The princess. Like THE princess. The one who is meeting her fiance tonight... the next Lycan queen is my mate! Was my luck seriously that bad... Why would the moon goddess make my mate someone I couldn't have? I swore to myself that I would only ever love my mate and now I knew that I would never be allowed to. Worse than that, I hurt her. I could see it in her eyes as I spoke but I couldn't stop myself.
'You're an i***t,' Raven growled at me as we watched Lilly race back to her cousins. I could recognize all of their scents from the night before. Especially the male that wrapped my mate in his arms. 'You let him touch her again!'
'She isn't ours Raven!' Growling, I turned away from the scene and retreated to the kitchen.
'Well, not now! You basically called her a b***h who played with your heart.'
'I didn't say that! Even if I did, it's not wrong! This is her freaking engagement party.'
'Did you see how she looked at you before you looked like you got hit by a car! She was filled with joy... that's not the face of someone who chose to be engaged to another.'
'She met us last night. You don't know she didn't choose this!' I snapped, closing the mindlink. I know he's right. I do. I'm not blind. The hurt I saw in her eyes only proves his point. However, I can't help myself from feeling like I got robbed of something that was supposed to be mine. I wanted to live a quiet life... eventually leaving the castle, moving to a small village and opening a small bistro with my mate. In one moment, all of those dreams were shattered and I took it out on the last person I should take it out on. My mate.
"What the hell was that!" groaning, I turned around to see my taste tester looking angrier than ever before. "Why the hell did my sister just run off in tears, and why were you a total douche to her!"
"I just told her the truth!" I snapped, my eyes glowing red. The air in the kitchen became heavier and all of my waiters and waitresses ran from the room. London, on the other hand, stood her ground.
"Okay, explain to me what the truth is then. Because I really don't want to go drill my sister when she's already in tears."
Frowning, I thought about not telling London. She was a young child and she didn't need to deal with the troubles of adults. However, she was the only person who could possibly bridge a gap between Lilly and I. Sighing softly, I lifted myself onto the Island and told London about what had happened the night before. Not the kiss and wanting to claim my mate, but the other more age-appropriate stuff.
"So you are her mate?" London asked slowly as she looked at me.
"I can't be," Sighing softly, I turned away from her and started to work on dishing out the next set of food.
"That isn't what I asked!" Londown growled, clearly upset.
"Well, that is the answer that I have!" Turning around, I looked at her. "Do you know what this party is for? Do you know what you are asking me to do?"
"I am asking you to tell me about you and my sister."
"THERE IS NO US!" I snapped, my eyes glowing red. London frowned, backing away from me as I tried to calm down. "Why is it so wrong that I do not want to watch part of my soul waltz around a room and pick a groom? Why is it so wrong that I want to be in my safe place instead of having to smile and bid her farewell?"
"Why do you have to bid her farewell?" London whispered sadly.
Smiling sadly, I looked out of the kitchen towards the ball room where I saw Lilly dancing with her father. "I may not have met any of the royal family, but I have actually met your father before. Do you think he is the kind that would want a lowly chef as his successor?" Slowly, I looked at London and saw in her eyes that she understood. "I always said that if I couldn't be with my mate then I would wish her farewell and allow her to be happy."
"But... how can she be happy without her mate?"
"In London we only met for one night. She will know her husband for life. She will be happy."
"And if she's not?"
"I cannot change my status, London." Smiling sadly, I kissed her forehead. "I want to spend the remainder of the night in my kitchen... pretending that what is happening in the ball room isn't happening. Please respect that."
"I think you are an i***t," London grumbled but nodded. "I will do as you ask."
