Whatever do you mean? Why wouldn’t I be here? I heard my husband had a horrific accident. Of course I’m here.” Lady Rivers frowned at Diana.
“You heard?” Diana knew she sounded stupid. It must be the shock. She hadn’t seen her mother since the day she and her father had left for the continent. Her father had begged Diana’s mother to come with them, to just pack up their five-year-old son, her things, and come along for the excitement, for the challenge, for the fun.
Lady Rivers had scoffed and said no. She had responsibilities. If Lord Rivers wasn’t going to see to his, the least she could do was stay and see to them. Diana’s father had shrugged, saying there were solicitors for that, and he was leaving—with Diana. Lady Rivers and Diana’s younger brother, Henry, had stayed.
