CHAPTER ONE ~THE LETTER THAT SHOULDN'T EXIST
The rain had followed Claire Bennett for nearly six hours. It drummed steadily against the windows of the bus as endless pine forests stretched across the Montana countryside. Every mile carried her farther from the life she'd built in Seattle and closer to a town she'd spent years trying to forget. Black Hollow. Population: 3,418. A place where everyone knew everyone. A place where secrets survived longer than people. Claire stared out the window, her fingers tightening around the worn envelope resting in her lap. The handwriting on its front was unmistakable. Her sister's. For Claire. Open only if something happens to me. She had obeyed those words for almost three years. Then Lily Bennett died. The police called it an accident. Her car had gone off a mountain road during a thunderstorm. They found the vehicle crushed at the bottom of a ravine, but Claire had never believed the story—not completely. Lily had been careful. Too careful. And now, after years of silence, another envelope had arrived at Claire's apartment with no return address. Inside was only one sentence. She wasn't crazy. Come to Black Hollow. Nothing else. No signature. No explanation. Just those six words. The bus hissed to a stop. "Black Hollow," the driver announced. Claire stepped onto the wet pavement, pulling her coat tighter around herself. The town looked exactly as she remembered. A quiet main street. A small diner glowing with warm lights. An old church standing proudly on the hill. A sheriff's office. A pharmacy. Nothing looked dangerous. Nothing looked like the kind of place where someone could disappear without questions. Yet Lily had. Claire wheeled her suitcase toward the only hotel in town. The Hollow Inn. The elderly woman behind the reception desk smiled politely. "You must be Miss Bennett." Claire froze. "I... I haven't checked in yet." The woman's smile faltered for only a second. "Oh." She looked genuinely confused. "I was told you'd be arriving today." "Told by who?" The woman hesitated. "I... I don't remember." Claire forced a smile. "It's alright." But it wasn't. Someone had known she was coming. Someone had expected her. Room 214 overlooked the entire town. Claire unpacked only the essentials before taking out Lily's letter once more. The paper had yellowed with age. She unfolded it carefully. Claire... If you're reading this, then I was right. They're going to tell you I imagined everything. They'll say stress made me paranoid. Don't believe them. There is a child. They'll deny it. They'll tell you no baby was ever born. But I held her. If anything happens to me, find her before they do. And whatever happens... Don't trust the man everyone loves. The letter ended there. No name. No explanation. Only fear trapped between faded lines. Claire sighed. How could someone simply erase the existence of a child? It made no sense. Unless... Someone powerful wanted it that way. The following morning the rain finally stopped. Claire decided to start with the hospital. If Lily had given birth in Black Hollow, there had to be records. Hospitals didn't simply lose babies. The receptionist smiled warmly. "I'm looking for records from about three years ago," Claire said. "My sister was Lily Bennett." The woman's fingers paused above her keyboard. "I'm sorry." "What?" "There are no records under that name." Claire frowned. "Could you check again?" "I already have." Claire leaned closer. "Maybe under Lily Carter? She wasn't married but—" "There are no records." "That's impossible." The receptionist lowered her voice. "If I were you..." She glanced nervously toward the corridor. "...I'd stop asking." Before Claire could respond, footsteps echoed across the polished floor. A tall man in a navy suit approached. He looked to be in his early thirties. Dark hair. Sharp jawline. Grey eyes that seemed almost colourless. People greeted him as he passed. Morning, Mr. Vale. Good to see you, Adrian. Everyone smiled. Everyone respected him. Yet the moment his eyes landed on Claire... His smile disappeared. He walked straight toward her. "Claire Bennett." She blinked. "You know me?" "I know why you're here." A chill crept up her spine. "I don't think we—" "You should leave Black Hollow." His voice was calm. Almost gentle. "But if you stay..." His eyes darkened. "...you'll uncover things that should have stayed buried." Claire lifted her chin. "My sister died here." "I know." "I deserve answers." "No." His gaze never left hers. "You deserve to survive." Before Claire could ask another question, he turned and walked away. The receptionist looked pale. "Who is he?" She swallowed hard. "Adrian Vale." "And?" She whispered. "Don't let his kindness fool you." Claire looked back toward the entrance. He was gone. That evening, exhausted and more confused than ever, Claire returned to the hotel. Something felt wrong the moment she stepped into her room. The window was open. She was certain she'd closed it. Rainwater had soaked the carpet. Her suitcase had been moved. Her heart pounded. Slowly, she searched the room. Nothing appeared stolen. Then she noticed it. Lying neatly on the pillow was an old photograph. Claire picked it up with trembling fingers. It showed Lily. She was smiling. Cradling a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket. Standing beside her... was Adrian Vale. Scrawled across the back of the photograph in fresh black ink were five chilling words. YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO SEE THIS.
