Chapter 20They were halfway home, under a damp gray sky, when Pidge yelled, “Stop!” Giant stamped the brake. The car skidded slightly before he brought it to a crooked stop on the packed-earth shoulder. “What’s the matter?” he demanded. Pidge was struggling with his seat belt, fumble-fingered with haste. “There was a doggy by the road.” Giant unbuckled him, saying, “Don’t run, you might scare it.” Pidge flung open his door and stumbled out. They hurried back along the highway, using the cleared roadway since no other headlights were visible. “It was in a pile of leaves,” Pidge said, scanning for the right shapes. “There!” The dog whimpered fearfully as they approached, but didn’t try to run away.
