Blair’s POV
I couldn’t stop crying, no matter how much I tried. Slone had looked like a shadow of himself, and that coldness in his eyes… I couldn’t recognize him. He had almost strangled me to death, a complete opposite of the man I once knew.
The door to the room opened, but I didn’t look up, too distracted with my thoughts.
“Are you okay?” Lydia’s familiar voice reached my ears, and I looked up at her, my cheeks stained with tears.
I shook my head as I slid down from the bed. “I need to leave the hospital today.”
She stared at me, shocked, and I pulled her hand closer. “Lydia, please, look, he will kill me if he finds out I lied about the baby dying. I need to go.”
At the mention of the word ‘baby,’ she looked around, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the empty baby bed beside mine and frowned. “Where is Nikolai?” she asked, and an invisible hand squeezed my heart.
“He took him away from me.”
Her eyes widened as she realized what I was saying, but just as she opened her mouth to speak, I shook my head.
“It doesn’t matter; my child will be safe with him, but please, I need to leave.” I could vouch for Slone that he’d never hurt his child. He had a grudge against me, but his child he’d protect with his life.
“Are you sure that’s wise? He is the Alpha, and he can find you anywhere you go.”
I thought about it for a while and shrugged. “Maybe, but I have to try.”
She sighed and eyed me for a while. “Okay, I will see what I can do.”
I thanked her profusely, and she hugged me. I cried in her arms for a while, a feeling of loss washing over me.
“I warned him about you.”
Startled, Lydia staggered, and I almost fell on my face, but she quickly caught my arm to steady me as we both turned to the door where Stella was standing, with her arms crossed in front of her.
“Get out,” she barked, glaring at Lydia, and Lydia narrowed her eyes, her hands on her hips. “Are you deaf?”
Knowing she could go to Slone with lies, I sighed and tugged on Lydia’s gown, my eyes pleading with her.
She eyed Stella one more time before brushing past her and walking out of the room.
Stella scoffed as she watched Lydia go but then turned to me again, her lips curled up in a smirk now. “You know, this was all too easy,” she said suddenly, and I frowned.
“What are you talking about?” my heart was beating wildly in my chest now as a feeling of unease settled at the pit of my stomach.
She slowly made her way towards me, her heels clicking against the tiles with every step. “All this wouldn’t have been possible if you hadn’t been so nice from the beginning.”
I opened my mouth to ask again, but she continued talking.
“Slone has always wanted a mate,” she whispered, bitterness dripping from every word. “When he finally found you two years ago, he was ecstatic and came running home with you.”
“What did you do?” I asked her, glaring at her bitterly. “Stella, I swear….”
“Hush, Blair, no one would believe you.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked up at her. “Did you poison……?”
“I had no choice; there was no other way to get rid of you,” she said so lightly, anger burned in my veins.
“You’re a monster.” She chuckled, the sound dark and scary.
She got serious again as she grabbed my wrists. “You are just as bad, coming in and stealing Slone from me.” Her eyes were wide and dark. “You don’t deserve to be with him, and he has finally seen it. I have always been there with him, at every turn, so why do you think you should be the one to end up with him?”
I choked back sobs and snatched my hand back, tears rolling down my cheeks uncontrollably. My ears were ringing, and my heart had stopped beating. “Why can’t you wait for your own mate? Surely you have dreamed of being with him.”
Stella scoffed and started walking towards the door again. “He is a good-for-nothing. I need power and status, and that poor powerless rogue can’t give me any of that, so I got rid of him.”
I froze and stared at her blankly. “You need to be stopped,” I whispered, rising to my feet, but she was suddenly holding me by the neck in a tight grip.
“You will do no such thing, or else I will kill your little bastard.”
My eyes widened, and I struggled to break free, but she was stronger. “I will destroy you if you try it.”
She only laughed and released me finally. I crumbled to the floor, and she sneered, leaning down. She spat on me and laughed again. “You are too weak to do anything to me.”
She turned and walked out of the room, leaving behind chills and tension. I sat there motionless, staring at nothing as her words swirled in my mind. Nikolai couldn’t be in the same house as her; I had to get him away from her at all costs.
The door burst open just then, and Lydia ran towards me. “What happened?” her voice was slightly raised.
I sat there for a few more minutes unmoving. Then I raised my head and stared at her, my expression blank. “I have to see my son,” I whispered to Lydia, who was crouched beside me, and she nodded, helping me to my feet. “Take me to the Packhouse.”
“It’s going to be okay,” she whispered, but I didn’t reply, just focused on my walking. I had to get to my son no matter what. Stella was a monster, and he wouldn’t be safe with her.
“You should tell him the truth,” Lydia said some minutes later after I told her everything, but I shook my head.
“I need to save my son.”
