Harry Houston, Denny Boyd, and four of their fellow officers, all members of the Rapid Deployment Unit, left the lounge bar of the Caledonian Hotel on Union Terrace just after four p.m. The six officers had been celebrating the successful conclusion of one of their biggest cases for some time, and had left the office at police headquarters on Queen Street some two hours previously, ready to enjoy their off-duty time. Having drunk more than one toast to the success achieved primarily though the forensic knowledge and capability of Harry Houston, they now walked together to the end of Union Terrace to the junction where it joined Union Street, the city's long main thoroughfare.
