An irritable boss

1515 Words
When I woke up, the room around me seemed to be engulfed in absolute silence. The rays of light filtering through the window illuminated the bed, empty, the only company being my own body, curled up under the sheets, with a slight pain still marking my legs. I felt uncomfortable and, at the same time, terrified of what had happened the night before. As I looked around, I saw clothes scattered on the floor, a trail of what had happened, but the images from the previous night assaulted me, and they were hard to ignore. My mind tried to block them, to distance myself from those intense memories, but I couldn’t. The face of that man, his intensity, his words… everything repeated like an echo inside me. “I think of his face, but I can’t remember it, damn light that was practically dimly turned off “ I said as I looked around. I sat on the edge of the bed, my body still sore, and wondered what had happened, why I had let myself go like that. What had pushed me to lose myself with a stranger, to do something so impulsive? The guilt wrapped around me like a heavy blanket. Had it been the right decision? Or had it been an act of desperation? I got up from the bed, still staggering from the pain in my body, and began dressing without paying too much attention to what was around me. I just wanted to leave, forget about that night, forget what I had done. I had no idea what to expect, but I needed to put all of that behind me. I bit my lip, repeating the same words over and over in my head. What had I done? How had I gotten to this point? I looked at myself in the mirror, but there was no time to stay there. I had to leave this room, this place that made me remember everything I didn’t want to remember. I left the apartment quickly, without looking back. I just wanted to get out of there, forget everything that had happened. I needed some normalcy, something that would pull me out of this spiral of doubts and mixed emotions. I arrived at the apartment I share with Paulina, my best friend. When I entered, I saw her sitting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee in her hands, as if she had no idea what had happened the night before. “Where were you?“ she asked, raising an eyebrow when she saw me walk in. Paulina’s gaze was curious, but also somewhat worried. “I don’t know what happened… “ I replied, my voice still trembling a little. I really didn’t know what had happened. Everything had been so fast, so unexpected. “It looks like you didn’t sleep at all. You’re pale,” she commented, coming closer to me with an expression that showed something wasn’t right. “What happened to you?” I tried to smile, but the pain from the previous night still lingered on me. I couldn’t hide what I felt. “Something… something crazy” I said, not knowing how to describe what had happened without sounding completely out of place. Paulina watched me for a moment, as if looking for a clue. Then, her eyes went to my neck, and for a moment, I noticed her give a small smile. “Who did this to you?” she asked, pointing at the soft bruises on my skin. I felt embarrassed, but I didn’t want to hide what had happened, even though I still didn’t fully understand it. In the end, I couldn’t help but say it. “A stranger“ I said quietly, straightforward, without embellishments. Paulina let out a nervous laugh, but there was something surprised in her tone. She knew this wasn’t typical of me. I had always been so controlled, so aware of my decisions. And now this… I had done it without thinking. “Really?“ she asked, raising an eyebrow. “With a stranger” I nodded, feeling the shame take over me. I hadn’t regretted it in the conventional sense, but I couldn’t stop wondering if I had made the wrong decision. What had I been looking for in him? Why had I let myself be carried away by that moment? Before Paulina could say anything else, I got up and quickly headed to my room. I didn’t want to talk about it anymore. I needed a break, some time to clear my thoughts. I entered the bathroom and stepped into the shower. I let the hot water envelop me, as if it could erase everything that had happened. “You went crazy, Alondra, but this is something that will never happen again” I told myself as I scrubbed my body with the soapy sponge. After thinking so much and almost going crazy about what I had done the night before, I arrived late that morning. It was something I didn’t like to do. I approached my workplace, trying to be quiet, hoping my presence would go unnoticed. But I didn’t succeed. I could feel the stares, the unspoken questions. I didn’t say anything either, there was nothing I could say. But just then, the office door opened, and a figure appeared in the doorway. He was a tall, imposing man. His presence filled the workspace, and we all stood a little in awe. He wasn’t a model or a client; I knew it as soon as I saw him. He was different. He was the boss, Jeremy Hanks, the man behind this company that had given so much to talk about. I saw the girls’ reactions instantly. Their faces lit up, some even with nervous smiles, as if they were afraid of not measuring up. We all went silent. It seemed like he had been waiting for this moment. “Good morning,” he said in a deep, clear voice, as if his mere word commanded respect. The girls responded in unison, almost automatically.“ Welcome, Mr. Hanks” they said. His eyes scanned the room calmly, but in the end, they stopped. It was as if he was looking for something or someone in particular. I couldn’t stop watching him, but I tried to maintain a neutral posture, not to seem too obvious. But then, I realized I couldn’t stop staring at him, nor did I want to. His elegance, the way he moved, his deep voice… everything about him seemed designed to captivate. When he passed close to me, something happened. It wasn’t an accident, I knew it. Jeremy took a step back. It was so brief that I thought I had imagined the movement, but no. When his eyes met mine, I felt as if time had stopped. A moment where everything around me disappeared. He didn’t look away, and neither could I. We just stood there, staring at each other. He was the one who broke the silence. “And you, what’s your name?” he asked, and his voice was so authoritative that it seemed to reverberate in my chest. I was breathless for a moment, as if I hadn’t expected him to speak to me. Why was he paying attention to me? I wasn’t prepared for this. I tried to regain my composure and, without thinking too much, I responded. “Alondra” I said with a calmness that surprised me. Why did I feel so nervous saying my name? What was it about him that made me feel this way? His gaze was penetrating, as if he was evaluating me, observing every detail. I couldn’t read him, and that unnerved me more than it should. He wasn’t like the other men who came through the office; he wasn’t just attractive or handsome. There was something in his presence that was… different. Jeremy didn’t say anything more. His gaze stayed on me for a few more seconds, but I didn’t see any clear reaction on his face. As if something was happening in his mind that I didn’t understand. Then, without saying another word, he turned around and walked away, heading toward the area that seemed to have been assigned to him. “Wow!” one of the girls said, quickly approaching me”. Did you see that? He’s incredible! Did he talk to you? My throat dried up. I couldn’t answer immediately. Jeremy’s gaze kept lingering in my mind. “Yes, he asked me my name” I replied, trying to sound casual, though my voice came out weaker than I would have liked. “What’s going on, Alondra?” asked Paulina, my friend and coworker. She stared at me with a look of curiosity. “You’re pale, are you okay?” I sighed and forced myself to smile, though I knew it wasn’t convincing. I still felt the pressure of his gaze. “I’m fine, just a little tired” I lied, but the words sounded empty even to me. Paulina didn’t seem convinced, but she didn’t insist.
