Healed By Love
My name is Abigail Fonsly and I am 16 years old. I have natural blonde hair that I tend to dye a lot since I hate the blonde. I am not exactly skinny but I would t say I am fat either. I love the color of my eyes. They are green, except for when I am extremely pissed then they go blue. That’s how my parents know when to let me just cool off some. I guess you could same I am like most teenagers and just want to leave home and explore the world on my own. I do want to leave home but not for the same reasons most kids want to.
We live in a small town about an hour away from the city. I live with my parents Rose and Tommy and my 2 brothers Jake and Bradly. I love the cozy feeling you get from the small town vibe, but I have always dreamed of more. I have always loved the mountains, wanted to move there and just be away from the city and lights that came with it. Loved the feeling nature gave when the moon was high up in the night sky. My family always said one day we would move there and make a new home.
I grew up believing that family was everything and nothing came in between us. That is until last year when I discovered an unbelievable secret that my so called parents were hiding from me.
I wasn’t supposed to be in my dads office. He never allowed us kids in there. Said work was his escape from reality. He loved his job, sometimes it seemed like he loved it more than his kids. My father is a well known architect for the big city of Indianapolis. He took pride in his work and always loved to lock himself in there for hours at a time.
I was walking by the door and noticed it was cracked open just a bit. I thought he might be in there so I knocked and walked in to talk to him. Instead of finding my father, I seen his office was a bit of a mess with papers all over the floor. I thought I was being helpful by picking them up and stacking them on his desk for him.
As I was gathering the last few pieces of paper I notice one with my name written on it. When I picked it up I seen the page underneath it was an adoption agreement. Now I knew I wasn’t the spitting image of my parents like my brothers but we had similar looks. So why didn’t my parents tell me that I was adopted?
As I am sitting there just staring at the papers in my hands trying to understand what I was reading I heard the door close behind me. My father stood looking a bit angry until he noticed what was in my hands. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought I saw a bit of remorse in his eyes before he blinked it away. He took a deep breath in and let it out slowly.
“I guess you found our little secret after all huh” my father said looking down at his feet.
“Was you and mom ever going to tell me that I was adopted or just wait to put it in a letter I got after your funeral?” I shot back angrily.
I shouldn’t have been so mad at him. I didn’t know why they didn’t tell me. All I could hope now was that there was a good enough reason for keeping it from me. The look on his face told me that I had hurt the man that raised me. According to the papers I was adopted just before I turned 3 years old.
“Your mother and I talked and was going to tell u after your 17th birthday.” He said calmly and relaxed.
I saw something that I never thought I would see from my father. I watched him as a single tear ran down my fathers cheek. Then I watched as his eyes appeared to look glazed over. I wasn’t sure what just happened. I just sat there watching and jumped when the office door slammed open and my mother came in looking angry at my father.
“You said you had the documents put in a safe place and that she wouldn’t find them until we agreed she was ready to know the truth.” My mother was screaming at my father with tears streaming down her face.
“So it’s true, I am adopted?” I said. I meant it as a statement but it came out a question. I was upset that my parents kept this from me but I was also upset that I thought I wasn’t wanted in the beginning by my real parents and that’s why they never told me.
“Yes, sweetie you are adopted. I wanted to tell you a few years ago but your mother convinced me to wait til just after your 17th birthday when it would make it just a bit easier to explain.” My father said as he gave a look to my mother that said it was all her.
“We didn’t really have a choice in the matter now did we, Tommy. Don’t make her think that this was just me that kept this from her.” My mother said rather nasty to my father. She gave me a bit of a warning glare before she continued.
“Don’t get us wrong, we love you just like you are our biological daughter.” My mother says with a long sigh. “After your brothers were born we tried for more, but due to medical issues I was unable to conceive again.”
“So u adopted me because u couldn’t have a girl, that’s really not a bad thing. I think I could have handled that part of you would have told me.” I said and got an eye roll from my father and a little chuckle out of my mother.
“Part of it has to do with that yes, but no in the beginning it was actually we were forced to adopt you and then go into hiding.” My father said with his head hung low. I watch as tears came from my mothers eyes. I definitely did not expect that answer.
“What do you mean you were forced to adopt me, that makes no sense.” I shouted at both of them. I am not sure when I got so angry. I was in shock just a few seconds ago and now I am so angry my fists are clenched and my knuckles are white. “Why would you say that you are in hiding, we live in the middle of a town and dad works in a big city. That makes no sense. Either be honest with me or don’t tell me. I don’t want it to be sugar coated anymore.”
I was so angry that I now had tears forming in my eyes. I blink them away. My father has told me on multiple occasions that they haven’t seen me cry ever. I would fall and get hurt but never cry. I would be sad about something for days but I would never cry. He would always joke and say I was made of steel and it blocked my tears.
“We are not originally from here, we have lived in Indiana for only the past 13 years.” My father stated and my mother just looked at him for him to continue. “We are from Tennessee, a place surrounded by mountains and rivers. We had no choice but to leave only 2 days after we adopted you.”
“Remember when I told you that I was an only child?” My father asks me and I give him a look that says more secrets I presume. “Well I am not, and neither is ur mother.”
“Then why haven’t you mentioned them before or even visited with them?” I ask and before I can get an answer I get another thought. “You said that you were in hiding, what are you hiding from?”
“It’s not a what, it’s a who that we are hiding from.” My brother Bradly says coldly and I let out a small shriek. I don’t know how long he was standing there before he spoke. “The Alpha sent us away to protect you, honestly I’m surprised you didn’t figure this out sooner.”
I gave my brother a weird look that told him I was utterly confused as to why he knew all this time and never said anything. Yes I was close to my brothers. Tommy always protected me from being bullied and he made sure I always had what I needed. But that was about it when it came to my oldest sibling. He is 7 years older than me so he kept his friends at a distance and wouldn’t let them near me.
Bradly on the other hand was only 3 years old than me. He liked to hang out and we had a lot of the same friends. When it came to boys he had put his foot down though. I didn’t entertain the idea of dating or even consider it anymore. I liked to be with friends or by myself most the time.
“Yes, I knew you were adopted. No, it doesn’t change anything. You always have been and always will be my sister.” He stated like there was no point in arguing. But it only raised concerns about my next thought.
“Who is this Alpha person and why did you have to go into hiding?” I asked. Part of me wasn’t sure I really wanted to know but now that I know I felt I needed to.
We sat there for about 3 minutes while I looked at my parents. They were looking at each other like they were having an inner conversation. They actually did that a lot. Right now it was starting to piss me off.
“Can someone please explain things a little bit more instead of keeping me out of it all?” I all but yelled towards my family.
Next thing I knew was the door was being thrown open and in run Tommy. “The Alpha and Beta just pulled up out front.” Yelled Tommy. He was out of breath from running.
“What.” Yelled my brother and parents. “I wasn’t informed they were coming, something is wrong.” Said my father.
My parents and Tommy went running to the front door and Bradly dragged me along with him. I was so confused as to what was goin on. Why were they so worried and why do they keep saying Alpha. When we got to the front door my parents were speaking to 2 men in the driveway. My mother looked very worried and my father was looking pissed off.
I was about the ask what the hell was goin on when one of the men turned to me. He had only one emotion on his face and it was concern. “Abigail, you don’t know me but I really need you to pack your bags and come with me.” He said it with no emotion attached to it and the look my parents had showed I was to do as I was told.
I might have listened any other day but not today. I had just had a huge secret unlocked to me and now some strange man was here to take me from my family I don’t think so. I crossed my arms and gave him a glare of pure hatred. “Give me one good reason why I should listen to you. I don’t know you and I just found out that my family is but isn’t my family. NO. I am not going anywhere with you.” I was shouting by the time I was done.
He took a step back like I had just slapped him across the face. The other man walked up beside him and put his arm on his shoulder. The first man gave a nod and walked away. The second man took two steps forward and now we were face to face with each other. The next words out of his mouth gave me a shock of a lifetime. “Abigail, please, I know this is a lot to take in. Your father told me you just found out about your adoption this morning. I’m sorry to tell you but you are in danger once again so I need you to please pack your things and come with us. I will explain as much as I can on the way home but you need to come with us. NOW.”
“Danger? From what? I am not doing anything until someone starts explaining something. I am sick and tired of the lies. My entire life has been a lie it seems and it just keeps goin. How do I k ow your not just trying to take me from the only family I have ever known. Obviously I wasn’t wanted when I was born. So why now. Why should I listen to you.” I was yelling now. Probably a good thing we didn’t have close neighbors. I was probably looking a bit crazy.
The man in front of me had an expression of hurt and sadness wash over him. What he said next made me go speechless. “Why would I want to hurt my baby sister?”
The last thing I remember was someone yelling my name and everything went dark.
I woke up to a slight headache and feeling like I was goin to puke. I slightly open my eyes and noticed I was in a truck. When I sat up straight I felt a little dizzy and reached beside me to keep straight when I felt someone beside me. I looked over to see the man from my house sitting next to me.
“Glad to see you are finally awake lil sis.” He said as he passed me a bottle of water.
“Please don’t call me that, I don’t know who you are. I have two brothers that love and protect me.” I said with a raised eyebrow at him. I could tell my words hurt him pretty deep. I didn’t mind at the moment due to the slight ache in my head. “Where are we and where is my family? I asked him.
“Your family is in the truck behind us. We are almost home. I am sorry I should have introduced myself before anything else. My name is Alpha Adam Thorbin. I am your older brother by blood. I know you still have quite a few questions. I will try to answer them to the best of my abilities. Just know that I will not try to separate you from your adopted family. I just hope one day you will see myself and ur other blood relatives as family also someday.” He spoke with such sincerity that I wasn’t sure if it was real or not.
“If you are my family and there is others than why was I not with you? The records I found showed I was adopted at a very young age. Why was I given away?” I asked before I thought it through. I could have eased my way into that but I needed to know now.
“It wasn’t easy for our parents to let you go. When you were born our mother and father were so excited cuz they finally got the girl they dreamed about. After having 5 boys I guess it was time for a girl after all. It wasn’t until your second birthday that the plans for your adoption had to be made.” He was speaking to me with his head down now. I saw a single tear fall down his face before he could wipe it away.
“We were all outside the pack house celebrating your birthday when the wind blew and we smelled the scent of our father’s brother. He was a cold hearted man. Only cared about power. He knew of a prophecy that said a girl last born would reunite the species. The girl will be unlike anything else in her time. She will help form allies and calm the wars. Only with her power can the enemy be defeated, without her, evil shall prevail.”
I was definitely at a loss for words. I couldn’t understand what he was talking about. I didn’t have any powers. I was an ordinary girl. I didn’t have many friends and I liked to be alone. I was nothing special.
“I think you have the wrong girl, I am just some regular teenager that sticks to herself when her brothers are not around. I don’t have powers.” I said to him. He just smiled at me and I wanted to slap him. “If you keep grinning like that I will slap you.”
He slightly chuckled before he spoke, “You haven’t had your 17th birthday yet so you don’t really know how special you are. In just 3 weeks a lot will be easier to understand.” He spoke as if his cryptic words were supposed to make sense.
“What does my birthday have to do with anything?” I asked. Just then I felt the truck make a turn and seems to be on a gravel road. I look out the tinted windows and see mountains upon mountains. I have always loved the mountains. It was slightly covered in snow and the trees had a slight dusting on them. I noticed a building coming into view and I glanced at it and then noticed it looked familiar. I had seen this in a book of dad’s drawings. I thought it was a coincidence until I heard my so called brother speak.
“Your father designed this building from top to bottom just for our pack.”
“Why do you keep saying pack? Why do you keep referring to yourself as Alpha? Do you have a lot of pet dogs or something?”
I heard what sounded like a growl come from the front seat and I noticed the second man from my house in the passenger seat. “Please excuse my Beta, he is a bit sensitive to the word dog when it is used like that.” Adam spoke with a bit of humor in his tone.
“I am not sensitive to the word dog I just prefer being called a wolf. It’s not that hard just one more letter than the other. And I’m sorry I guess I should introduce myself as well. I am Beta Trevor. Second in command under your brother here. The man driving is the head warrior Joshua. It’s nice to meet u finally Abigail.” Spoke the man that was just growling at Adam. Yep I think I needed a drink. I thought I must be dreaming or something.
As we drive further down the gravel road I start to look out the window again and I see something out of the corner of my eye. It looks to be a small dog. It was chasing its tail when I happen to notice a large brown wolf come out of the bushes. It walks over to the pup and nudges him. I had never seen a wolf before. I was kinda in awe at first. I looked to the man beside me and he had a smile on his face. “What” I asked him.
He chuckled a little and said “You would think you never seen a wolf before.”
The smile on my face fell and was replaced by a glare. “I haven’t, not in person. They are not really out in the open where we lived.” I watched as the smile on his face fell and was utterly shocked to hear me say that.
“So you really don’t know do you?” He asked. I turned to look at him with a puzzled expression and asked “Know What.”
“Abigail we are part wolf. That is why we are called a pack. I am the Alpha of the pack now. Father retired a few years ago. Have you not met your wolf yet?”
I couldn’t respond to that without anything but a laugh. I started laughing so hard that my stomach hurt. I felt the truck come to a stop and I was still laughing when I got out the truck. I happened to come around the truck at the exact moment my new found brother was handing his jacket to his beta and turn towards me and then shift.
I stopped laughing immediately. I didn’t know what to say or what to do. I just watched a man literally turn into a very large dog.
“What the f**k” was the last thing I said before darkness took over.
I could hear voices around me. At least 5 different voices speaking. I started to open my eyes and I seen Adam staring at me with nothing but worry in his eyes. “Are you ok, I didn’t mean to scare you. I didn’t think you would believe me unless you seen it for yourself.” He said calmly.
“You could have gave a bit of a warning or something. I have never seen a dog” I heard a growl behind me and remembered the car ride here so I corrected myself. “I mean wolf, that big before.”
“Yeah I guess I could have said something like, here meet my big bad wolf.” We both started to laugh.
“So are you all part wolf then?” I asked looking at my family.
They all lowered their heads and nodded. “Does that mean I am part wolf as well?” I asked before anyone could say anything else.
My father came and sat down beside me and grabbed my hand as he spoke “Yes my dear, in 3 weeks when you turn 17 you will meet your wolf. Then on the following full moon you will have you first shift. It will not be easy and it will hurt like hell but we will all be with you when it happens.”
I was so stunned I couldn’t do anything but blink. How did I not know that my family had turned to wolves at some point. Why did they hide it from me all this time. All of a sudden something came to my mind. “Wait you said that there was danger, what kind of danger. What is so horrible that I was lied to all my life. And if you are my blood brother how come I am just now meeting you? Where were you all my life? Why didn’t you reach out to me?” I said the last part looking at the so called Alpha.
He looked a bit taken back at first and then quickly recovered. “Ok that is a lot to ask about so I will try to explain the best I can. First I wanted to reach out to you to make sure that you were safe. I was at school when you were sent away to live with your other family. I was furious when I got home and couldn’t find you. Your scent was so weak that I knew you wasn’t home.”
“Wait my scent, are you saying I stink because I took a shower the morning you came to our home?” I asked because I wasn’t going to be insulted.
He laughed but continued, “No you don’t stink, all of us wolves have a different scent that helps us to know who we are and where we are from. Mother saw me searching trying to track your scent and she informed me that you were gone. I was furious. She told me that you were sent to live with them due to the coming danger. I was so mad and angry at that point that I had my first shift right then and there.”
“Us wolves normally do not shift until the first full moon after our 17th birthday. I was only 8 years old.” As he spoke his fist were clenching so tight his knuckles were white.
“So why did you shift so early then” I asked before he could continue.
“It is very rare but it has happened before, a traumatic event can cause a wolf to shift early on if it is needed. My wolf sensed the urgency to find his little sister so he forced the shift. Mother then proceeded to tell me of the danger you where in after I shifted back.” He said after a few deep breaths.
I honestly wasn’t sure how to ask this or why I did but I needed to know. “Is your mother still alive?”
He looked at me with a questioning smirk before he replied, “Yes she is alive, father died about two years ago. She has been locked up in the south wing of the pack house for the last year and a half. Won’t leave her room for anything. We have the staff take her meals and the doctor checks on her every couple weeks but still no improvement.” His face showed he has been torn up about the emotional distress his mother seems to be in at the loss of his father.
“And what about this danger that I am in. What is it that had everyone so spooked that they sent me away like I was nothing?” I asked with a hint of anger in my tone. I couldn’t help it. If it was so easy to give me away then, then why come looking for me now?
“It isn’t a what, it is a who.” This time it was my adopted mother that spoke up. “Remember back in your fathers office. We were telling you about the prophecy. Well you are the girl in the prophecy. There is an evil man that has an army and will stop at nothing to use you to allow evil to prevail over the good. He seeks power and revenge.
“What are you talking about, I am nothing special. I can’t be part of some prophecy. I am a simple girl from a small town that dreamed to be in the mountains some day away from everyone and everything.” I heard a gasp come from behind me as I finished ranting about how I was nothing special. I turned to look and saw a woman in her early forties maybe with a few tears on her cheeks. She looked surprised and confused.
“Abigail, is that really you? Have you come home to us?” She spoke with a soft tone. More tears came to her eyes as she wiped away the few that had fallen.
I didn’t know what to say to her so I said the first thing that came to mind. “Who are you and why does everyone keep calling this place my home. It’s not my home.”
As soon as the words were out my mouth I took off running out the front door. I don’t know where I was going but I could stay in that room any longer. This was a lot to take in and it was all thrown at me all at once.
I ran into the woods and seen a fallen tree to the side and decided to sit on it to catch my breath. I felt like everything I knew was a lie. I felt like I didn’t really know anyone anymore. Next thing I knew I heard a twig snap as if someone or something stepped on it.
I turned around so fast that I slid off the tree and was headed for the ground. Before I could connect to the ground I felt a pair of arms around my waist. I turned my head slightly to see who was with me and I seen a pair of gorgeous hazel eyes staring back at me. I couldn’t stop looking at them until I heard him clear his throat.
I stiffen a bit and got back on my feet. That was when I noticed he was only in a pair of basketball shorts. I was looking at his face for a few seconds until my gaze started to lower. He was the sexiest man I had ever seen. His jaw line was sharp and he had a bit of a goatee type shave. His neck had beads of sweat running down it as if he had been running a lot.
He had broad shoulders that made him look even hotter. His pecks were toned and he had a tattoo on the left side, a wolf. I smirked a bit. He had defined abs that made me want to lick the sweat off. His v line was clear as day and I’m sure all the girls drooled over him.
As my gaze started to go even lower I heard a throat clear once again. He had a wide grin on his face that showed it was clear he caught me drooling over him. s**t I was now blushing. Can it get any worse?
