Her father had begged Diana’s mother to come with them, to just pack up their five-year-old son, her things, and come along for the excitement, for the challenge, for the fun. Lady Rivers had scoffed and said no. She had responsibilities. If Lord Rivers wasn’t going to see to his, the least she could do was stay and see to them. Diana’s father had shrugged, saying there were solicitors for that, and he was leaving—with Diana. Lady Rivers and Diana’s younger brother, Henry, had stayed.
