Aaron is burdened with guilt after hearing Jane tell him about her life in the orphanage after he left. She didn't have the best of lucks. Or maybe it was Charles’s doing, too. Jane was a very well-behaved, polite kid. It would have been impossible that she didn’t get picked out for adoption along with the other kids her age. Someone must have stopped her from having a good life. She didn’t get the good life she deserves. But Aaron did. In a way, he has stolen Jane’s future and her life. He doesn't have a happy home.
