CHAPTER 1
Mrs. Okafor came back from the farm carrying a big basin apparently tried. In the basin were a small hoe for weeding, a cutlasses, a can of drinks water and some dried wood made up of Mostly stub of shrubs she gathered from the farm. Amadi rushed to welcome,“ he greeted.
"How are you,. Amadi?"asked Mrs okafor.
"I'm fine, mum. Thank you," he replied
"What about your younger ones?" Mrs. okafor asked further.
"Chichi is sleeping, "replied Amadi." I have just give her evening bath. But Nonso is playing over there. I do not want to give him a bath yet for fear that he might later go back to the dust. When he has played to his satisfaction, I will bathe him."
Mrs. okafor put down her load, took an armchair and sat down. “Ewss!” she exclaimed. “Amadi go and bring me a glass of water."Amadi rushed in and soon, came back with a glass of water. “Here is it, mum," he said. Mrs Okafor collected the glass. “ Thank you ,” she said to Amadi. She gulped down the water and handed the glass back to Amadi and said, “Get me another glass of water,“Take, mum,” he said. Mrs. Okafor collected the second glass and also emptied it into her parched throat and exclaimed, “A AAA!”
“Mum,"said Amadi, “please try and be coming back in time. You left for the farm at about 6:30 a.m. and came back this late evening. You bore the terrible heat of today's scorching sun ⛅ , Which was no longer have a father and we will not like to loose you too.”
"You are not going to loose me, my son,"said Mrs.Okafor. “I'm only struggling to get food for you, my children. Anyhow, I endeavor to be coming back earlier."
“ Thank you, mum," greeted Amadi. Amadi then dashed into the room and soon resurface with a white official envelope smiling ?. “Guess what, mum," he said. Mrs. Okafor saw the envelope, but had no slightest ideas of it's whereabout nor the contents. She couldn't even Guess who it was that had written her because she was born and was not expecting any either. Still confused and wondering who it could be, Amadi landed the envelope over to her. She opened it and read, but instead of rejoicing, she looked up in grief and tears began to drop from her eyes.
