Find out as you read. 💀 ★ ★ ★ CHAPTER 1&2 [FRANCE, 9PM BLACKTHORN SYNDICATE HEADQUARTERS] The rain had stopped hours ago, but the sky still looked bruised, deep purple, hanging heavy over Paris. Inside the Blackthorn Syndicate, the silence was thick as f**k. And well, that's how Serena likes it. Her room was quiet, cold, and spotless. Not much in it, except for the basics and two large suitcases sitting open on the bed. She folded her clothes with sharp movement. A black pistol was already tucked between her shirts. A blade wrapped in silk sat to the side, waiting for its place. This mission wasn’t new to her. She’d done worse for less. But the name attached to this one carried weight. Wolfe Hayes, although she doesn't know how he looks like, but obviously a billionaire. Untouchable, and marked for death. Shortly after, the door creaked open. Serena didn’t look up. The smell hit first, cigarette smoke and cheap perfume. Then the click of heels on tile. She knew that sound well. Nina Raye. Leaning against the doorway, arms crossed, a cigarette burning between her fingers. Same smug smile and dead eyes. "Well, well," Nina said, exhaling slowly. "Look who’s packing for paradise." Serena zipped one side of her luggage, still not looking at her. "Don’t you have a mirror to talk to?" Nina smirked. "I just came to see what the Syndicate’s little favorite was up to. Taking out a multi billionaire? That’s a hell of a promotion." Serena paused, then finally turned around. Her face was calm, but her eyes were sharp. "Jealousy makes your voice ugly," she said flatly Nina took a slow drag from her cigarette. "You think you’re the best. Just because they handed you this mission?" She smiled, a fake one. "I think I’m capable. That’s the difference." Nina stepped forward, just a little. "Don’t get too comfortable. One mistake, and I’ll be the one they send to clean up your mess. Or your body." Serena smiled. "Let’s hope you’re better at cleaning than you are at killing." For a second, the room was still. Then Nina let out a dry laugh and flicked her cigarette ash onto the floor. "Bon voyage, princess," she said, before turning and walking out without another word. Serena watched the door close behind her, then looked back at the blade on the bed. This wasn’t just another mission, she knows what would come along if she succeed. So, she's going to make sure it Doesn't become Nina’s. -- [DIRECTOR'S SUITE] The room was quiet, except for the soft click of a lighter. Lucien Voss stood near the window, a cigarette burning between his fingers. Smoke curled in the air as he stared out. He's the leader of the Blackthorn Syndicate. The one who gave orders, made people disappear, and never repeated himself. Everyone feared him, dangerous, brutal and heartless. The door opened and Serena entered gently, She closed the door behind her and walked in with calm steps. "I’ve finished packing, boss," she said. Lucien took a drag from the cigarette, then spoke without looking at her. "A car will take you to the airport soon. You’ll be landing in Chicago. There’s an apartment waiting. Quiet place, well-covered." Serena nodded once. Lucien finally turned to face her. His suit was dark. His eyes, darker. There was no emotion in them. "Half your payment has already been sent. The rest will come after the job is done." He paused. "Do not mess this up, Serena. Hayes is not just anyone." "I understand," she said. "I’m serious," he added. "If this goes wrong, you know the consequences." "It won’t." Lucien picked up a small black phone from the desk and held it out. "This connects to me only. No contacts. No signal trail. Use it if anything changes, emergency only." Serena stepped forward and took it. "You have everything?" "Yes." He turned back to the window, as if the conversation was over. Serena gave a short bow and walked out. The hallway outside was empty. Cold white lights buzzed overhead as she moved toward the exit. In the parking area, two guys were waiting beside a black benz. Malik leaned against the passenger door, with folded arms. He looked tall, clean, and always had a calm look on his face. He and Serena had worked together more times than she could count. If she had anyone close in the Syndicate, it was him. "Everything ready?" he asked, standing straight as she approached. "Yeah," she said. Rian was by the trunk, lifting her suitcases into the back. He was a little quieter than Malik, but not in a cold way. Just observant. "You sure about this one?" he asked, glancing over his shoulder. Serena looked at him. "I don’t miss, don't worry about me" Rian gave her a small nod. Malik opened the back door for her. "Come on. Let’s get you on that plane." Serena climbed into the car without a word. The two men got in, and the car pulled out into the night. The ride to the airport was smooth. No one talked much. Malik checked his watch now and then. Rian drove like he’d done this a hundred times and obviously yes, He's the best driver in the mob. At the private terminal, everything went fast. Her documents were cleared, the fake identity approved. One of Lucien’s people handed her the last travel bag..inside was cash, new cards, and the resume she’d use to walk into Wolfe Hayes’s life. Malik handed it over without a word at first, then looked at her. "You know the job," he said. "Just don’t let him get under your skin." Serena raised an eyebrow. "I’ve handled worse." "Yeah," Malik said, a small smile tugging at his mouth. "But this one’s pretty. And rich. Dangerous combo." Rian chuckled softly behind him. "You’ll be back in no time," he said. "We believe in you." Serena didn’t say anything. She just looked at them one last time, then turned and walked toward the gate. The plane was waiting. Her seat was ready. She didn’t look back. Back in the car, as they drove off, Rian leaned against the window. "You think she’s got this?" Malik’s eyes stayed on the road, He's driving this time around. "She’s Serena Vale," he said. "She always gets it done." "I hope so, I will kind of miss her" Rian mutterred before using his airpods. -- [MORNING, CHICAGO, 8:00 AM HAYES GLOBAL] The top floor of the company was quiet, cold, and way too bright, it's the headquarter which combines every businesses under Hayes name, so this is where Wolfe's office is. The interview was set to start in one hour. All ten applicants had been told to show up early. Nine had, just one left. "Where’s the last person?" asked Sasha Bloom, Wolfe's personal assistant. Her voice was calm, but her tone carried weight. Sasha's in her mid-thirties, sharp eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses, her black hair tied into a tight bun. She wore a pale beige suit and nude heels, classy but strict. She’d been Wolfe’s PA for nearly five years. Next week, she would be getting married and leaving the country with her fiancé. That’s why this whole process was happening in the first place. Beside her stood Zayne,Wolfe's right hand and personal bodyguard. He was younger, mid-twenties, but no one would dare mess with him. Tall, attractive, quiet, and always watching. He doesn't speak unless it matters. He glanced at the clipboard in his hand. "We selected ten from the online screening," he said. "Only nine are here." Sasha looked over the seated applicants, everyone looking sharp. "One hour left," she said. "If she doesn't show by then, she's out." "Cool" Zayne nodded. -- Outside, a black car pulled up near the side entrance. The door opened fast. Serena stepped out. She didn’t walk, she moved like time was running out. Her coat flared slightly as she shut the door behind her. Her flight had landed just an hour ago. Eight-hour trip from Paris, plus customs. She had barely found her apartment, changed, and made it here. She wore a black silk blouse tucked into slim charcoal pants. No jewelry. Just clean lines and sharp heels. Her hair was tied into a low, tight ponytail. She had on barely any makeup, but she didn’t need it. Her face was cool, serious, okay, All business. She walked through the front doors. Upstairs, the receptionist blinked as she stepped out of the elevator. "Name?" the woman asked. "Serena Vale," she said. The woman nodded and pointed to the last empty seat. Serena walked past the other nine applicants, her heels clicking softly and against the floor, her eyes on the far wall. She didn’t glance at anyone. But everyone stared at her. Her walk. Her face. The way she didn’t look nervous like the rest of them. She sat down without a word. From across the room, Zayne looked over. "There’s our tenth," he said quietly. Sasha gave Serena one quick look. "Barely on time. But she’s here." Zayne nodded, then stepped forward. "We’ll begin shortly. You’ll be called in one by one." He looked down at the list and started calling names. The first applicant stood and walked in through the side door, where a quiet office waited. Serena stared, Wolfe wasn’t doing the interviews himself. He doesn't believe in small talk, and most importantly,he doesn't have time, so Sasha would make the pick. He trusted her judgment. Always had. One by one, the applicants were called in. Serena just sat there looking as calm as ever, she chose to believe she would get picked anyway, why? She's just too brilliant and confident for anyone not to think twice before skipping her name. Yeah...she's like that. She watched the interview went on and on, applicants going in and coming out one after the other, until it was her turn to go inside. She stood up and went in. -- [SERENA'S PLACE, 9:00 P.M.] The knock on the door came the second time as Serena approached. She opened it, took the brown paper bag from the delivery guy, and closed the door without a word. She dropped the food on the coffee table and sank into the couch. The apartment was simple. Neutral walls, clean furniture, not a single thing that belonged to her. It was temporary anyway, like everything else in her life. She opened the food, grabbed a fork, and started eating. Her phone sat next to her, the screen lighting up every few minutes. Still nothing. During the interview, they said the selected applicant would be contacted around this time. She hadn’t heard anything yet. While she ate, she picked up the phone and opened it she searched about
