Chapter 17Breakfast was a soft-boiled egg. Grandmother was proud of her knack for boiling the eggs the exact right amount of time. Soft-boiled meant cooked all the way through with no wet part left, but softer than hardboiled, which was rubbery. They also each got a triangular half-slice of toast and a cup of brown coffee-flavored lukewarm water, except for Chelsea and Garrison, who got skim milk. Grandmother didn’t hold with allowing children to drink coffee, she reminded them every visit. This was the first holiday Pidge had gotten coffee. It wasn’t an improvement.
