Chapter 9:
After walking for what seemed like an hour I finally reach home. The place was surrounded by officers. Sirens from an ambulance illuminate the night. I approach the scene with a funny feeling forming in my stomach.
"Whisper!" A familiar voice calls out. My heart is filled with relief when I see her. She opens out her arms. I run to her hugging her tightly. "Thank God!" She sighs. "You scared me. I was worried sick." She confesses frightened. I smile, "I'm okay." I assure. She pulls away. "What on earth happened out there!?" She insists. "We got cut off, I-it's all a blur. I'm sorry". I apologize. She nods. "Yeah, I'm just glad you're alive. I thought I had lost you too." She replies sincerely. I frown. "What do you mean?" I question slowly.
She freezes up realizing what she had said. She rubs her temples then pushes her glasses up to her face. "Whisper." She begins softly her green eyes full of concern. "Spill it out Shelby!" I order desperately, but she couldn't. I storm pass her angrily knowing very well she wasn't going to say anything. "Whisper wait!" She shouts behind me, but I don't listen. I wish I had though.
Entering my home the sight and smell of blood overpower everything else. I halt. My jaw drops as my eyes witness my grandmother laying in an ambulance bed. Lifeless. Still. Tears blur my vision as I slowly walk up to her. My heart crumbles within me. My legs grow weak. My hands grow numb. I stand there for a few minutes trying to process everything.
A gasp escapes my lips. Large claw marks covered her body and face. A beast had torn her apart mercilessly.
"Ms. Armstrong, I'm Detective Peterson. It appears that there has been an attack. We understand that this was your only legal guardian. I'm going to have to ask you a few questions." A voice interrupts.
I knew what the voice was saying, but my mind was spinning so much that I could not comprehend anything that was going on around me. The voice diminished as I stare at her lifeless body. The voice continues, but I can't keep my eyes off her nor bring myself to speak.
What was I going to say?
A nearby medical examiner uses a white sheet to cover her face. "What do you think you are doing!?" I scream before he can cover up her face. Alarmed he makes eye contact with me. "I'm sorry." He apologizes and proceeds. "No!" I command throwing myself at him. He pleads for help as my hands strangle him.
A few strong grips pull me off the medical examiner a few seconds after. I try to pull away and kick, but I could not escape. "You don't understand!" I shout. "She's gone Whisper." The detective pronounces firmly. "No!" I scream in her face. "You don't know what the hell you're talking about! You don't know her like I do." I protest aggressively.
"Nana! Wake up. Wake up, please! We have to talk. Come on." I insist desperately. "Look at what they are doing!" I try to catch her attention. "Look at what they're doing. They're trying to take you away from me. Wake up!" I was screaming so hard that my voice was cracking. "Nana!" I sob. I begin to breathe heavily. "Nana!" I scream with all my strength. I'm sure if there was anyone around they could hear me loud and clear.
"Take her please." The detective orders. They do as told. "No!" I scream trying to pull away from the grips. "I am truly sorry for your lost, but she's gone Whisper. I'll stop by tomorrow to speak about the case and give you information on your grandmother's arrangements. You need some rest, please take care of yourself. We'll be in touch." The Detective explains. My eyes follow my grandmother out, disregarding whatever the detective was saying to me.
When my grandmother was far enough for me to reach they let me go. I drop to the floor and bury my face in my hands. My heart aches and pounds against my chest rapidly. I couldn't describe what was I feeling.
As everyone evacuates my home, Shelby bends down beside me. "I'm so sorry Whisper. I promise you the detectives are going to do everything they can to solve this." She tries to comfort me.
"I'm going to stay here tonight. We'll figure everything out tomorrow." She states. She helps me up. We take our time walking to my room.
~*~
Dear Shelby,
I lost the most important person in my life tonight. She was everything to me. She was everything my parents were not. I need to get away for a while. There are things I need to do and things I need to discover on my own. I must go.
I don't know when I'll be back, which is why I'm writing this to you. I never really claimed you as my bestfriend, but there was no need. You knew what we were and you knew exactly how much you meant to me. You still mean a lot to me. Please take care of my grandmother's arrangements. Take care, and tell Steve to take care of himself as well.
I'm sorry. This is goodbye, for now.
Sincerely, Whisper...
