CHAPTER 1
Cecelia Edward had barely stepped into the office when Sandy’s voice came rushing toward her before she could even settle in. “Cece!” Cece paused briefly, her hand still resting on the strap of her bag as she let out a quiet breath. There was a certain predictability to mornings like this, and Sandy was always part of it. Energetic, curious, and constantly carrying the latest piece of information as though it were breaking news that could not wait. “Have you heard?” Sandy asked, already pulling a chair close to Cece’s desk without waiting for permission. Her eyes were bright with excitement, her entire posture leaning forward as if she could not physically contain what she had to say. “About the new director?” Cece placed her bag down and sat, her movements calm and measured. She turned on her system, watching the screen come to life before responding. “Good morning, Sandy.” Sandy waved her hand impatiently. “Cece, I am serious. He resumed today. And not just resumed, he came in early. People are saying he is already in the building.” Cece typed in her password, her attention still fixed on the screen. “That is nice.” Sandy stared at her in disbelief. “That is all you have to say?” Cece finally glanced at her, a faint hint of amusement in her eyes. “What exactly do you want me to say?” “I heard he is tall,” Sandy continued, lowering her voice slightly as though sharing something confidential. “And very handsome. Mika said she caught a glimpse of him.” At the mention of Mika, Cece’s gaze flickered briefly across the office. Mika sat at her desk, pretending to be busy but clearly listening. Cece shook her head slightly, a small smile forming before she looked away again. “You people and appearance,” she murmured. Sandy leaned closer. “This one is different. Even HR came in early. You know they never do that unless something big is happening.” Cece did not respond. Instead, she focused on her system, opening the files she needed for the day. There was comfort in routine, in the quiet order of tasks waiting to be completed. Reports, emails, deadlines. Things she could control. Unlike people. “Anyway,” Sandy said, clearly unwilling to let the conversation end, “they will introduce him today. Very soon. So just be ready.” “For what exactly?” Cece asked, her tone calm. Sandy grinned. “First impressions matter.” Cece let out a soft laugh and shook her head. “You can impress him on my behalf.” She stood before Sandy could respond, smoothing down her outfit as she made her way toward the office kitchen. Behind her, she could still hear Sandy muttering something, but she did not pay attention. The kitchen offered a brief escape from the noise. It was quiet, with only the low hum of appliances filling the space. Cece reached for a cup and poured herself some coffee, her movements automatic and familiar. This part of her morning was simple and predictable, something she could rely on. She added sugar, stirring slowly, then paused before reaching for another packet. The bitterness of the coffee had always grounded her, a small reminder that not everything needed to be softened. As she tore open the second sachet, a voice echoed faintly from outside. “Everyone should gather in the meeting room.” Cece stilled for a moment, her brows drawing together slightly. That was unusual. It was too early for any meeting, especially one involving the entire staff. She stirred her coffee again, slower this time, already guessing the reason. The new director. Of course. A quiet sigh left her lips as she picked up her cup. “Just what I needed,” she murmured to herself. When she stepped back into the office, the atmosphere had already shifted. Conversations were louder, more animated. People were whispering, adjusting their clothes, some even checking their reflections on their phones. Sandy’s voice rose above the rest. “I told you,” she whispered excitedly to Mika. “I saw him. He is actually fine.” Mika laughed softly. “You say that about everyone.” “No, this one is different.” Cece rolled her eyes slightly as she picked up her notepad and turned toward the meeting room. Sandy quickly fell into step beside her. “Did you hear?” she asked again. “Yes,” Cece replied, taking a small sip of her coffee. “Let us just get it over with.” They walked in with the rest of the staff, the low hum of curiosity filling the air. The meeting room was already half full, and more people continued to stream in behind them. Cece chose a seat somewhere in the middle, placing her cup carefully on the table in front of her. Sandy sat beside her, still whispering occasional comments, though Cece barely listened. Instead, she wrapped her fingers around her cup and stared down at it, letting the warmth seep into her skin. It steadied her, even if she did not know why she needed it. The room gradually filled until there were no empty seats left. After a few moments, the HR manager stepped forward, clearing his throat to draw everyone’s attention. “Good morning, everyone,” he began. The murmurs faded instantly. “Thank you for gathering on such short notice. As you all know, we have a new director joining us today. He brings with him years of experience, international exposure, and a strong record of excellence.” Sandy nudged Cece lightly, barely able to contain herself. Cece did not react. “It is my pleasure to introduce him.” The door opened. The sound was soft, but it carried across the room with a strange weight that made people turn instinctively. Cece did not look up immediately. She took one more sip of her coffee, unaware that everything was about to change. Footsteps followed. Calm, measured, confident. There was something about the presence that filled the room, something that shifted the air in a way she could not explain. Slowly, she lifted her gaze and the world seemed to stop. Her breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening as recognition struck with a force she was not prepared for. Alexander Philip. For a moment, nothing else existed. Not the room, not the people, not the surrounding voices. Just him. He looked different. Older, sharper, more composed. The warmth she once knew seemed buried beneath something colder, something more controlled. The boy she had loved was gone. In his place stood a man she barely recognized. At the front of the room, Alex greeted everyone with ease, his voice steady as he acknowledged the staff. But even as he spoke, his eyes moved across the room, scanning faces one after the other. Until they paused. There was a woman sitting somewhere in the middle, her face partially hidden by her hair. Something about her caught his attention immediately. She was not even looking at him properly, her posture slightly turned away, her gaze lowered as though she had no interest in what was happening. Yet there was something familiar. Something that made him look twice. His gaze lingered for a moment longer before he continued speaking, though the feeling did not leave him. Cece lowered her head quickly, her heart pounding so loudly it felt impossible that no one else could hear it. She had spent five years putting distance between herself and everything that reminded her of him. And now he was here, right in front of her. “Cece,” Sandy whispered urgently, gripping her arm. “Do you see him?” Cece did not respond. She could not trust her voice. At the front, Alexander took his seat, his expression composed even as something restless stirred beneath the surface. The HR manager began introducing staff members one after the other, calling out names and positions. Cece felt a knot form in her stomach. She knew it was coming. “Cecelia Edward.” Her name cut through the room. Slowly, she straightened, forcing herself to sit upright. Her movements were controlled, deliberate. She lifted her hand and brushed her hair back from her face, exposing herself fully to the room. Their eyes met. Alex froze. Recognition hit him instantly, sharp and undeniable. Cecelia. She was right there. Not a memory, not something buried in the past. His gaze remained fixed on her, disbelief flickering across his expression before he could mask it. Cece swallowed, steadying herself as she spoke. “I am Cecelia Edward,” she said, her voice calm and professional despite everything swirling inside her. “I work in the operations department.”
