Chapter 1: The Wedding Planner's Chaos
The rehearsal was collapsing in flames, and Amara Braithwaite was the only one keeping it from burning to the ground. The florist’s van had broken down, half the bouquets hadn’t arrived, the groom’s best man was drunk before noon, and the bride’s mother had just fainted at the sight of the cake leaning dangerously to one side. “Everyone, breathe,” Amara said, calm but firm, as she guided the mother of the bride to a chair. She spoke in the steady tone of a woman who had faced disasters before and learned to hide her panic. “We’re not burying anyone today. We’re celebrating love. Let’s keep it that way.” Her dark eyes swept the ballroom as she barked quiet orders. “You, move that table forward two inches. You, get me bottled water. And you—” she caught the best man trying to sneak another drink, “coffee. Now.” Within minutes, the chaos was smoothing out, as though her voice carried invisible strings and everyone else were puppets. It was her gift. She could create beauty out of madness, order out of noise. And yet, behind her composed mask, Amara felt nothing. Not for this bride, not for her groom, not for any of it. She could choreograph the illusion of love, but she had stopped believing in it years ago. She was adjusting a centerpiece when it happened. An envelope slid under the ballroom door. Plain white. No stamp. No name. Curious, Amara bent down, picked it up, and slipped it into her blazer pocket. She thought no more of it until the rehearsal ended. Only then, when the hall was empty, did she open it. Inside was a single photograph. Her breath caught. It was her sister. Mira. The sister who had vanished nearly two years ago, leaving behind nothing but whispered rumors and a little girl who asks of her every night. In the photo, Mira was smiling, her golden hair tangled by the wind. But it wasn’t Mira’s smile that made Amara’s knees weaken. It was the man beside her. Broad shoulders. Sharp jaw. Cold eyes that seemed to pierce straight through the photograph. Damen Stavros. The billionaire shipping magnate. The most untouchable man in Greece. The man who, according to headlines, had no weaknesses—except perhaps the grave he rarely visited, where his late fiancée rested. On the back of the photo, in bold black letters, were five words: DO NOT SIGN THE PAPERS. What the hell? Papers? What papers? Her heart raced as she stuffed the envelope back into her pocket, scanning the empty ballroom as though someone might be watching. For two years she had searched for Mira. For two years she had raised her sister’s child, little Eleni, as her own. And now this—proof Mira was alive. Proof she had been with Damen Stavros. But why the warning? Before Amara could process it, her phone buzzed. It was her aunt, the only lawyer she trusted. “Amara,” the older woman said, voice sharp, “we need to talk. It’s about Eleni’s custody. There’s a problem.” Amara’s stomach dropped. “What kind of problem?” Her aunt hesitated. “Without your sister, the court is questioning your guardianship. If someone else makes a claim…” “No,” Amara whispered, gripping the phone tighter. “Eleni is mine. I’ve raised her since she was three years old. I won’t lose her.” “Then you’d better prepare yourself,” her aunt warned grimly. “Because someone powerful has already stepped forward.” Amara froze. Her gaze dropped to the photograph in her hand. Damen Stavros stared back at her.
