Chapter 1_The Fireborn
The gates of Ashthorne Academy loomed before her, wrought from black iron and bound in runes that shimmered like coals beneath the surface. Rose Evernight stood alone, suitcase in hand, heart pounding like a war drum inside her chest. She wasn’t supposed to be here. No one without magic ever got invited to Ashthorne. The school only accepted the elite — those born into powerful elemental bloodlines, descendants of gods, or monsters pretending to be human. And Rose? She was just… ordinary. At least, that’s what she thought. Then the invitation came — delivered by a black-winged raven that spoke her name in a voice made of smoke. > “The fire has chosen you.” She’d barely slept since. The air inside the academy grounds was charged, thick with power. Trees whispered secrets, and the cobblestone path beneath her boots pulsed like it had a heartbeat. A girl with silver hair and blue eyes didn't belong here. But the school had summoned her. And something inside her burned to know why. --- The moment she entered the courtyard, the world shifted. Magic rippled across her skin — hot and wild — and the students around her turned to stare. Some with curiosity. Some with hunger. And then… he appeared. Leaning against a stone pillar wrapped in fire vines, a shirtless boy stood like a god of trouble. His skin was bronze and smooth, coiled with black dragon tattoos that moved as he breathed. A glowing dragon pendant hung against his bare chest. His hair was pitch black, unruly like smoke, and his golden eyes burned straight through her. Their eyes met. And for a second, Rose forgot how to breathe. He pushed off the wall with a lazy grace, walking toward her like the flames made space for him. “You’re the girl the flames keep whispering about,” he said, voice dark and smooth like melting honey. Rose narrowed her eyes. “Do you always greet strangers with cryptic fire talk?” He smirked, slow and dangerous. “Only the ones I want to taste.” Her heart skipped. She hated that it did. “Back off,” she said, but her voice betrayed her — soft, breathless, curious. He stepped closer anyway. The fire on the nearby torches flared, reacting to his mood. Or hers. She couldn’t tell. “I’m Kael Draven,” he said. “Top of the class. Bottom of the rules. Marked by dragons. And you... smell like prophecy.” “I smell like what?” “You’ll understand soon enough.” With a flash of heat, his dragon tattoo shimmered — and flames danced across his chest without burning him. Rose flinched, but Kael only laughed and turned away, walking into the shadows. But before he disappeared, he called back to her: > “Welcome to Ashthorne, little spark. Try not to burn too fast.” ---
