Chapter 52

"Slap!" The crisp sound echoed across the site. John fell to the ground, his ears ringing. He sat up, wide-eyed, staring at the man standing before him, feeling a cold chill run down his spine. Before Bob could react, he pushed Ray angrily and shouted, "You dare to hit John? Believe it or not, he'll call Boss Ray to kill your whole family! Guys, teach this i***t a lesson, I..." Bob's words were cut off as John, realizing who he was dealing with, jumped up and kicked him viciously. What followed was a furious beating. "f**k you! You dare hit Boss Ray! Do you wanna die?" Bob screamed in pain, curling up on the ground and covering his head until Ray finally shouted for John to stop. If Ray hadn't intervened, John might have beaten Bob to death. "Boss, I didn't know you were here… Otherwise, I wouldn't have dared to agree to his request!" John pointed at the groaning Bob, his face full of regret. "Hmph, so if I weren't here, you would feel free to cause havoc?" Ray's eyes glared furiously. "I didn't rise from a street thug to the Boss of the Northside by bullying others. I earned it by winning people's respect!" "Yes, yes, winning respect. I'll remember that!" John quickly echoed. Ray snorted coldly, then said to Jack, "Mr. Steele, I'm sorry you had to witness this. It's my fault for not keeping my men in check. Don't worry, I'll compensate for any losses on the site tenfold. You won't suffer a single penny's loss." Jack nodded. "Handle it." He and Emily ignored the half-dead Bob on the ground and left the site. John immediately had his men drag Bob away and escape in the truck. "John, why was Boss Ray there?" Bob asked inside the truck, clutching his injured side. John thought for a moment and replied, "I heard Boss Ray used to work on construction sites before he made it big. Maybe he was passing by and felt nostalgic." "Then why was he so respectful to that guy, Jack?" Bob asked, still puzzled. "Are you f*****g blind?" John rolled his eyes. "Respectful? Boss Ray is the Boss of the Northside now. Other than the City Lord of Wyndcrest, who does he need to respect?" "Then why—" Bob began, but John cut him off. "Because Boss Ray is looking to clean up his image. You can't stay in the underworld forever. If he wants a new path, he has to clean up his act and become a legitimate businessman," John said, taking a drag from his cigarette. "So obviously, Boss Ray is here to talk business. You interrupted his business partner; of course, he'd be pissed." Bob fumed inwardly. 'Why was I so unlucky? Just as I was about to confront Emily, I ran into Boss Ray talking business. It's all that b***h Emily's fault for getting the lucrative slum redevelopment project.' 'She must have sold herself again. How else could she land all the good deals?' Bob seethed with resentment. When he returned to the Foster family estate, he exaggerated the story. But as soon as Ladyship Foster heard, her face turned uneasy, and she nervously said, "Bob, doesn't this mean we've completely offended Boss Ray?" "Don't worry, Grandma." Bob rubbed his swollen face. "No matter how powerful Boss Ray is, he's only influential in the Northside. Our family is in the Southside; he can't extend his reach here." "But…" Ladyship Foster hesitated. "I heard that the Boss of the Southside was killed recently. Now the entire southern underworld is in chaos." "What, the Boss of the Southside was…?" Bob's face changed drastically, filled with shock. Who could have killed such a terrifying figure? If Boss Ray decides to unite the entire underworld of Wyndcrest, would they have any good days left since they had offended him? Thinking of this, Bob said, "Grandma, we must make Emily apologize to Boss Ray on our behalf!" "What?" Ladyship Foster was stunned. "It's all that b***h's fault! If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have offended Boss Ray. She started all this; shouldn't she apologize for us?" Bob gritted his teeth. "But she won't listen to us now!" Ladyship Foster said, pounding her chest. "Don't worry, I have a plan." Bob grinned wickedly, a sinister plan forming in his mind. *** Meanwhile, Carry and Chloe had just had a s*x in a luxurious villa, lying naked on the bed with flushed faces. At that moment, Carry's phone rang. He picked it up and saw it was his subordinate. He asked immediately, "Did you find the assassin?" Carry figured Jack's backer was Boss Ray, who he dared not to offend, so he decided to eliminate Jack directly by hiring an assassin. "Young Master, I've contacted the assassin!" His subordinate's excited voice came through. "Good. Tell them to bring me Jack's head, and I'll transfer the remaining two million dollars to their account once the job's done," Carry said lazily, as if discussing something trivial. "Understood!" The subordinate replied before hanging up. *** Jack escorted Emily home and then headed to Dragon Crest Villa. Cindy had been attending classes for a week, and he wanted to check on her progress. When he arrived at the villa, Tina was cooking for Cindy. The girl was focusing on her study at the desk, and didn't noticed Jack's arrival. "Mr. Steele, you're here." Tina greeted him warmly. "Ms. Trump, how has my sister been doing with her studies?" Jack asked. "Mr. Steele, Cindy's dedication has amazed me. She's spent most of her time studying," Tina said with a sigh. "I'm worried that it might affect her health, but one night, she cried in her sleep, saying she'd study hard and begged you not to leave her…" Hearing this, Jack felt a pang in his heart. Cindy was working so hard because she was afraid he'd abandon her again. 'What a silly girl!' Jack, who hadn't shed a tear in eight years of warfare, suddenly felt his nose sting. But then, his expression stiffened as his instincts kicked in. He had caught a glimpse of a red dot flashing inside the house from the corner of his eye. Years of life-and-death battles told him that a sniper had the house in their sights! Jack's hair stood on end. "Get down!" Jack shouted.
