Theresa POV
You might all have heard of the stories where a girl gets a dare to walk alone in a graveyard at night while wearing a wedding dress. Let me tell you, a person's imagination has no control, especially over girls. She would make the scene where a ghost would come out, or the girl wearing the wedding dress might meet with some blood-sucking vampire that would marry her and make her his source of food. That's not all, some young girls having wild fantasies also think that these vampires or ghosts will make them their mates and they will live happily ever after.
Well, I don't believe in this kind of s**t, I don't believe that vampires, ghosts, werewolves, witches, or even fairies exist in this world. I believe that these are all fantasy characters created by humans to fulfill their wild fantasies of meeting a perfect prince charming. So here I was on my way to prove all those girls wrong and to make them believe in reality.
I was walking alone in the heart of the forest with only a torch in my hands which was being used to light up my path. Dark, tall trees surrounded me, plus the twigs on the ground were making my path extremely difficult, as the white net of my bridal dress would get stuck in the sharp edges of them. It was laborious to walk with a bridal dress on a flat and smooth surface, not to mention, I was half walking and half jumping over the forest.
I could hear the clear voices of night animals, they were making sure to remind me continuously that I was not alone in the wild. I jumped over another large piece of fallen tree while being careful that I might not sprain my feet because, even if I did so, no one would come to my rescue, until the morning. I aimed to find a clearing, with a small hut, which I remembered was nearby to the place where I was walking, and to spend the night there.
If it was morning, I would have easily found it, as its map was at the back of my hand's hand, but as it was night, not an ordinary night but the night of a full-blood moon, I was having difficulty in searching for that place.
I was cursing myself. That is why I accepted the dare and decided to walk alone in this forest. It's not that I was scared, but me being the lazy me, was finding it uncomfortable to cover the distance in the huge white dress. I just didn't understand why the dare had to involve the bridal dress.
I decided to take a break and analyze my surroundings while leaning against a tree. It was already so late at night, I just didn't wanna get lost and spend the night on the dirty ground.
My gaze went above the sky. The full-blood moon was looking majestic and a bit scary. It was as if it was ruling the sky and the soft red glow spread all over the treetops. The blood moon reminded me of the exact reason why I was in the forest. My friends always believed in werewolves and the mating concepts, no matter how much proof I provide them with, that this is all fantasy and a distraction from the real world, they just won't listen to me.
Our city was located at the edge of this enormous and widespread forest. Rumors say that werewolves live in the heart of this forest, which, of course, I don't believe because I, along with my friends, had been to this place thousands of times for a picnic but never confronted a wolf not to mention a werewolf.
So one night, at a casual gathering, we all heard that it was gonna be blood moon night in a few days, and according to the werewolf concept, it was a night of their mating. So, a long story in short words, my friends dared me to walk in the heart of the forest on that night to prove them wrong, while me, being a fighter, accepted the challenge.
I decided that I had taken enough breaks and I should keep moving to reach the hut as I didn't wanna spend more time in the forest which gave me creepy vibes by every passing second. Suddenly, my breath got knocked out of me and my heart almost stopped beating when I felt a slight weight on my right shoulder. I slowly turned my gaze to my shoulder to see a plastic shopping bag fall at me from above the tree.
"Who the f**k, put the bag there!!" I wanted to scream but controlled myself and increased my pace to the clearing. I soon saw a large wooden board indicating that the hut was near ahead. I took a breath of relief that I managed to make it this far. Just as I was about to take another step, I felt the ground vibrating.
"Is it an earthquake?" I mumbled while sitting down and putting my hand on the ground. My eyes widened when I realized that it was not. According to the training that I got during my university course in forest survival ways, I would have said without a doubt that a huge cluster or pack of animals were running this way and they were moving at a very fast pace.
I knew that they were nearby and I wouldn't reach the hut in time even if I wanted to so the first and the last idea that crossed my mind was to hide fast from them.
"As long as they don't see me, they won't be a threat to my existence" I muttered to calm myself while hiding behind a large tree that was nearby.
My heartbeat accelerated and I tried to control my shivering body. I didn't understand why luck was never on my side. On normal nights, who feels like a pack of animals at night. But it was as if they knew that I was gonna come tonight and they decided to add thrill to my "night in the wild" experience.
I could feel that they were closing up and were nearby. After a minute or two in fear and stress, I decided to poke my head out and look at the forest because the ground stopped vibrating. According to my analysis, they should have passed from this place, a minute before, but I felt saw no group of animals. It was as if they changed their direction. I took a quick look over the forest again and double-checked if I could feel the arrival of animals but felt none, so I decided to walk out of my hiding space and resume my journey so that I can reach a safe place.
As soon as I took a few steps out, I felt burning holes in my back. It was just like a creepy feeling, as if I was being watched. I looked behind but saw no one. I tried to ignore the feeling but it was making each step heavy.
I stopped, took a long breath, and tried to ease my body. To ease my mind I took another look behind me.
"Look Thresa, there is no one behind you, so calm……………….." My words got stuck in my throat when I suddenly saw a sea of sparkling eyes in the dark shadows of the forest.
My hand instantly covered my mouth to muffle the scream that was urging me to escape from my mouth. I could feel all of their eyes fixed on me. Without a doubt, I was their target. I wanted to run but my feet froze on the ground. My hands and legs were shivering uncontrollably. Death was in front of me but I didn't wanna die at such a young age. I had many dreams ahead. I wanted to finish my university degree and open a boutique. I wanted to earn money to live a good life. I wanted to roam the world.
My eyes zoomed in the dark to find out what animals were they. The sudden howling voice confirmed my guess. They were a pack of wolves. Rumors said that this area had the wildest wolves but most of the people had never seen them so we considered it as a baseless rumor. I knew that I stood no chance against them all but I was not willing to give up my life so easily. I muttered up the courage to make a run, it was as if on cue a big black wolf jumped out of the shadows.
This time my scream wasn't stopped by my hand, instead I could assure you all that it must have been heard by half of the forest. I had seen a lot of wolves on the discovery channel at home, in the textbooks, and on the internet but I had never seen such a large wolf as that one. His red eyes were constantly fixed on me. All of the colors must have evaporated off my face.
He was standing still, right in front of me as if he was daring me to make a move and it would shred me in pieces. Within a swift move, I grabbed a long twig that was near my feat.
"Please don't come near me, I swear I will not harm you as long as you will not harm me" I pointed the twig at him.
The wolf turned his head as if it was mocking me, even though I wanted to laugh at myself for such a lame threat. I tried to take a step back while keeping the twig in front of me but that wolf made me halt in my steps when he took a step forward and howled while facing the big blood moon. Other wolves in the shadows howled after him. It was as if he was marking his prey as if he was telling his other fellow wolves that only he could eat me.
"I know, I know, you want to kill me, but let me tell you, I don't have much meat on me. Look, I am so slim and smart, and I promise that I am not delicious" I tried to make a lame attempt at talking some words into his head with actions.
His patience seemed to run out, he started walking towards me, I didn't know what else to do, so I ran, I ran as fast as I could for my life. I didn't know which direction I was running into or in what things, I was bumping into. I only had one thing on my mind, which was to survive.
I could feel him running behind me and he was not alone, other wolves were also with him. As expected, within a few moments, I found myself surrounded by those wolves. They formed a circle around me, leaving me with no way to escape. Suddenly, the circle opened up and that big black wolf walked in, he took slow steps toward me, and at the same time, I took those steps backward. I stopped when there was only two step distance between me and the big brown wolf behind me. He snarled at me showing his canines.
I looked ahead to see that the black wolf hasn't stopped moving towards me. His every step put me close to my death.
"Won't you even ask me my last wish before my death?" I snapped at the black wolf with red eyes. His steps at once came to a halt upon my sudden outburst.
"My last wish is that you all die so that I can live" Within a swift move, I put the touch that was in my hands, very close to the eyes of the brown wolf behind me. My sudden move took him off guard and I made a run for my life again.
This time, I wasn't surrounded by wolves, but those wolves directly lunged at me. I screamed in terror and pain when a wolf pushed me to the ground and another wolf sank his teeth into my arm. My head felt heavy due to the hard fall, and pain spread throughout my body. I knew that these were my last moments on the earth. My vision became blurry due to the tears in my eyes. Though this was not the death I wanted, I was contented with the fact that I learned a huge secret on this earth before my death.
During my last moments, with my blurry vision, I saw that big black wolf shift into a human. So yes, I was wrong my entire life. Werewolves do exist in the world. The only regret that I had was that I couldn't see his human form before falling into the sea of darkness.
