Chapter 1
The Awakening The town of Blackwood was old. Its history stretched back hundreds of years, built on the bones of forgotten settlements and overgrown trails. Nestled at the edge of a dense forest, it was a town defined by its isolation, where people lived quiet, uneventful lives. Ethan Ward, a lifelong resident, enjoyed the quiet. He had always been a man of routine: getting up, going to work, coming home. He was the kind of person who found solace in stability, even if it meant his life could feel small, even uneventful. A middle-school teacher, he spent his days trying to inspire his students, though he himself had long given up on the idea that adventure would ever find him. He was 34 now, single, and lived alone in a modest house that he had inherited from his parents, who had passed away when he was young. But in the night, everything changed. He felt restless. It had been a long week, with a parent-teacher meeting going awry and loneliness gnawing at him more than usual. On a whim, Ethan decided to go for a walk in the forest. It was something he hadn’t done in years. The forest had always intrigued him as a child, but his parents had warned him to stay away. Too many strange disappearances, they had said. There are so many dark legends surrounding the place. The moon hung low in the sky, a swollen red orb, unnaturally large. He didn’t notice at first, his thoughts preoccupied. The trees loomed overhead, branches like skeletal hands reaching toward the stars. The deeper he walked, the more he felt something wasn’t quite right. There was a palpable tension in the air, a silence that seemed too deliberate. A twig snapped behind him. Ethan froze, his heart thumping in his chest. Slowly, he turned, scanning the forest. Nothing. Just darkness. But he couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. He quickened his pace, the fog thickening as he went deeper into the woods, his breath visible in the cold night air. He told himself to turn back, but something, a curiosity, perhaps, drew him forward. Then came the growl. Low and guttural, it resonated through the trees. Ethan’s blood ran cold as he realized it was not the sound of any animal he recognized. He took a step back, his pulse racing. From the shadows emerged a pair of golden eyes, glowing with intelligence that sent a wave of primal fear through him. It was then that the creature stepped into view. It was massive, easily seven feet tall, standing on two legs. A werewolf. Ethan had heard the legends, of course, but he’d always thought they were just stories to keep people away from the woods. The creature’s fur was black as the night, and its sharp teeth gleamed in the moonlight. For a moment, Ethan was paralyzed with fear. Then it lunged. Pain exploded in his shoulder as the beast’s jaws clamped down, sending fire through his veins. Ethan screamed, thrashing against the creature, but it was too strong. As his vision blurred, he heard a voice, not spoken aloud but echoing in his mind: You are now one of us.
