Serine
My lungs ached and my limbs burned with the exertion as I ran faster through the forest I was in. For four days I had been tracking the cyclops that had managed to step out of the veil and into the mortal world. I skid to a halt cursing as I lost that trail.
“f***k!” I scream into the void, causing the birds in the trees to flee.
My phone beeps as a text message comes through from my friend and mentor Abbi
Abbi: How’s it going out there Serine? Any luck yet?
Me: Not yet, I lost the trail in this forest that I found myself in.
Abbi: Be Careful Serine, cyclops are highly unpredictable and very dangerous. Plus your father is getting antsy about this monster out on the loose.
Me: Yeah, well he can go f***k himself, I’m tired of being his pawn. I’ll be careful though, I’ll pick up the trail again I’m sure of it. But there is something strange about this forest.
Abbi: What do you mean?
Me: I’m not sure, it feels different. Any way, i’ll be in touch, I know my aura will attract other monsters so I can’t stay in the same area for too long
Abbi: Yeah, talk to you soon
I put my phone back in my pocket and turn, trying to get my bearings. I check my small bag, making sure my bow was still there. Looking in I found it still there along with a few changes of clothes and my meager rations. I stood up, closing the bag and readjusting my belt. Feeling the hilt of my sword against my hand.
I really need to get moving, I thought to myself. Us demigods in general have a certain aura that attracts monsters if we are not careful. Mine was one of the strongest auras however because of my bloodline, my father Zeus, was the king of the gods, the ruler over Olympus, blah blah blah.
My mom was of Irish descent, second generation American. Most of my looks I got from her, my porcelain skin dotted with freckles, my dark red hair, and my build, I was curvy, hourglass figure, but lean with all of the training and missions I go on. I had gotten my father’s eyes though, stormy gray.
Taking a deep breath, I continue walking in the direction I was facing. I honestly couldn’t figure out how I lost a giant one eyed creature. Seriously, they are surprisingly light on their feet and quiet. I walk for what seemed like hours, the sun was starting to set and I was getting hungry. I kept walking though, not wanting to make camp yet, the further away I get from the spot where I lost the trail, the safer I would be.
I walked for a few more miles, which was difficult because it was now dark and I didn’t know these woods. I kept tripping over roots and fallen branches, but as I look up, I see lights in the distance. It was odd, a town deep in the woods. I idly wonder why it was there. I kept going towards the lights until I made it out of the woods and into the outskirts of a small community of people.
The streets were alive with the hustle and bustle of small town life, it looked like a cute little town. I walked further in heading down the main street. I stopped in front of a cafe, hoping they took cards for payment. I had no cash and I didn’t see any ATMs around, all I had was my MasterCard, which had well over 2 million in the account. My father, though he was never around, always made sure I wanted for nothing.
I walked through the cafe doors, a little bell chiming as I entered.
“Welcome, can I get you anything?” a woman maybe 2 years older than me asked
“Actually yes” I replied “Could I get a water and something to eat?” I ask
“Of course, the house special today is grilled cod and a side of fries, is that ok?” she asked
“That is absolutely fine,” I told her. “Also, is there a motel or inn around?”
She purses her lips for a second, thinking “Yes, there is one right around the corner, can’t miss it. It’s the only building directly on the corner.”
“Thank you” I say as she leaves the dining room to go put my order in.
I sit down at a table with a sigh, my head starting to hurt. Digging through my bag I find a bottle of painkillers. I take 2 out of the bottle and set the pills on the table before closing the bottle and placing it back in my bag.
The waitress comes out of the kitchen with my food and water, setting it down on the table in front of me just as the bell over the door chimed again and 2 very attractive men enter the cafe.
“We’ll take our usual please Em.” the one on the left said to the girl who just left my table.
“Of course, please sit.” she replied nervously, glancing slightly in my direction as if trying to decide to say anything more.
She looks down at the floor and quickly turns around and basically sprints out of the room and into the kitchen. That’s when they turn to me, and the one on the left freezes, as if he just noticed me sitting there.
There was something about him, but I couldn’t quite place my finger on what it was. I looked at him, noticing his features. His hair was short cut and a rich brown color. His eyes were the color of the sea. And his face was very handsome, square jaw, light stubble lining it. He looks me up and down, and I suddenly felt self conscious. I know my clothes were covered in dirt and i had a few leaves the stuck to my curls. His eyes darkened and his friend whispered something to him, pulling his attention off of me. I let out a breath that I didn’t know I was holding and watched them sit down.
I scarfed my food down, hungrier than I thought. To be fair though, granola bars and beef jerky only went so far. I grabbed my pills off of the table and popped them into my mouth, drinking the water down quickly. I paid my bill and left in a hurry, I was anxious to get out of there and out from under that man’s gaze.
I ran down the street and stopped at the building on the corner, just as the girl said it was. I looked inside, the ‘no vacancy’ sign was off. There was an older gentleman inside, he smiled at me.
“Can I help you miss?” he asks
“Yes, I’d like a room please.” I say
“ For how long?” he replies
“Just for the night.” I tell him, getting nervous. I know the longer I stay here, the more danger these people are in. I’d rest here for the night and move on in the morning, hoping that I’ll pick up the trail of our wayward cyclops.
I watch the clerk fill out some information and runs my card. He then hands me a key and shows me to my room. I step through the door and I place my bag on the desk. I open my bag and grab out some pajamas and head to the bathroom to shower. I step under the stream of hot water and sigh as my muscles relax. I wash my hair and body, then I rinse the soap off, turn off the water, step out of the shower stall and dry off. I get dressed and rummage through my bag for a hairbrush and a hair tie. I run the brush through my hair working out the tangles and then I braid it down my back so it doesn’t become a tangled nightmare in the morning. I lay back in bed and stretch out under the covers. I lay there and realize it has been at least a week since the last time I slept in an actual bed. I let the softness of the mattress and the warmth of the blanket lull me to sleep.
