Chapter 06 MHALEE'S POV Aunt Zeny greeted me when I came out of my boss's office. "Oh? Why the long face? Were you hired?" "Yes. I'm hired," I replied with a frown. "Well, that's good news. So why do you look sad?" She asked, with a look of confusion on her face. I took a deep breath before answering. "You told me it's a stay out job. Now, I was hired but I need to stay in," I complained to her, pouting. "Oh no!" Aunt Zeny exclaimed in surprise. "I didn't know that. I thought all the helpers here were stay-out." She explained to me. Once again, I let out a deep sigh and pouted at her. Aunt Zeny came closer to me. "Don't worry about it. The important thing is that you have a job now. At least you can pay for your mother's treatment," she tried to calm me down. "What else can I do? I have no choice," I said to her as she pulled me along. She took me to the kitchen, and we saw the old lady cleaning. "What happened?" She asked us sharply when she turned around. This old lady is really grumpy. "Sir said she's staying in." Aunt Zeny answered. "What? Why is she staying in? That's not allowed, right?" She said, seemingly opposed to what our boss said. "The boss said so." I told her. She glared at me before sneering and turning her back on us. I rolled my eyes at the old lady's behavior. It's as if she's the boss, and the way she acts, you'd think she's the one paying the salary. Hmph. Aunt Zeny then took me to my room. It's near the kitchen. "This will be your room. Just tidy it up, it's a bit dirty. No one uses it." Aunt Zeny told me. It really is dirty. Full of dust and cobwebs. It's as if this room has been abandoned. Well, the other helpers are stay-out. I'm the only one made to stay-in, I don't know what's up with that old lady. What's her problem? Earlier, the way she looked at me, you'd think she was going to eat me. I couldn't sit still earlier. It was like she wanted to undress me. She looks serious and decent. But the way she looked at me earlier really bothered me. "What about my clothes? I didn't bring any with me," I said to Aunt Zeny after a while. I didn't bring any because she said it was a stay-out job. Then I found out I was actually staying in. So now I have nothing with me. "Just ask for permission later. Tell them you didn't bring any clothes and you'll return tomorrow." She said. "Okay. I'll just ask for permission later." I said and took a deep breath. Aunt Zeny left me there to clean the room that I was supposed to use. It was unbelievably dirty. I didn't have any extra clothes but I had to clean the room so that I wouldn't have to do it during my first day of work. I started cleaning and kept coughing because of the dust. I cleaned the room thoroughly because it was filthy. I also cleaned the bed. In all fairness, it was soft, unlike our bed at home, which was hard. It didn't have a mattress. After a while, I finished cleaning my room and the bathroom. Both were so filthy, like it hadn't been used for ages. "Are you done?" Aunt asked me when she came to find me. "Yes, it was so filthy!" I replied, shaking my head. "No one ever uses that room; that's why it was in that kind of state. Did you change your bedsheets and pillowcases?" "Yes, I rummaged through the cabinets," I answered. "Alright, let's eat. I'll teach you the tasks here tomorrow," She said, and we went to the kitchen. The cleaning task made me hungry. "Where's the old lady?" I asked Aunt Zeny when I didn't see the old woman in the kitchen. "She's just around. Don't look for her yet," She said, so I didn't ask further. Then we sat at the dining table. Our lunch was delicious today. The food was delicious. We had pork stew and sautéed vegetables. "Our boss? Has he eaten?" I asked Aunt Zeny again. "No, he's at the hardware store. He's not here from morning until afternoon. He comes home at five," Aunt replied as she ate. "Hmm." I murmured. "That's why we have some freedom here since our boss isn't around." She added in a low voice. The grumpy old lady might hear. "Is our boss grumpy, Auntie?" I asked again after a while. "Yes, he is, but he's just quiet. He doesn't ask for a lot of things either. He's not demanding. Just do whatever is asked of you so you won't get scolded or lose your job," she explained to me. I just nodded again. I also noticed that our male boss seemed kind. But he just has a different way of looking at people. I wanted to ask Auntie about it. But I was afraid she might get the wrong idea, so I kept it to myself. After eating, we cleared the table and washed the dishes. Then she showed me the laundry room. "This is the laundry area. You'll do the laundry because you're younger. I'm having a hard time. Then I'll do the ironing," she said with a smile on her face and taught me how to use the automatic washing machine which is something new for me. "There are not many items for washing yet so you can do the laundry tomorrow," she said after a while and pulled me again, somewhere else. She showed me everything I needed to do so I could start seamlessly the following day. After her orientation of the place and the tasks I need to do, we went to the room to rest. "Auntie, do you think I can borrow money from our boss?" I asked her while lying on the bed. "Oh dear, I don't know, Mhalee. You just got hired. Sir Matias might not let you borrow money," she said. I felt sad because my mom didn't have money to buy medicine. She needs to take her medicine to recover. She's suffering from tuberculosis, and it's scary because there's a high mortality rate for that type of disease if untreated. My mom is very precious to me, and I am scared of losing her. I am not ready for that. I took a deep breath and looked at the ceiling. Maybe I'll just borrow money from Raven. He gives me money at times, but in some cases, he is a bit stingy. I just hope he lends me money for my mom's treatment. When evening came, the old woman left. She won't be coming back, and I will be taking over her place. I asked my boss for permission to report to work and stay at his house the following day since I wasn’t prepared and hadn’t brought any of my clothes. "Okay, come back right away," he said in a serious tone. His piercing gaze baffled me. I just ignored it and left. I planned to visit my mother in the hospital before going home. My brother said that Mom will be discharged tomorrow and will just have to take her medication at home for her to recover.
