Chapter 35He sat with his back against a large slab of rock that edged the riverbed. It was about six feet high and ten feet wide, nestled up against the raised earth of the bank among smaller rocks and brush. For the moment it was an ideal spot, low and probably four hundred feet from the road, facing away from it. There he could use the tight beam of the flashlight on his shoulder without anyone on the road noticing the glare. Unwinding and peeling off the long strands of duct tape from his shoulder was a slow, painful process. It pulled at his skin and hair, and the wet and dry blood made it difficult at times to assess what he was prying at.
