Kaira woke up, her head groggy, and pushed the bedclothes off in confusion. She remembered lying in the bath, lightly dozing at times but not really sleeping. Nothing more than that. Yet it seemed at some point she’d got out, dried herself, put some clothes on and climbed back into bed. And she didn’t remember any of it. Maybe the bang on her head had been worse than Tarkus had thought. The effects of the bath were certainly long gone. The bedclothes had been tangled around her in a sweaty mess. She could vaguely remember endless dreams in which she was being chased or hunted. No matter how far she ran, how fast, whatever chased her was always close behind.
