chapter 1
It was a cold, rainy day in September. The Hanvelses were having dinner in their old, withering home in Scottsdale. "it's been nearly three days now, but the rain just never knows how to quit" exclaimed Mrs Hanvelse as she drank her vegetable stew "Oh dear, how will I get my hair done in this storm". "Mother who gets their hair done at 11 pm?" asked John. "Have you forgotten? there's a twenty per cent discount at Molly's after 11, and you know just how expensive getting your hair your nails, and a facial done can get" waffled Mrs Hanvelse. "Didn't you go last week to get your hair done?" said John, frustrated." Don't think just because you've been put in charge of taking care of the family business that you can question me on every little thing I do; I feel slightly embarrassed when Mrs Smith asks me why I don't enjoy myself regularly" blabbered Mrs Hanvelse. "Now mother in the utmost respect I don't think it's very wise - " I don't think it's very wise for you to tell me what to do" interrupted Mrs Hanvelse. "Why can't you understand mother there just isn't any more money left?". "Oh". Mrs Hanvelse paused. "There seemed to be enough money when you went out last night and bought three beers for yourself," She said disgusted. John pierced his eyes at his mother, speechless. Sitting on the left corner was Mary quietly eating her dinner away - emotionless. Her eyes fell to her plate as she separated the carrots from the peas, a combination she despised. "Mary don't pick at your food, do you not understand how hard this family has to work to get food at this table," Mrs Hanvelse said irritated. Mary bit her lips glaring at her mother almost as if she wanted to scream at her face telling her how selfish and lazy she had always been and instead of earning money she would spend it at the salon. "Lower your gaze this instant lady before I". Mary sighed heavily, continuing her attention on her plate. "Hey, it's alright I'll eat your peas" John smiled. "Absolutely not she needs to learn to finish everything on her plate whether she likes it or not you will not spoil her" her wrinkled skin frowned. "They're just peas mother whats the big deal".Mary silently finished her peas while the dispute of her mother and brother carried on disastrously. Apathetically, John tucked his chair under the table and grabbed his coat heading for the door." How dare you walk away from me when I'm talking to you" shouted Mrs Hanvelse. Mary sighed calmly, tucked her chair, walked into the kitchen, then went upstairs for bed. It was a typical Tuesday and fights like these often did not affect the poor girl; after all, it became a tradition to her. It was nine-thirty, the time at which Mary had been ordered to be in bed. She brushed through her brunette curls one by one then applied a serum onto her hands softly, moisturising her dry elbows, gazing upon her bedroom wall, waiting to get out of this horrid place.
