The room where the council met was really cold. It was located within the Frostfang main hall. The heavy oak tables were arranged in a circle under lights. There were banners hanging from the ceiling with the Draven pack crest on them. Lyra stood beside Kael. Her shoulders were. Her chin was lifted. There was a bite mark on her shoulder. It was throbbing with every heartbeat. This was a mark of their bond that nobody could ignore. Kaels father, the alpha sat at the head of the table. His face looked like it was carved from stone. His eyes were burning with fury that he could barely control. Selene stood to his right. She was smirking like she had already won.
The emergency pack council had begun. The alpha said to Kael "You have disobeyed orders. You have bonded with this latent without permission. Without approval. Explain yourself before I make an example of you both."
Lyra felt the weight of every stare. Some people were curious. Others were openly hostile. Rylan stood behind them offering support. Coach Harlan watched from the side. His eyes were calculating. Lyra reached through the bond sending Kael a pulse of strength and love. He squeezed her hand once hidden from view then stepped
"Father Lyra is my mate " he declared. His voice was steady and commanding. "The bond snapped into place the moment we met. It is not something I chose. It is fate. She awakened her alpha blood during the Riverrun game. She proved her strength night when their scouts attacked. She fought beside me. Held her own. She belongs here. With me."
There were gasps from the elders. Selene laughed sharply. "A stray fights off scouts. Suddenly she is alpha material? Please. This girl is a threat to our bloodlines. She will weaken the pack."
Lyra stepped forward refusing to stay silent. "I am not a stray. My bloodline carries power. Latent, yes. Awakening fast. I earned my place on the team. I earned my place with Kael. If the pack cannot accept a mate bond then maybe the problem is not me."
The alpha slammed his fist on the table. "Enough. You speak boldly for someone who nearly got my son killed night. Riverrun has already sent demands. They want you handed over for testing. They claim any latent alpha female belongs to the pack. Not some blooded romance."
Kaels face flashed with anger. He moved protectively in front of Lyra. "No one is handing her over. She is mine. The bond is sealed. If Riverrun wants war they will get it."
The air was thick with tension. One elder leaned forward. "The championship tournament begins soon. Internal division now could cost us everything. Perhaps a trial period. Test the girls loyalty and strength on the ice."
Selene seized the opening. ". Better yet a formal challenge. Let me face her in a controlled fight. If she survives then maybe the bond has merit."
Lyra smiled coldly. "I accept. Name the time."
Kael growled low. "No. She is still healing from night."
"I am fine " Lyra cut in meeting his eyes with determination. "I will not hide behind you, Kael. Not anymore."
The alpha watched them both closely noting the way they moved in sync the way their scents had merged into one. His expression darkened further. "Very well. A challenge bout tomorrow night after practice. No weapons.. Strength only. If Lyra Vale survives and proves worthy the bond stands. For now.. If she fails she leaves Frostfang.. Kael you will mate with Selene Blackthorn as originally arranged."
Kael stepped forward fists clenched. "Father you cannot."
"I can and I will " the alpha snapped. "Power rolled off him, heavy and commanding. This is not a discussion. This is law."
The council dismissed after. Lyra and Kael walked out together shoulders brushing. The moment they reached a corridor he pulled her into an empty side room pressing her against the wall. His mouth claimed hers in a heated kiss. Hands roamed urgently as if reassuring himself she was still there.
The next day was practice. The team split into factions. Some supported the bond while others sided with tradition and Selene. Coach Harlan ran them through combat drills disguised as hockey exercises. Lyra moved with power. Her awakened blood made her faster and stronger. She checked opponents with authority. Scored twice.
Selene targeted her relentlessly. During one drill she slammed Lyra hard whispering threats. "Tomorrow I will make you bleed stray. Then Kael will be mine."
Lyra shoved her back eyes flashing gold. "Try it. I have already taken what is mine."
Kael watched with tension jaw tight and fists clenched. Rylan skated close during a break. "The council is divided. Some elders like the idea of blood. Others fear it. Your uncle Elias arrived an hour ago. He is meeting with the alpha now."
Hope flickered in Lyras chest. "Good. We need every ally."
That evening Elias found her in the dorm lounge. He hugged her tightly then examined the claiming bite with a nod. "The bond looks strong. Your mother would be proud.. Child the challenge tomorrow is dangerous. Selene has trained in wolf form since she was twelve."
"I can handle it " Lyra said, her voice firm. "The power inside me it grows every time Kael. I are close."
Elias sighed. "There is more to your bloodline than even I told you. An ancient line, rare, capable of uniting packs or tearing them apart. Be careful. Win tomorrow. Do not reveal everything. Not yet."
Night. Kael snuck into her dorm room despite the risks. They did not speak much. He simply undressed her slowly worshipping every bruise and mark with his mouth and hands. He brought her to climax with his tongue and fingers slow and teasing until she begged. Then he took her gently from behind careful of her injuries yet deep enough to make her moan his name. No knot this time just connection and quiet reassurance. They fell asleep tangled together the bond humming peacefully between them.
The morning brought storm clouds and heavier tension. The entire academy buzzed with news of the challenge. By evening the challenge ring behind the arena was packed with students and pack members.
Lyra stepped into the circle wearing light gear her heart pounding, but her resolve steel hard. Kael stood at the edge eyes locked on hers of love and barely leashed fury. Selene entered opposite her half shifted, claws extended and eyes glowing.
The alpha commanded, "Begin."
Selene attacked first, fast and vicious. Lyra. Countered with a powerful strike that drew first blood. The fight turned savage, claws slashing growls filling the air. Pain flared as Selene landed a gash across Lyras arm but the bond fed her strength. She felt Kael with her every second.
With a roar Lyra unleashed her power tackling Selene and pinning her. Claws, at the rivals throat she snarled, "Yield."
Selene struggled, hate burning in her eyes but finally tapped out.
The crowd erupted. Kael rushed forward pulling Lyra into his arms kissing her fiercely in front of every one. Visible pride and relief shone on his face.
