Kate gasped with pain as her left arm went num. She placed her right hand above her heart fearing it would burst out of her chest as it tightened with pressure. Kate started shaking as she gasped for air while her eyes heated up with tears. Dusk turned toward Dawn not understanding or knowing what to do, suddenly Kate was lying unconscious on the floor. Alec and Caleb finally made their way through the crowd asking her what had happened.
“I don’t know” Dusk said as Dawn helped her up. She looked down at Kate as her brother Caleb held her tightly in his arms. Alec knelt down beside Kate as he began to shake her, trying desperately to wake her. Dusk watched as the feeling of panic began to overcome her. Kate wasn’t waking up. Everyone in the cafeteria was starting to get up out of the tables and gather around them.
“Is she alright?” Dusk asked Caleb, her voice coming out shaky. She knelt down closer to Kate. Caleb looked at Dusk and shook his head as he told Seth, Holly’s little brother, to go get the school nurse. Seth ran out of the cafeteria as Dusk looked at Kate; her skin was as pale as the grave. Dusk didn’t know what she had done but wanted to help. She reached out to pull Kate’s dress down touching her leg. As soon as her skin made contact with Kate’s leg, she could see the color return to Kate’s pale face. She awoke gasping for air. Kate inhaled deeply as her brother Caleb tried to sit her up. Her body sagged against Caleb as he stroked her hair. She seemed to be a bit dazed as she sat on Caleb’s lap, until Kate saw that it was Dusk who was touching her, and completely freaked out.
“Get away from me,” Kate said slapping Dusk’s hand away as she struggle to get off the floor. She reached for Caleb to help her as she stood and faced Dusk.
“I’m sorry.” Dusk said standing up. “I didn’t think you would faint.”
“I did not faint.” Kate said challengingly.
“Okay,” Dusk put her hands in front of Kate as Dawn noticed her sister’s eyes. Dusk’s eyes had changed from their normal brown to light honey with white specs around the pupil. Dawn acted quickly upon seeing Dusk’s eyes and hauled Dusk backwards by the collar of her shirt pulling her jackets hood over her head, covering her face and hiding her eyes. Clowe and Dawn dragged Dusk towards the exit away from the cafeteria as Seth entered with the school nurse.
“I have to stay,” Clowe told Dusk and Dawn, “I’m the freshmen student body president, so I should stay and figure out what’s going to happen.”
“Okay,” the girls said in unison. Clowe turned and ran back into the cafeteria just as Kate began to scream insults at the school nurse. Dawn shoved the hood of Dusk’s jacket over her head as Dusk tried to take her hood off. Dawn ushered her big sister towards the closest girl’s bathroom. She shoved Dusk through the doors of the girl’s bathroom and immediately began to check all the stalls, just to make sure that they were alone.
After Dawn made sure that they were alone, she turned on the cold water in the first sink of the bathroom and immediately began to fill it up. Dawn grabbed Dusk and pulled down her hood, then pushed her sister’s face down into the cold water hoping that it would calm Dusk down. Dusk let Dawn keep her head under the water; trying to concentrate on the silence that came with having ones head under water. When Dusk finally came up for air, about a minute later, she was shocked at what see saw in the bathroom mirror. She saw a face staring back at her through the mirror that wasn’t hers. The girl in the mirror had eyes as pale as the moon that shimmered white like the sun.
Holy crap my eyes are freaking crazy! Dusk thought to Dawn.
They look like that BBC show we watch. What’s it called again? Dawn asked.
Merlin.
Merlin, that’s right. Damn, now I’m thinking about that Merlin guy.
“Ha, ha, ha!” Dusk laughed at Dawn’s obvious attempt to distract her thoughts from her image in the mirror. Dusk splashed more water on her face trying not to panic. She looked up again, really studying the image in the mirror. Her skin in the mirror was paler, her eye lashes seemed fuller and longer, and her jet black hair had somehow curled slightly. If Dusk didn’t know any better, she would have said that she was wearing make up. Dusk looked back down into the sink not wanting to worry Dawn with her glowing eyes. She turned the cold water faucet off and placed her face once again inside the water.
“Hey, are you okay?” Dawn asked. Dusk could hear the concern in her sisters’ voice.
“Yeah” Dusk answered back surprised to hear her voice was steady and not shaking.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what” Dusk asked.
“For getting you all worked up like that. You know, with Kate and everything.”
“It’s okay.”
“Are your eyes still doing that freaky glow thing?” Dawn asked walking to Dusk’s side, “Come on girl, let’s see.” Dawn told Dusk as Dusk put both hands on each side of the sink trying to steady her self and stared up at Dawn through the mirror.
“Holy Krishna! Your eyes are the brightest I’ve ever seen them,” Dawn said grabbing Dusk by the shoulders. She turned her sister around trying to get a better look at her. “It’s not going away either,” Dawn said, “Holy crapness Dusk! It’s never ever lasted this long before.” Dawn told Dusk. Dusk looked back at her sister,
“Yeah, thanks, ‘cause I hadn’t noticed that little fact.”
“I’m just saying.” Dawn told her. Dusk nodded her head at her sister as she thought to herself, it’s true. The glowing eyes have never lasted more then a few seconds after I’ve used my shadow jumping. It’s never been this long. Dusk thought. The longest I can remember was like five seconds.
“Yet you’ve never been so amped as you were with Kate,” Dawn said, “and what the trash was up with that anyways? What did you do to Kate?”
“I don’t know”
“Well you did something. She went down like…bam.” Dawn said motioning her hands in a smack down move.
You’re right. I felt strong, alive, and powerful back in that lunchroom. Dusk thought back to Dawn leaning against the sink of the girl’s bathroom. Dusk looked up and asked, “Do you think anyone noticed my eyes?”
“Naw, I don’t think so,” Dawn responded, “At least I don’t think that anyone noticed. People were sort of more concerned with Kate and all her dramatics. I don’t think anyone even noticed you, let alone your crazy eyes.” Dusk rolled her eyes at her sister as Dawn began to look at herself in the mirror, “I mean come on, fainting is so over exaggerated. Kate looked like she was going to hurl, keel over, and die. It was hilarious.”
“Dawn,” Dusk smacked her sister on the shoulder. Dawn of course continued without skipping a beat.
“Even with that blonde wonder twin brother of hers and Prince Charming kneeling down next to her” Dawn exclaimed and then started smiling, “It was priceless.” Dawn looked like she would burst out into song any minute now which made Dusk feel better.
“Kate’s different” Dusk said running her wet fingers through her hair, “she was glowing green.”
“Yeah that girl’s a freak! But she’ll think twice before messing with us. I mean now that you went all Vulcan ninja on her in front of everybody.” Dawn laughed, “Aw, memories.”
“No Dawn, I mean she’s different, like us different. She was glowing green” Dusk said as she began pacing back and forth.
Dawn looked at her shocked, “You noticed that too?”
“Apparently,” Dusk said sarcastically “Her eyes, her hair, her skin, her everything was green yet no one but us seemed to notice. She looked just like you do every time you use your gift.”
“I do not turn green!” Dawn looked at Dusk offended. “Wait a minute do I turn green?”
“No. it’s more like a pink-ish color. But the glow’s the same.”
“Wow”
Dusk continued to pace and began thinking about how much she could have hurt Kate. Dusk stopped abruptly in front of her sister, “Dawn you didn’t read anything in the brochure, right? You haven’t seen anything weird or felt anything off about this school?” she asked.
“No, but then again I was a little too preoccupied with wanting to hit Kate’s face with my fist.” Dusk couldn’t stop thinking about how much she could have hurt Kate,
“And you didn’t read anything in the brochure. You haven’t seen anything weird or felt anything off about this school?” she asked.
“Really Dusk” Dawn asked sarcastically, “I think I would have noticed if the school brochure had said welcome to Xavier’s school for the young and freaky,” Dawn said mockingly.
Dusk sighed, “This is just great! School hasn’t even started and I’m already starting to go crazy from being trapped on this island” she said laughing as she thought of a million other reasons for what could be happening.
“And you haven’t felt anything from anyone. Anyone, like when you’re with me. No extra vibes or anything like that?” Dusk asked as Dawn stared at her self in the mirror.
“Nah, but then again, it’s not like I’ve been paying particular attention to anyone.”
“Anyone except for Logan,” Dusk smiled at her sister.
“Mmm…Logan” Dusk’s and Dawn’s minds started to wonder again about what could be going on. Suddenly she remembered what Dawn had said moments before about Kate. “I forgot that Kate had a twin brother.” Dusk said looking at Dawn.
“Yeah the blond sexy, Caleb, he was kneeling right next to her.”
“Did I hurt him too?”
Dawn shook her head, “not that I noticed.”
“And who did you mean by Prince Charming?” Dusk said looking confused.
“Mr. Alec Heart.” She giggled and continued, “He looked totally panicked” she said, “It was weird to see him running to Kate’s side like that, when he’s been basically full on stalking you” Dawn laughed, “but on the other hand he could be acting like that because he’s Kate’s boyfriend.”
“Alec is Kate’s boyfriend?” Dusk asked feeling suddenly uncomfortable, “Then why?”
“Come on Dusk, I mean if you had Kate for a girlfriend wouldn’t you be checking out other girls. Kate is a nightmare” Dawn said laughing.
Dusk looked at her sister with surprise. She wanted to ask how she knew this, but she answered her before she could say anything, “Jack and Nick Winters, you know them, I introduced you to them today at the table, before that whole craziness happened… you know…”
“You mean before the WWF smack down.”
“Yeah,” Dawn said smiling like it was Christmas day, “Their Angel’s twin brothers. Those two boys, Jack and Nick, have the 411 on everybody and everything that happens at this school. I have never met anyone in my entire life like those two guys. They talk just as much as I do and they like it.” Dawn expressed. “Anyways Alec Heart is also the Student Body President,” She said, finishing looking at herself in the mirror, “He’s like the Prince of the school or the golden boy of this place, you could say.”
Great! That’s all I needed, to be in like with the idol of the school, Dusk chuckled to her self as she thought about it.
“Your eyes look better,” Dawn said looking at her, “They’re a little more normal now.”
Dusk turned to the mirror and checked herself out one more time. “I guess we can go back to the room now, hopefully everyone will still be in the cafeteria. I really don’t have the energy to deal with any more drama after that cafeteria mess.”
“Don’t worry Dusk. I’ve got your back if anyone wants to start crap. Twitches forever,” Dusk said holding out her fist for her sister to bump it.
“We’re not witches Dawn.” Dusk rolled her eyes at her sister.
“Wonder twin powers activate?”
“Fine, Wonder Twin powers activate,” Dusk said as she fist bumped Dawn and they both left the girls bathroom, laughing as they went.
