Chapter 05
MHALEE'S POV
Upon arriving at my aunt's employer's house, I was impressed and amazed because it was beautiful and very large. It was clear the owner was wealthy. The houses here were not ordinary because they were located in a subdivision.
"It's so beautiful, Aunt. Your employer is really rich," I couldn't help but tell her.
"They're really wealthy. Plus, the owner's children are already based abroad. They wanted to take Sir Matias, but he refused. He said his life is here in the Philippines. That's why he doesn't want to leave," She explained to me.
"Is that so?" I replied. Then my aunt rang the doorbell. I was still amazed because it was my first time entering such a house.
An elderly woman opened the door.. She seemed to be working with my aunt as well.
"Hi." My aunt greeted the woman, and they exchanged cheek kisses.
"Is she my replacement?" The elderly woman asked my aunt.
"Yes, Sis. This is Mhalee, a friend of my niece." My aunt replied with a smile to the elderly woman. It seemed like she didn't like me because she was showing an unpleasant vibe. If that happened, I definitely wouldn't have a job.
"She's young! Didn't I tell you the job requires someone with experience and not a young lady?" She said angrily to my aunt. She probably thought I was lazy and didn't fit the job because I looked young even though I'm already 24 years old.
"No, sis. She's already old, 24 and married," My aunt reasoned to the elderly woman.
I felt like responding because it seemed like this elderly woman was belittling me. But I just calmed myself and let my aunt do the talking.
"Are you married?" The elderly woman asked. I quickly answered yes, even though it wasn't true.
"Okay, later my employer will talk to you. You'll also find out later if you're accepted or not," She said and then bid us goodbye.
My aunt and I were left outside.
"What's her problem?" I asked.
"Just ignore her. It's because she's old," she said, as we entered the house. I just ignored the elderly woman's sarcasm. If I was amazed by the house's exterior, I was even more impressed by the interior decoration because it was incredibly beautiful.
This is the first time I've entered such a house. This is also my first time working as a helper.
"You should eat in the kitchen first, Zeny. Later, Sir will come down to interview her," the elderly woman said.
My aunt took me to the kitchen while I was still amazed because the house was really beautiful. I also want a house like this for my mother. But I'm poor and uneducated. So, it's just a dream for me.
"Let's eat first so that when Sir talks to you, you've already eaten something," said my aunt with a smile on her face as we arrived in the kitchen. The kitchen was not only very beautiful but also huge, even bigger than our house.
I smiled even more when I saw there was food on the table, and it looked delicious too. I sat down at the dining table. I really needed to eat so that I will not feel weak and will not faint from nerves during my interview with the boss.
I hadn't eaten at home because I left early. While my aunt and I were eating, we chatted. Then the old woman entered the kitchen and said our employer was awake.
"After you finish eating, take her to Sir's office for her interview," she added before leaving.
"Is the old woman really grumpy?" I asked my aunt after she left.
"Just ignore her. She's leaving soon because she wants to retire. It'll just be the two of us left here," she said with a smile, seemingly unaffected by the old woman's grumpiness. It seemed Aunt Zeny was used to it.
I smiled, nodded, and continued eating. My aunt had a point.
After eating, my aunt took me to my employer's office. I was so nervous my heart was pounding loudly.
I didn't know if I would get the job. The old woman's reaction earlier seemed off.
When we reached the door at the bottom of the stairs, Aunt Zeny opened it and let me in.
"Just wait, okay?" she said, so I nodded anxiously as I watched her leave. Then I looked around the office. My employer's office was nice and looked clean with its white color theme.
The office was also quite large and there were many books on the shelves. I sat on the sofa while waiting for my employer.
There was an office table and a swivel chair off to the side. And while waiting for my future employer, I was texting Raven. I didn't know if he had left for work yet.
After a few minutes, the office door opened and my employer came in. I was surprised to see him. Wasn't he supposed to be old?
He didn't look old at all. He still had a strong build. He wasn't hunched over, didn't have gray hair, and walked well. How could he be old? Looking at his physical appearance, he seemed to be just in his 30s.
"Are you Mhalee?" he asked while looking at me intently.
Wow, his voice is so appealing—really masculine.
I thought to myself.
"Ahm, yes sir," I said as I stood up from the sofa. I couldn't meet his gaze because his stare made me uneasy.
"Okay, how old are you?" He asked again as he walked to his desk and sat down.
"24, sir."
"Really?" He asked, sounding skeptical.
"Yes." I replied once more. He nodded while still looking at me. It felt like his gaze was piercing right through me. I felt restless. I was nervous around him.
"Are you married?" He asked again.
"Yes." I quickly answered. I just repeated what Aunt Zeny said. even though it's a lie.
"Hmmm." He remarked, still seeming doubtful about what I said.
"So, how much do you need this job?" He asked me again, still not taking his eyes off me. It felt like I was under interrogation. Is this really how he looks at people? It was as if he was scrutinizing me intensely. But his face was serious.
I took a deep breath, thinking about my mother. She's still in the hospital receiving treatment before she can go home.
"My mother is sick, sir. That's why I need this job." I answered him because that's the truth.
He nodded while looking at me. His intense gaze made me uncomfortable. It felt like his eyes were boring into me.
"Alright, you're hired, but it's a stay-in position," he said after a moment.
"What? I thought it was a stay-out position?" I asked in surprise.
"You need the job, right? You'll be staying in." He replied firmly.
I bit my lower lip and looked away, staying silent. I felt a pang of sadness at the thought of staying in. I had hoped to be with my boyfriend every night. But now I can't because I'll be staying in. I just hope Raven won't be mad. He was hoping I'd have a stay-out job. He wants us to still be together even if I have work and that we can still do our usual activities together.
