~Lilly~
"Cam, are you sure about this... I mean my father has never let me out to run." I liked having some freedom but I was a little afraid of him making me regret it by locking me away again.
"Your training officially starts tomorrow. Even if he doesn't force you into confinement, it is inevitable with all of the learning you will go through. Trust me, the amount I had to learn as future Alpha was intense and I am not going to be king." Cam sighed saddly. "Honestly if Terra and I were not mates and counterparts, I don't think she would have stuck around."
"Don't say that, she loves you." I looked at my friend in shock.
"It isn't easy to be with someone who is going to become the leader of their domain," Cam answered honestly.
"You never made it seem like it was hard..."
"Why make everyone suffer with me? Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled to be the next Alpha and I love being a leader. However, it isn't all sunshine and roses, as you well know."
"Have you told the others? We could help you..."
"Lilly, you are the oldest of your siblings. Do you think the twins or London would understand your amount of stress?" Sighing, I shook my head, understanding exactly what he meant. "Only those that are going to be Alpha or queen can understand what that responsibility feels like. Be free tonight and take advantage of that opportunity."
Smilling softly, I took a deep breath, taking in the scent of the midnight air and the river nearby. "There's a river?" I squealed excitedly.
"Why don't we make that our destination?" Cam smirked as he began to strip off his clothes.
Squeeling, I turned away quickly. I know that most wolves are used to nudity, but since I have been locked away in the castle my whole life, I wasn't used to it. "Can you turn away from me when I shift?" A howl sounded behind me, causing me to turn around. Before me stood a large silver wolf with red eyes. "Are you Cam's wolf?" The wolf bowed softly before turning away from me to give me the privacy I had asked for.
Smiling softly, I began to strip my clothes, 'Are you ready, Zion?'
'More than ready!' Zion howled happily as she forced her way forward and I felt every muscle in my body set on fire. It felt as if my joints were being ripped and torn apart only to be stitched back together in another order. Groaning, I tried to steady myself, only to find that I was no longer on two feet. Frowning, I looked at my paws and saw two blonde, almost white paws. Frowning, I turned to try and look at myself, only to find that I was literally chasing my own tail.
'You won't be able to see yourself like that,' a strange voice spoke to me, making Zion jump. 'You are a skittish wolf, aren't you,' the wolf howled with laughter.
'Cam?' I asked as we looked at the wolf.
'My name is Carver,' The wolf smiled softly at us.
"He is my wolf," Cam said proudly as he entered my mindspace.
"How are you here?" I asked as Zion and Carver took off for the river, chasing one another like children.
"This is what a pack link is like. We can talk to one another without others knowing." Cam smiled as Zion jumped on Carver. "Now that you have finally shifted you will be able to connect with others in your pack."
"But we are not of the same pack... so how does this work?"
"Well, there are two reasons. The easiest thing is that we are family. Our families are bonded with one another, so no matter what pack we claim we are one. That is why Aunt Calypso can still talk to my mom even though they are no longer technically in the same pack."
"Okay... that sounds like a made-up answer, so what is the other option?"
Cam laughed, shaking his head, "You really are hard to please princess."
"Don't call me that," I growled in annoyance.
"Yeah, yeah yeah." Cam sighed as Zion and Carver reached the pond river and Zion took less than two seconds to think before jumping head first into the lake. "You are the Lycan princess. You will not only be in control of your kingdom, but also all wolf packs in the states. The Lycan King and queen over see all of us to keep peace and order."
"But... so I'm supposed to be in charge of every wolf pack in the states!" Panic began to take me over as I thought about the fact that I was not only taking over my kingdom but also the rest of the country! My father had never told me that my reach would be that great.
"Breath Lilly." Cam said, worried as he grabbed my shoulders and walked me through my panic attack. "Take all of this one step at a time. By the time you take over, you will be used to the control you have."
"I DON'T WANT THE CONTROL!" I snapped at my cousin. Gasping, I covered my mouth, not happy that I had said that.
"What?" Cam frowned, looking at me. "You don't want to take over the kingdom from your father? I thought that you were looking forward to the freedom."
"That isn't freedom Cam." I sighed softly. "In a normal pack you train and experience life with your people. You are one of them and you protect them. Here my father is a lot like me. He lives in that office and only leaves when he has to go visit packs. Now I know that those visits are also work. I do not want to trade a cage for a cage. I have no desire to be queen."
"Then what will you do? How will you tell your father?"
"I'm not going to," I smiled sadly as Zion climbed out of the river and shook herself dry. "This is my destiny, Cam. I am going to take it on head first and deal with it."
"Destiny isn't everything," Cam reminded me. "If it was, then my mother would have stayed with my abuser and you would have died in that dungeon."
"Then what are mates? If destiny is not everything, then why can we not resist our mate bonds?"
"Because we chose not to," Cam smiled softly, probably thinking about Terra and their unborn child. "I chose to believe in my bond and it led me to where I am. My mother chose to destroy hers instantly and it saved her." Cam nodded his head towards the river. A midnight black, almost blue wolf emerged from the woods. The scent of cookies and cream filled the night air and I knew instantly that it was my mate. "Your life is yours and yours alone Lilly. These are choices that no one can make for you."
I opened my mouth to say something but Cam just smiled at me and left the mindspace. I watched as Carver bowed to the wolf and moved to the tree line. He was still visible and watching us, but it was clear that he was giving Zion and the wolf some time alone. My mindspace began to fill with the now all-too familiar scent and panic began to fill me thinking about him invading my mind. Frantically, I looked around for my mate. "Your wolf is beautiful," his voice said softly as he moved from the shadows to stand before me.
