Being borne into a poor family, Cynthia struggled alongside her family to be able to make ends meet. Her family could only afford to train her in school up till high school level; she knew that quite well, however she wanted to further her studies at all costs. Her dream was to be a renowned author and she wanted to study linguistics, she loved studying different languages. She kept thinking of how to work part time jobs to be able to save up money for her tuition, not until her best friend introduced her to an idea that was going to change her life.

A golden opportunity
"So I was in my room studying when my mom came to tell me that we had a visitor and that she wanted to talk to me. I was surprised because I didn't know of any woman that would visit me at home but I went anyway. Entering the living room I ............ " Kimberly looked at Cynthia and noticed that she was lost. She nudged her shoulder " Hey Cynthia, are you okay?" Cynthia startled. " Yes?" "You weren't even listening to me, I was talking to myself this whole time?". Cynthia pressed her forehead and sighed " I'm so sorry Kim, I was thinking about something. I really have a lot on my mind right now. What were you saying? "Don't tell you're still worrying about that same thing. Look, nothing is going to change if you keep killing yourself slowly in this manner. Well, your worries have come to an end, it seems your prayer has been answered". Kimberly smiled. Cynthia was clearly confused and she made no attempt to hide it, " What do you mean by that?" " We had a visitor yesterday, a woman precisely. My parents said she was an old friend and guess what? She offered to take me abroad to study if I do well in my final exams". "Really?" Cynthia was wide eyed with surprise. "And you know the most shocking part of the whole fandom?" Kimberly drew closer to Cynthia gesturing her to come closer and when she did, Kim whispered to her." "She said I could introduce some of my friends who are willing to further their studies abroad. I mentioned you and she said she was willing to sponsor you as long as you do well in your WASSCE. She also said she was going to sponsor everything including our flight down to our tuition, housing and feeding. I really can't wait for this to happen. " So what do you say? Wanna try it out?" Cynthia raised her eye brows," Really? You can't be asking me that right now. Who'd miss out on a golden opportunity like this?" Her eye brows furrowed a bit, "But then, this all sounds too good to be true. I mean, I know there are good people out there but you know, this just feels surreal". "I know, right?" Kimberly chipped in, " But then we'll find out in a month; if this is real or not". "Well I'm gonna tell my parents about it first and see how they'll react but I bet you a thousand that they wouldn't refuse such an offer." Cynthia and Kimberly have been friends for over a decade, the bond between the two friends was so great it couldn't be broken. The two girls also extended their friendship to their families. Despite the difference in their social status, the two families got along quite well. Kimberly's family was wealthy so they were able to provide her with anything to make her comfortable. She was the youngest child and the only daughter in their family of six. Cynthia on the other hand was from a poor family, she had four brothers and no sister, so she looked up to Kimberly who was two years older than her. They ended up in the same class because Cynthia was too smart for her age and had to be moved one class ahead of her mates. "No you're not going anywhere" John, Cynthia's father said. "Father?! What do you mean by that?" Cynthia's face was red with surprise. "It is as you heard Cynthia, you're not going with that woman or whoever, abroad. For heaven's sake Cyndy, you don't know who that woman is, or what her intentions are. Yeah right, there are good people out there who are willing to help in any way they can, but there are also bad people out there who take advantage of people's weaknesses to get what they want. I don't want to take such risks with you Cynthia." "Father, life is all about risks besides she's a friend to Kimberly's family. If they're going to entrust their daughter with that woman, that means she can be trusted. Dad don't do this to me, please. I beg you, I'm just a stone throw away to actualizing my dreams, you can't crash it just like that." "I'm not crashing your dreams Cynthia. You're still young so you have a lot of time on your hands. Just look for a part time job and when you've saved up enough money, you can go to any school in Nigeria to study your dream course." "No father, I won't do that. Unfortunately for you dad, I'm going to display that stubborn spirit I've kept buried for so long. I've already spoken to the woman and she's coming here to see my parents in a few days. Father, I really need this, it's not like I'm asking you to sponsor my education abroad, I just need your approval, nothing more". By the time she was done, Cynthia already had tears flowing down her cheeks, she left her parents house and went straight to Kimberly's house to lay her complaints. "John, you need to listen to Cynthia, remember we cannot afford to sponsor her education in the university. I've never seen our child behave like this before and that's to show that this really hurt her a lot." Maria, Cynthia's mother said as she tried to convince her husband to approve of Cynthia's request. " I just wish you'll be able to see the point I'm driving at. Something about this whole thing doesn't seem right, I can feel it. I know Darlington and his family accepted to send their daughter but that doesn't mean that the woman should be trusted." " Can you agree just for Cynthia's sake? Do you really want to see our daughter in pain? I doubt you would want that to happen so just say yes to her. Even if something were to happen, I believe she'll be able to see herself through, you know she's strong spirited and smart. Pls just think this through." Mrs Kate showed up at Cynthia's house as planned. After exchanging pleasantries, she brought out a big brown envelope and laid the contents out on a table. "I heard everything from Cynthia so I decided to come personally to prove to you that she'll be safe with me. These are the documents on all the people I've helped so far and as you can see....." She gave John some of the documents and some to Maria. ".......they're all doing well, some of them have big companies in Abuja and Lagos so I can assure you that your daughter will be in safe hands and you have absolutely nothing to worry about." John put down his reading glasses, " it's okay, I've gone through the documents and I think I'll have no other option but to do this. Cynthia is my only daughter and it breaks my heart to see her in a bad mood, She has always brought laughter and happiness into this family but for these past few days, I've not seen her cheerful face, she doesn't even eat, neither does she go out. She's always cooped up in her room day after day. As a father, I cannot watch my child suffer because of my decision. I want her to be happy and if this is the only thing that'll make her happy, then I don't see any reason why I won't give my consent." "Thank you so much Father, I promise I won't disappoint you and Mother". Cynthia said while giving her father a hug. Preparations were made and their papers were got ready. After three weeks, Kimberly and Cynthia were ready to travel abroad to further their studies. Kimberly's parents threw a farewell party for the two girls, a day before their departure. And so the next day, as the girls got on the plane ready to depart, it was registered that none of the previous girls allegedly sponsored by Mrs Kate, ever saw the four walls of a university but this was to remain known only to her for many years to come. What then does she do with the girls? As it was her first time being in a plane, Cynthia held Kimberly tight in fright as the aircraft made its way up to the sky.
