The Divine Promise Long ago, on the banks of the clear waters of the Sarayu River, there stood a magnificent city named Ayodhya. Adorned with golden spires that touched the clouds and wide avenues lined with fragrant flowering trees, Ayodhya was a place of immense prosperity. Its people lived lives of great joy and abundance. The ruler of this dreamlike realm was King Dasharatha. A valiant warrior and a compassionate monarch, he was deeply loved by his subjects. Yet, as dusk fell upon the palaces of Ayodhya, a heavy shadow of sorrow would creep into the king's heart. He was growing older, but none of his three queens—Kausalya, Kaikeyi, or Sumitra—had been blessed with a child. There was no heir to carry forward the glory of the solar dynasty or to wear the crown of Ayodhya. Overwhelmed by the grief of not knowing his kingdom's future, King Dasharatha approached his royal guru, Sage Vashistha. "O Great Sage," Dasharatha pleaded with a trembling voice. "My palace is rich with gold, but there is not even the laughter of a child within it. What meaning is there in the life of a king who has no son to sustain his lineage?" Sage Vashistha closed his eyes and sank into meditation. He perceived realities far beyond the physical world. When he opened his eyes, a serene smile graced his face. "O King, do not lose heart. Perform the sacred 'Putrakameshti Yajna' to be blessed with progeny. The Divine will surely answer your prayers." On the banks of the Sarayu River, massive sacrificial altars rose toward the sky. Fragrant sandalwood logs, ghee, and medicinal herbs were offered into the sacrificial fire. Chants of sacred mantras reverberated through the valley like rumbling thunder. When the prayers reached their crescendo, the blazing sacrificial fire split into two. From the center of the fire altar emerged a majestic figure adorned in divine, glowing garments. In his hands, he held a silver vessel with a golden lid, filled with a divine nectar-like payasam. "Accept this, O King Dasharatha!" a resounding voice boomed from the sacrificial fire. "Distribute this sacred payasam among your queens. Your prayers have reached the heavens. Soon, great-souled sons shall be born in your household." Filled with boundless joy, Dasharatha hurried back to the palace. With loving care, he gave half of the divine payasam to Kausalya. Of the remainder, he gave half to Kaikeyi. Seeing Sumitra standing nearby, both Kausalya and Kaikeyi shared a portion each from their respective shares with Sumitra. Months passed. A tranquil and beautiful atmosphere enveloped Ayodhya. The sky turned a clear, bright blue, cool and transparent waters flowed in the rivers, and a gentle breeze carrying the fragrance of wild jasmine swept through the city. Thus arrived the ninth day of that spring season. From the inner chambers of the royal palace came the cry of a newborn infant. Kausalya gave birth to a baby boy. With the complexion of rain-clouds and eyes resembling lotus petals, the infant's smile filled the hearts of all who beheld him with warmth. They named him Rama. Shortly thereafter, Kaikeyi gave birth to the radiant Bharata. Sumitra was blessed with twins: the valiant and loyal Lakshmana, and the calm yet powerful Shatrughna. As those four princes lay side by side in their golden cradles, the entire city of Ayodhya plunged into joyous celebrations. Flowers rained down from the heavens, temple bells rang out, and the people poured into the streets to dance. The once-silent palace of Ayodhya was finally filled with the laughter of little ones. Yet far away in the celestial realms, the gods looked down upon all this with knowing smiles, for they well knew that the child named Rama was no ordinary prince, but a divine light descended to destroy the growing forces of evil in the world.
