. I am ready to do whatever you say. Just give me one more chance."
Avni closes the file and keeps it on the table. Then she gets up from her chair and comes and stands in front of William. Now anger was clearly visible in her eyes.
Avni says in a stern voice - "Now you will be punished for what you have done, Mr. William. Now I will not make any agreement with you. I am also canceling the deal that happened between us. After today, our company will not make any deal with your company. And not only that, since you have tried to cheat me, now I will show you by ruining your company too. You have messed with the wrong person."
William gets badly scared after hearing this. He immediately comes in front of Avni and says - "No, Miss Rajvansh! Please, don't do this. Thousands of people work in my company. If you stop working with us, I will suffer a huge loss. I accept my mistake. I apologize to you. Give me one last chance. I will return all your money. I promise you in front of you that this will never happen again."
Avni keeps looking at him without any emotion after listening to him. Then she says with a slight smile - "When you were planning to cheat me, you didn't remember the people working in my company? Then you didn't think how many people could suffer because of you? Now when trouble has come upon you, you remember everything."
William repeatedly apologizing says - "I accept my mistake, Miss Rajvansh. Forgive me. I am even ready to hold your feet. Just don't ruin my company. I will never do this to you again in my whole life."
Avni listens to him and presses a button kept on her table. The next moment the door of the room opens and her four bodyguards dressed in black come inside. They come directly and stand in front of Avni.
Avni looking towards William says - "Now you can leave from here. And yes, don't think that I will change my decision because of your apology. What I have said will happen."
William says nervously - "Miss Rajvansh, please! You cannot do this. I can cause you a huge loss. I mean, if our deal gets canceled, you will also suffer a loss. Think once again."
Avni's eyes shrink with anger. She takes a step towards him and says - "Are you threatening to cause me loss? Talk within your limits, William. Many people like you have come in front of me and left showing their arrogance. But don't try to find out what happened to them after that. You are lucky that till now only your company is being talked about. My limit of tolerance is over. Now get out of my sight, before I think of something else for you instead of changing my decision."
William's face loses color. He immediately bows his head and says - "Forgive me, Miss Rajvansh. I will never come in front of you again. I accept my mistake."
Avni without looking at him says to her bodyguards - "Take him out. And take care, after today he should not be seen even around this office without my permission."
As soon as Avni says, all four bodyguards reach near William. Two of them stand on both sides of him and gesture him to walk with them. William once again turns towards Avni and says - "Miss Rajvansh, listen to me for the last time. I am really apologizing. I should not have done this. Please, give me a chance."
Avni sitting on her chair opens the file and without looking at him says - "I don't have any chance for you now. Take him away."
The bodyguards take William out of the room with them. He keeps apologizing all the way, but no one listens to him. He had understood well that the woman whom he had tried to deceive thinking she was an ordinary businesswoman was not an ordinary woman. She was Avni Rajvansh, whom the world knew as the Devil Queen.
As soon as William goes out, Avni sits comfortably on her chair. She calls her personal manager and says - "I need all the information about all the deals with William's company today itself. Prepare to cancel all the agreements that are going on with us. I don't want our company's name to be associated with his company in the future. And if any other company tries to stand against me together with him, then I want its information first."
The manager immediately says - "Yes, ma'am. I will get all the information out right now."
Avni while hanging up the phone says - "And listen, if any man from our company has helped William, then he should also be brought in front of me. I don't spare my own people either when they make a mistake."
The manager says - "Yes, ma'am. As you say, it will be done."
Avni hangs up the phone and again gets into her files, as if nothing had just happened in front of her. For her, it was just a decision, but the life of the man on whom her decision was going to fall heavily was about to change completely.
All the people working in the Rajvansh Group office knew that one should think carefully before making any mistake in front of Avni. She did not fall for anyone's sweet talks nor did she change her decision after seeing someone's tears. In her world, trust was very valuable, but she did not easily forgive the person who broke that trust.
For this reason, big businessmen bowed their heads in front of her. They wanted to connect with her, work with her, but no one dared to go against her. Avni had wealth, power, and such an empire in front of which even big people lowered their voices.
But despite having so much power and wealth, there was no one in her life in front of whom she could speak her heart. Most of the people living around her were either afraid of her or wanted to take advantage of her name and power. No one had tried to understand her with a true heart. Perhaps for this reason, she had closed the doors of her heart. Now for her, her empire was more important than relationships and staying firm on her decisions was more important than trust.
That same night, on the other end of Mumbai, in an old locality, a completely different life was going on. There was neither the glitter of tall buildings, nor the noise of expensive cars, nor the dominance of any big empire. There were small houses, narrow lanes, and people who returned to their homes in the evening after working hard all day. In a simple house built near those lanes lived twenty-year-old Pari.
Pari was extremely beautiful like her name. Her face was innocent, there was a strange softness in her big eyes and her long hair was often tied in a loose braid. Her face still showed the innocence of young age, but the light dark circles under her eyes and the fatigue on her face told that she had not been able to sleep peacefully for a long time.
Since morning she had been working in a house built in a large colony nearby. There were many rooms in that house, expensive furniture, and everything was decorated in its place. Pari went there to sweep, mop, clean utensils and do other household chores. Despite working all day, she often had to listen to scolding.
That day also the lady of the house was standing at the kitchen door and staring at her. Pari was cleaning utensils and fixing the kitchen cupboard, when the landlady's voice was heard.
The landlady says angrily - "Pari, can't you do one work properly? I told you in the morning that all the utensils have to be cleaned and kept. You are still stuck here. When will you learn to work?"
Pari immediately wipes her hands and looks at her and says slowly - "Landlady, all the utensils are clean. I am just fixing this last cupboard. After that I will also clean the floor."
The landlady cutting her talk says - "No need to give me clarifications. Do whatever work is given to you on time. You get paid for work here, no favor is being done to you. If you don't want to work, then tell me clearly. There are many people outside who need work."
Pari lowers her eyes. She knew that if she argued, she might be thrown out of work. This job was very important for her, because every rupee coming into her hands was linked to her needs. She silently starts cleaning the cupboard and after some time completes the rest of the work as well.
By afternoon her hands were tired. She had not even got time to eat properly since morning, but she said nothing to the landlady. In the evening after completing the work she gets her wages. She carefully counts the notes, keeps them in her small purse and leaves to return home.
All the way she keeps thinking that this time she will save some money. She didn't want to buy anything for herself. She just wanted that whenever needed, she should have enough money that she doesn't have to spread her hands in front of anyone. But in a corner of her mind there was also this fear that after reaching home perhaps nothing would be left in her hands.
She slowly reaches her lane. The door of the house was half open. The loud sound of TV was coming from inside and the smell of alcohol was spread in the room. Her husband was sitting on the sofa. A bottle of alcohol was kept on the table in front and he had a mobile in his hand. As soon as he sees Pari, he keeps the mobile aside and starts looking at her.
Pari silently takes off her shoes and holding her purse tries to go inside, then her husband calls out.
Her husband says - "Stop! How much money did you get today?"
Pari stops. She slowly turns towards him and says - "I got today's wages. I have to buy ration for the house and also pay the electricity bill. If some money is left, I will keep it."
Her husband immediately gets up from the sofa, comes to her and extending his hand says - "First give me the money. I have some important work. See other things later."
Pari holds her purse with both hands. She knew that once the money went into his hands, it would not come back. This had been happening for many months. Whatever she earned, her husband snatched from her. Sometimes for alcohol, sometimes for friends and sometimes to pay the amount lost in gambling.
Pari says in a low voice - "Don't take all the money this time. I really need it. The ration in the house is also running out. I will go to work again tomorrow, but let some money stay with me for now."
Her husband laughs after listening to her. Trying to snatch the purse from her hand he says - "Will you teach me to give money? So what if it's your earning? You live in this house, eat food, so the money will also be mine. Don't try to be too smart."
Pari tries to save her purse and for the first time musters some courage and says - "I give you money to run the house. But you take all the money every time. Then when I need it, I have nothing left. I will not give all the money now."
As soon as he hears her, her husband's face turns red with anger. He snatches the purse from her hand and pushes her hard. Pari loses her balance and collides with the nearby wall. Before she can compose herself, her husband starts shouting at her.
Her husband says angrily - "How dare you talk back in front of me? What are you so proud of? You started earning two pennies and you think you are very big? Remember, whatever you have in your life is because of me."
Tears fill Pari's eyes. She tries to stand straight taking support of the wall. Her hands were trembling, but she still says - "I never asked you for anything for myself. I just want you not to snatch all the money of my hard work. I am also a human. I also have needs."
As soon as he hears her, her husband loses his temper. He slaps Pari and completely snatches the purse from her hand. Pari staggers and sits down. Pain emerges on her cheek and tears start flowing from her eyes.
Her husband takes out the money and counts it. Then he keeps some notes in his pocket and picks up the rest of the money as well and starts going towards his room. Reaching the door he turns back and says threateningly - "Next time if you refuse to give money, it will be even worse. Now silently do the rest of the housework and don't open your mouth in front of me again."
Saying this he goes into the room and closes the door.
Pari remains sitting there for some time. She was feeling the pain of her cheek, but she was much more hurt by the fact that even the earning of her hard work did not remain her own. She slowly gets up, wipes her tears and goes towards the kitchen. There were still utensils lying in the house and dinner was yet to be cooked.
While working, suddenly her eyes fall on an old picture hanging on the wall. In that picture Pari was standing with her husband. Both had smiles on their faces and in her eyes there were countless dreams for the future at that time. Seeing the picture her hands stop and she gets lost in those memories of the past, which she could not erase from her mind even if she wanted to.
Two years ago Pari's life was completely different.
She used to study in college. At that time there was laughter in her life, moments spent with friends, and many dreams about the future. There she met a boy, whose name was Aarav. Aarav claimed to love her. He would wait for her outside college, take care of her small needs and make her believe that he was not like other boys.
When Pari told him that her family members were against love marriage, Aarav would hold her hand and assure her that everything would be fine after marriage.
Aarav used to tell her - "Pari, I will never let you lack anything. You just keep trust in me. After marriage I will give you so much happiness that you will never regret your decision. Before tears come in your eyes, I will remove your trouble."
At that time Pari used to believe his words. She thought that if someone loves her so much, then she can spend her whole life with him. Every moment spent with Aarav seemed to her a beautiful dream of her future.
But Pari's family did not approve of this relationship. Her parents had tried to make her understand that she should not take any decision in a hurry. They had told her to first complete her studies, think about her future and then take a big decision like marriage. But at that time Pari was so lost in her love that she did not understand her family's words.
One day she decided to leave home. She left with some money and married Aarav. She thought that with time family would forgive her and when they would understand the truth of her love, they would accept her back.
But it did not happen.
After she left home, the family broke all relations with her. Gradually they also stopped picking up her phone. In the beginning Pari had tried to call home many times, but every time she only got disappointment. Finally she reduced calling. She started getting scared that somewhere her mother might again tell her such things which she did not have the courage to listen to.
In the initial days of marriage, Aarav had not shown his true face. He used to talk to Pari lovingly and assure her that both would build their life together. But slowly his habits started changing. First he started drinking alcohol with friends, then started returning home late at night and after that fell into the habit of gambling. When Pari stopped him, he started getting angry at her. After some time his abusive language and beating became a daily thing.
Pari thought many times that perhaps Aarav would become like before again. She reminded him of old promises, explained to him and tried every possible thing for him. But Aarav did not care about her feelings, nor her hard work, nor that trust, on the basis of which Pari had left her house.
Today two years have passed since their marriage. The girl who once left her whole family for her love, today the same girl was struggling to save some rupees of her hard work in front of her husband.
Tears fall from Pari's eyes onto her hands. Looking at the picture she says slowly - "Aarav, you said that you would never let me lack anything. You said that before tears come in my eyes you will remove my trouble. Then why are there so many tears in my eyes today? I only loved you. I left my whole family for you. Was my mistake so big that you changed my whole life?"
Her voice gets choked. She takes down the picture from the wall and keeps looking at it for some time. In her mind, the memories of college days and today's reality were colliding with each other. She was not able to understand that the person who once promised to make her the happiest girl in the world, today has become her biggest trouble.
After some time she puts the picture back and wiping her tears starts cooking dinner. She knew that she would have to go to work again in the morning. Perhaps she would get some money from next day's wages, but what would happen to that money, she already knew.
At night when she lay on the bed, her eyes got fixed on the ceiling. The sound of her husband's snoring was coming from the next room. Pari changed sides and closed her eyes. In her mind the same question was arising again and again that when will her life change.
She did not know that in the coming days a turn was coming in front of her life, where she would have to take a decision for herself. Till now she had been waiting for her husband to change, but perhaps one day she will have to understand that not every relationship can be saved only with the help of love.
On the other hand, on the same night in Mumbai, Avni Rajvansh was taking the next decisions of her empire. For her, money, power and staying firm on her decisions were most important. She had everything, but around her there was no one whom she could trust without thinking.
On the other side, Pari had neither wealth, nor power, nor the support of family. She had only her hard work, but even on that her own right did not remain.
The name of one made big businessmen afraid, while the other was living in fear in her own house. One had the power to punish others, while the other was trying to muster the courage to raise her voice against the wrong happening to her.
Both their worlds were different. Both their lives were different. And till now both did not know anything about each other.
But the storm coming in Pari's life had not ended yet. Her husband's habit of alcohol and gambling was now going to reach a place where Pari would have no other way left except to take a big decision regarding her future.
Will Pari finally muster the courage to choose a new life for herself? And will there ever come someone in Avni Rajvansh's world who will reach close to her not out of fear of her, but by understanding her real heart?
