The visitor
In her small studio apartment, Evangeline Harper was surrounded by canvases and paint brushes, with the smell of turpentine blending with the busy noises of the city. Her disheveled up#do showcased dark hair with several strands outlining her face, as her entrancing brown eyes fixated on the canvas ahead. Partially obscured by the light of her desk lamp, her captivating characteristics, defined by a strong concentration, could still be seen. The colorful painting, featuring a mix of blue and green tones, aimed to depict the calmness she longed for but struggled to attain.
Her artistic trance was interrupted by a gentle knock on the door. The clock hanging on the wall displayed almost eleven in the evening, a strange time for guests to arrive. Eva scowled with irritation, then cleaned her paint-covered hands with a rag before walking towards the door. She had not anticipated visitors, and multiple unwelcome interruptions crossed her mind.
Upon opening the door, she discovered a man standing there, impeccably attired in a carefully tailored dark suit. He had a striking presence, with a rigid and formal posture, and a face that radiated professional calm. He introduced himself as Nathaniel Turner, Xander Sterling’s assistant.
“Ms. Harper, "Nathaniel said with a courteous nod. “I hope I’m not disturbing you.”
Eva’s eyes narrowed. "It’s late. How can I help you ?"
Nathaniel’s gaze was steady, though there was a hint of something inscrutable behind his calm exterior. “Mr. Sterling has sent me a proposal for you. I assure you, it’s something that could significantly benefit you and your sister.”
Eva stiffened at the mention of Xander Sterling. The name conjured images of wealth and power that she had always avoided. She had spent years distancing herself from the world of luxury and the complications it brought, having seen its destructive effects on her own family.
She was wondering why the top bachelor would be interested in a small artist like her. Xander Sterling is a well-known billionaire with lots of luxurious assets and wealth.
“Mr. Sterling?” Eva repeated, her voice taut with disbelief. “Why would he be interested in me?”
Nathaniel maintained his professional demeanor. “Mr. Sterling is aware of your sister’s condition and the financial strain it has placed on you. He wishes to offer you a commission that would substantially assist with her medical expenses.”
Eva felt her heart skip a beat when Lila was mentioned. The invoices had been accumulating, each one a heavy symbol of her lack of power. She was torn between her fierce pride and the urgent need to care for her sister, causing her mind to race.
"I refuse to take charity," Eva stated firmly, her voice tinged with determination. “I don’t want anything from Mr. Sterling.”
Nathaniel’s gaze softened, but his voice remained measured. “I understand your reluctance. However, this is not merely charity. Mr. Sterling believes your work deserves recognition and is offering you a significant commission for a project he has in mind.”
Eva’s jaw tightened. She always thought it was important to work for what she had, so the thought of taking money from someone she saw as part of a corrupt system went against her beliefs. However, Lila's declining health and increasing medical expenses hovered ominously over her.
“Why does he care?” Eva asked finally, her voice betraying her internal conflict. “Why would he offer this to me now?”
Nathaniel’s eyes held a glimmer of something, perhaps sincerity or understanding. “Mr. Sterling has his reasons. Sometimes, circumstances compel even the most distant of people to act. He truly means his offer and wants to talk about the specifics with you face-to-face.
Eva turned her gaze, her thoughts a jumble of conflicting feelings. Her autonomy, always her protection, now appeared to hinder the assistance she urgently sought. She was aware of Xander Sterling's reputation as a billionaire with suspicious associations, and she had no interest in getting involved in his circles. But the reality of Lila’s situation was unrelenting.
“Alright,” Eva said reluctantly. “I’ll meet with him. But I want to hear the offer directly from him.”
Nathaniel’s face registered a subtle relief. “I’ll arrange a meeting for tomorrow morning. Mr. Sterling will be expecting you.”
When Nathaniel went away, Eva sensed a slight sense of unease. As she observed him strolling down the hallway, her mind whirled with thoughts, noticing the sharp difference between his posh suit and the modesty of her own life. This meeting, although appearing simple, seemed like the start of something bigger and more complex than what she had expected.
After shutting the door, Eva rested her back against it, her thoughts still spinning. Looking at the artwork on the easel, she noticed its bright colors appearing muted in comparison to her heavy thoughts. She had always taken pride in her capacity to control her life and support Lila, but now she was confronted with a choice that could change everything she had worked hard to safeguard.
The idea of encountering Xander Sterling the next morning loomed over her like a dark cloud. She understood that accepting his proposal would involve entering a realm she had shunned for a long time, a realm of wealth and authority she inherently mistrusted. However, when considering Lila, her determination started to falter. The thought of providing her sister with the best care possible was a powerful motivator.
With the weight of the decision ahead, Eva's heart felt heavy as she made her way back to her studio. Her sister's needs conflicted with her pride and principles, causing her to feel conflicted and troubled.
She started tidying up her studio, her actions automatic as she got ready for a day that was expected to lead her to finally encounter the person she had been avoiding. The upcoming encounter with Xander Sterling wasn't only an opportunity for financial help - it was an entrance to a realm that could provide her with a way out or trap her in unknown ways.
Putting her paints and brushes away, Eva felt a sense of fear and hesitation. Her sense of autonomy had always protected her, but now it seemed like it could be a hindrance. The next day would challenge her unexpectedly, making her face her sister's situation and Xander Sterling's intimidating presence.
Taking one final look at the canvas, Eva inhaled deeply, preparing herself for the task to come.
