ARE YOU MY ONE PERCENT?
Up(CHAPTER 1)
"Hey, catch her!"
The goons yelled vigorously while chasing the timid seventeen-year-old Yu Yan down the dark street of Hangzhou, the wind causing her ponytail hair to bounce behind her. How she vividly got herself into this mess, she couldn't remember and losing sight of them felt almost too impossible like they had studied her every track and knew exactly which route she was going to take.
"There's no escaping, you better stop if you don't want double the consequences!" One of the goons drastically warned but Yu Yan never turned back to look at them, acting ignorant like she didn't hear a word he just said, although her breathing was unsteady, she found herself still being able to run and thought surprisingly how easy fear can make one do what they've felt was impossible.
The street was lonely and equally as silent as a grave yard, she doubts anyone would hear her if she makes an attempt to scream.
Stopping at her tracks and prostrating over with both hands on her knees, she tried to catch her uneven breath, glancing around the corner for a safe hiding spot. Luckily, her keen sight spotted a garbage truck which she wasted no time hiding behind, taking a sharp inward breath while forcing herself to stay calm as the footsteps suddenly stopped close to the truck.
"Dang it! Where did she go?!" One of the men raged while Yu Yan remained hidden behind the truck, the annoyance in the man's tone frightened her, she dared not make a sound. If they somehow manage to get their hands on her, they definitely won't spare her.
"Hey you, check the main street if you spot her there, the rest of you, search the whole place."
Yu Yan absent mindedly bit on her nails and could hear the sound of her heartbeat ringing in her ear and the warning signs clouding her thoughts, she heard a light footstep approaching where she hid and cautiously moved away from there before she gets spotted and in her retreat to get away from the incoming footsteps, she ended up bumping into one of the goons while trying to hide from the other.
Just when she thought the situation couldn't get any worse, she was surrounded by them and was trapped in their middle, looking like a helpless little bird.
Yu Yan never expected to be caught so soon and they smiled wickedly at her, rolling a bat they held in their hands as if it was some toy.
"We warned you, now let us show you how we deal with those who refused to heed our words." His tongue was as viscous making Yu Yan flinch away from him, totally outnumbered at this point, how will she escape now? clutching tightly onto her school bag, her big starry-brown eyes darted a quick glance between them but unfortunately they made sure there wasn't any escape route for her and feeling completely helpless, she should at least question them.
"What do you want from me?!" She swallowed her fears and it took every tight clenching of her fist for those words to escape her trembling lips.
"You don't know?" One of the goons smirked and slowly began moving towards her causing Yu Yan to loose her balance as she tried to retreat and fell on her butt.
"After today, you'll know exactly what you did!" The tone of his voice was uncanny and filled with bitter words. Yu Yan already knew this was going to be her last day on earth cause she had 0% chance of escaping, cursing school for making her walk so late at night, there was so much she still planned on doing, they can't do this to her.
"But I have the right to know what it is you want from me, is it ransom, what? Just say it." Since they clearly aren't going to spare her, she wasn't going to hold back her words either but it seemed her sudden courage aggravated the man.
"You..!" Yu Yan had already looked away the moment she sensed a hit coming, blocking her face with her hands, expecting the terrible pain that was going to land on her, silently wishing her loved one's goodbye but it felt like the whole place had gone still and the hit she was expecting never came.
Slowly detaching her hands from her face, the goon already had his bat ready to strike her with it but a hand had stopped him mid air. The goons face immediately turned ashen as he gazed at the person who caught his hand.
"I'm not a good person, but hitting a lady is out of one's league."
His tone was calm but yet, the dreadful sensation lingering in those words made the bat fall from the goon's hand and a painful yelp escaped from his throat as his wrist were brutally twisted. Yu Yan couldn't help but flinch as she heard the cracking of bones and the man's painful yelp justified whose wrist got broken.
The rest of the goons immediately scurried away, leaving their leader to face the wrath alone. His wrist was finally freed and he slumped on the floor while the stranger casually walked up to the frightened Yu Yan who went still and suddenly found it difficult to move. She couldn't see who he was due to how dark the night was but she could make out his lean physique and perfect profile she knew he could come out as an attractive stranger and every walking step of his as he strode up to her emphasized powerful aura and a magnetic elegance as he shoved a hand into his trouser pocket staring down at her with a cold gaze she swallowed hard.
"You know what I would do in this case if I were you?" He asked, leaving the frightened Yu Yan confused.
"Run."
It sounded more like he was giving her a chance to escape and without a second thought, Yu Yan clumsily got to her feet and without turning back, took to her heels once more and only had the hopes of getting back home, not glancing once at the stranger who had saved her.
He watched her run all the way till she was out of sight. Turning his attention to the wounded goon on the ground with a blood lusty gaze, he raised the terrified goon up, slamming him against the wall, choking the life out of him but his calm expression was enough to tell he wasn't even trying, the goon struggled with all his might to free himself.
"L...let me go!"
But the stranger smirked devilishly, his optic gradually turned from black to a bloody red, revealing his fangs as he smirked, emitting a horrifying look from his victim.
"Sure."
In the lonely dark street, a terrifying scream of agony followed next.
He took a quick glance at his watch before heading back to a Porsche car that awaited him at a corner.
He opened it up and took a seat at the back, his face creased into one who was lost in thoughts. That girl….she has to be the one, he sensed it and his instinct could never lie on him like that.
With just a snap of his finger, a man in black suit showed up at his window with his head bowed.
"You called for me young master?" he politely said but this Young Master hardly paid attention to him and got straight to the point.
"Did you see the girl I just saved?" He asked while the man in black nodded in response to his words.
"Find out everything you can about her, all the information you can get about that girl within tonight."
Getting all the information in one night would be a bit difficult but there was absolutely noway he could say that to his young boss, it's like a suicide mission he wasn't ready to take yet and could only nod in response.
"Yes young master."
With just a wave of his hand, the man was gone and the driver didn't need to ask for him to know when it was time to start driving but he couldn't help but wonder as he stole a glance through the mirror to gaze at his master. What could he possibly be up to?
(CHAPTER 2)
The early morning sun was just starting to sink in, a beautiful, mindless breeze, the cloudless sun.
Don't be deceived people! It's usually sunny and rainy during July to September and it's about to mark the end of the plum rain season.
Riding on her bicycle, Yu Yan took her time to scrutinize the peaceful road of Hangzhou, feeling it's warm natural breeze fluttering her ponytail hair.
She just finished delivering some pastries to a neighbor around the corner and was heading back home when a thought suddenly crossed her mind, earning an unpleasant look on her glowing pale face as her slim brows wrinkled slightly.
"Kang Joon promised to help me service some pastries today but just like Ying Yue he's a betrayal, I need to start thinking of getting new friends." She ranted non stop to herself, puffing her cheeks childishly as a display of annoyance when her phone vibrated in her short jeans pocket.
"I hope it's Kang Joon, I need to trash my annoyance on someone today." She reached for her phone in her pocket while the other hands controlled the handlebars of her bicycle, glancing thoroughly at her phone, she kept her gaze unattended to the road and the sudden horn of a car caught her attention.
Her eyes widened perilously seeing a car head her way and it felt her brain stopped functioning at the sight. Without thinking, she jumped out of her bicycle with a little high pitch scream, landing on a safer side of the road but it had consequences as she rolled all the way to the end, feeling the hard floor on her delicate skin but luckily, no damage was done.
The car immediately came to an abrupt stop, her bicycle slamming into it and crushing one of it's headlights.
She tilted her head up only to witness the damage her bicycle had caused, a shocking gasp escape from her lips, envisioning the trouble that had already transpired on her, what'll she do now??
Getting up to her two feet and dusting herself up, she slowly approached the car taking note of the damage her bicycle had decided to place on her head, she could have just run and escaped the trouble she was getting herself into but at the same time, running away would have made the situation even worse so why not face it instead.
The door slid open and a middle aged man stepped out with a half stunned expression as he grimaced over the car.
"Miss, you've damaged the car!" He sternly said to the timid Yu Yan who could barely even speak, there was only a little scratch and a broken headlight, it's not like she bombed the car or something but she didn't dare utter those words and bowed her head in apology, to avoid the man's angry gaze.
"I'm sorry, really sorry."
"Your sorry won't fix the scratches and headlights on the car!" He added with a hint of dismay while Yu Yan didn't know what exactly to do, perplexed by the whole situation.
"I...I didn't mean to run into your car, it was...I didn't notice."
"Children of today's generation, what would have happened to you if you didn't jump out on time, you were so busy on your phone you forgot the important thing."
Yu Yan bit her lower lip as he continued to scold her.
"If the call was so urgent, why didn't you park somewhere before answering??"
She couldn't help but feel guilty this time around as he spoke some sense into her while she continued to bow her head.
"I'm really sorry, how much is the damage?" She proceeded to ask because the discussion would obviously lead there.
"Damages?"
A deep cello voice caught her attention and she raised her small head up to see a young fellow casually step out of from the backseat of the car, he had a dark mask on which almost covered his entire face but left his fathomless crystal-black eyes visible, enough to entice anyone who dared to stare for too long.
The middle aged man suddenly rushed towards him, bowing his head in respect.
"Young master, you could have called me If you needed anything, I'm already handling the situation." He stated politely but his young master dismissed him instead and walked to the timid Yu Yan who took a step back from him. He wore a dark hoodie along with the long pants, a strand of his raven black hair falling seductively on his face, if he actually wore a disguise to hide how imposing he looked, it definitely wasn't working.
He snapped a finger at her face bringing her back to earth and facing the predicament she unfortunately found herself in.
"I...I'm sorry for…" she stammered, something about him and his intimidating aura made her think twice before opening her mouth to speak as he examined the car himself, leaning against it.
"Wha...what are you doing?" Being a chatterbox herself, it was impossible for her to keep shut.
"Calculating your money." He stated in an obvious manner, not shifting his somber gaze from the car itself while Yu Yan was starting to regret not running away when she had the chance, he suddenly tsked turning his icy gaze towards the already alarmed Yu Yan.
"For someone who rides a bicycle that looks like they got it for free from a charity shop, you won't be able to afford such an amount." He apathetically told her while Yu Yan found his words to be a little offensive.
"Charity?? This bicycle is the latest brand, I saved a lot of money to buy it so you have no right to call it charity!" She spoke back leaving the middle aged man bewildered by her response, meanwhile his young master barely paid attention to everything she said as he wrote something down on a piece of paper.
"Well I think you should start saving enough money to fix your damages." He retorted, handing her the paper while Yu Yan curiously eyed it before taking hold of it, an awe expression crossed her face at the number of zero's written on it.
"Wait, why are there so many zeros?" She asked hesitantly while he towered over her making her shrink away, gazing into his dark and spellbinding eyes. She didn't know why but he felt familiar, he looked so domineering without even trying.
"Those zero's are the amount you're going to pay me, I hope your piggy bank has enough savings already."
She suddenly stomped her feet on the ground, okay so yes she did some minor accident to his car but she won't let him speak to her like this.
"You have no right to make fun of me, I already apologized for a hundredth time but clearly you aren't worth any of it cause you're just like the rest of the wealthy people out there, selfish and overbearing fools!" There she said it.
The middle aged driver nearly passed out after hearing her call his young boss a fool, does this young miss know what she's getting herself into? his young master on the other hand knitted his brow at her, the surprise evident on his charming dark eyes.
"What did you call me?"
She folded her arms, not willing to be intimidated by his impassive tone or bewitched by his gaze. "You heard me before so I'm not going to repeat myself, as for the money I'll find ways and pay them to you, hmph!!"
Turning away from him, she picked up her bicycle while his unwavering gaze never averted from her, normally he would have broken anyone who dared to call him that in two but her's was an entirely different case.
"We'll see." He placed his hand on her bicycles handlebar, stopping her from leaving while she met his gaze with a glare, he tilted his head at her.
"We'll definitely see each other again and when we do, you better pay me back."
He let go of her bicycle and got into his car, his speechless driver got in as well and just like that, they were off. Yu Yan shook her head hopelessly.
"In his dreams will we ever cross paths again!" Luckily her bicycle wasn't damaged, so she got on it and left.
Inside the Porsche car, Yi Fan took off his mask and his lips curled slightly into a formidable smile, an equally handsome fellow sat beside him and he paused after noticing the cunning smile on Yi Fan's lips, each time he smiled like that, they always meant something.
"Brother Fan?"
"It went well, I invited my trustee to the hotel and one more thing..." He met his friend's gaze.
"It's brother Wusheng from now on, call me brother Fan next time and I'm kicking you out!"
His friend kept quiet, not wanting to say anything after brother Fan's sudden threat.
(CHAPTER 3)
Yi Fan laid comfortably on the luxurious hotel bed, glancing through the report his trusty men had gathered about Yu Yan, seeing her every detail, the corner of his lips curled upward. Zhang Fei curiously went through the reports himself.
"Gonna admit, she's pretty." He winked at Yi Fan who sat upright, his face pokered while Zhang Fei studied his friend's expression before speaking.
"Brother F….I mean Wusheng, do you really want to do this?" He asked, knitting his brows together.
"I made a promise, I'm not going back on it."
"For someone who had the ordersity to call you a fool, just don't kill her."
Yi Fan shot him a death glare making Zhang Fei drop into a cold sweat, immediately averting his gaze, Yi Fan had always been intimidating and possessed enough cold and dark aura, even the darkness hides it shadows at his presence and throughout his whole years being with him, no one dared speak back to him but this girl…. it's impossible to meet his gaze and not shiver but this strange girl was even brave enough to call Yi Fan a fool and to make it even more shocking, Yi Fan didn't retaliate which is even more scary, God be with the girl.
Yi Fan on the other hand closed his eyes to rest as he relaxed on the bed, he couldn't stop his mind from reminiscing on how she looked.
Her small pleasant pale face depicted one with pure innocence and her big starry eyes brightened even though it held nothing but complete annoyance for him, her crop shirt leveled to her stomach with a jeans jacket draped on it, matching it with a tight jeans short. For someone so stupid, at least she had some fashion sense and even though he tried denying it, it wouldn't change the fact she was actually cute. This is the first time he's actually studied someone…...this much, his eyes opened and a sudden glare revealed in his stunning crystal-black eyes.
~
Yu Yan was heading back home from school, engaged with her phone as usual.
A brown haired boy beside her, going on about the latest sports coming up while Ying Yue adjusted her glasses, turning her fiery brown eyes at him.
"No one wants to hear you rant about sports Kang Joon, it's annoying and boring." She frowned at him, making her words clear with her expression before returning her gaze back to her phone.
"You're boring!" He replied finding her words hurtful meanwhile Yu Yan was currently busy searching online for the attractive stranger she crossed paths with yesterday. It's a sad thing she doesn't know his name, it'll be difficult to know just how important he really is.
Kang Joon placed an arm around her shoulder jolting her out of her thoughts.
"You're lost Yu Yan, what are you searching for?" He curiously asked, stealing a peep into her phone.
"Probably something that'll distract her from hearing your stupid talks about sports." Ying Yue blatantly said earning a glare from Kang Joon.
"That's it!" he made his way towards her, trying to grab her into a choking position but Ying Yue retaliated, placing him between her arms and choking the life out of him instead.
"Don't you dare try to fight with me or I'll squish you like a ball."
Yu Yan rolled her eyes at their act and freed poor Kang Joon from Ying Yue's grip, who immediately gasped for some air.
"You two always fight once you see a chance to."
"She started it, she looks all delicate and innocent but she's the worst human being."
Ying Yue adjusted her glasses and smiled at his remark. "You're welcome, it's just hard to accept the fact that I'm awesome and you're awful, the truth always hurts." She eyed him and walked out, dragging the already confused Yu Yan along.
"Hey wait for me!"
Yu Yan sighed deeply, yes this are the two besties she got blessed with, Kang Joon who is all about fun and sports, Ying Yue, the beautiful one with brains, all the nerds with glasses are the perfect targets for bullies but Ying Yue was a different being, she appears fragile and innocent but just one blow from her fist is enough to make you see the world flash double in front of your eyes.
After a lot of deep thinking, Yu Yan finally asked.
"Do you guys know of any important person who usually wears a mask?" She asked while Ying Yue turned her attention to her.
"Like a celebrity?"
"There are lots of celebrities who wear masks, which one are you specifically talking about?"
Yu Yan sharply flicked his forehead. "If I knew his name would I have asked?" She eyed him and walked ahead, not sure why she's frustrated.
"Hah!" Ying Yue teased him while the bullied Kang Joon sulked behind.
Finally making it back home, she couldn't wait to get some rest, her home wasn't huge but it was comfortable. Practically made up of two floors, the first floor was used by her father who was into bakery business while the second floor was where they lived. Lazily going up the stairs, she walked in and found her father in the kitchen making desserts.
"Oh, you're back." He smiled warmly at her, a smile that never failed to cheer her up. Yu Yan walked up to him giving him a hug.
"Hello father."
"How was school?"
"Mmm, same."
She was staring at the cupcakes he had made and he knew very well where his daughter's eyes had landed.
"Go freshen up and come down for dinner."
Nibbling on her bottom lip, she secretly reached for one of the cupcakes and snatched hold of it, her father shaking his head hopelessly at her act. Yu Yan has always been fun fond of seizing snacks or dessert anytime he made one since she was little, his fault he didn't drive her out of it.
"Yu Yan."
"These are good cupcakes." She stated, already making her way towards her room, avoiding her father's scolding gaze.
She took a step in and laid flat on her bed, her room was painted in purple, purple bed, purple posters, even her stuffed toys were purple, it's like a room swallowed with purple and a touch of white, she sighed and gazed at her phone.
"Why am I even bothered about that total stranger, he can go to hell for all I care." She pouted stubbornly and tossed her phone aimlessly on the bed.
The sun's early morning light gloriously made its way into the cloudless blue sky, casting a luminescent glow through Yu Yan's white transparent cotton, kissing her small pretty face. She stirred lazily on the bed, turning to the other side, not willing to get up from her bed when a knock followed on her door and she nearly felt like crying, gosh she hates morning.
"Yu Yan, I know you intentionally didn't set your alarm so I woke up early to wake you as well, get ready for school."
Her father's voice made her sit up on the bed, her hair scattered all over face looking disheveled, her father is so smart when it comes to handling her, she got out of bed with a yawn wearing her pink bunny slippers, scratching her head as she made it to her bathroom, time for another boring day.
(CHAPTER 4)
Successfully making it to school on time, well not a hundred percent success, she's a minute late but according to her records, this is the earliest she's actually been to school and she felt proud.
Parking her bicycle at a parking spot for students, she got down from it gazing at the tall exquisite building in front of her, inhaling the cool summer fresh air and letting out a satisfied sigh before walking into Jixia high school. Jixia high school was one of the most famous high schools in Hangzhou and also the most beautiful as it was made entirely out of glass, almost all the teenager's of every noble family schooled here and she was just lucky enough to be accepted in such a prestigious school regardless of her background.
She made it past the school's gate and hurried through the beautiful front yard, making sure there were no errors with her dressing, she could tolerate anything but not a bad dress day.
The Jixia high uniform consisted of a sky-blue long sleeve jacket, draped over a white short sleeve shirt, which was tucked inside her sky-blue high-waist skirt that barely got past her knee, her white socks were clean and carefully hidden under her white sneakers, as usual her hair was tied in a ponytail, bouncing behind her as she walked.
"Another boring school day." She brought out her phone, taking a cute selfie before making her way into the building, she strode into the school's refined hallway and as usual, it has always been hectic.
Nerds hurrying about with a book in hand, some students skating around the hall premises, some listening to music with headphones on while resting on their locker, a normal routine by the students.
She'd regularly find Ying Yue and Kang Joon chilling at their lockers but they weren't there which meant they haven't showed up at school yet, she is definitely adding that to her breaking record.
The bell suddenly rang loudly to everyone's ear gaining their attention. Yu Yan could already tell it was time for class and lazily headed to her class which was, year 3 class C.
It was almost filled with students on their respective seats when she arrived, a sigh escaped from her lips and step by step, she made it to her seat which was at the back. Well not exactly, she wasn't in the front, or in the back, keeping herself locked in the middle at the end of the wall, an extra seat was left empty beside her and they belonged to Kang Joon.
"That i***t is late, I doubt they'll show up at school today." She pouted in annoyance and took her seat, she would have certainly escaped it if her father didn't pay too much attention to everything she does these days.
The class was soon filled up with students while Yu Yan rested her head on her table, waiting for the teacher to come in since she had no one to talk to and besides, if she speaks to anyone, they were obviously going to ignore her since she wasn't of their 'nobility' as they would call it.
Yu Yan noticed the whole class suddenly went silent which she depicted to have been a teacher who walked in, slowly raising her head from the table, her sleepy gaze landed on two students who majestically walked in, dressed in the Jixia high uniform.
She blinked to clear her blurry gaze and once her vision became vivid, her eyes widened at the sight of two handsome students who walked in, she blinked profusely at them as her gaze landed on the raven black haired guy, his fathomless, crystal-black optic emitting such cold aura no one even dared speak as he walked in, meanwhile the girls where already drooling over the two handsome fellow as they stood in front of the class, but there was something about the raven haired guy that made her feel odd, his gaze and aura felt too forbidden.
He paused, standing in front of the class the moment all eyes landed on him, as always he had grabbed the attention and suddenly regretted not wearing his mask, Xiu Zhang Fei leaned closer to him and whispered.
"Do you think she's here?"
Yi Fan's searching gaze landed on the timid Yu Yan who also met his gaze.
Realizing he locked gaze with her, she immediately lowered her head, gazing at the book she placed in front of her table, he scoffed and made his way towards her with one hand shoved into his trouser pocket emanating a strikingly good physique it was hard for the students to tear their eyes of him, noticing he was heading her way from the corner of her eyes, for reasons she couldn't tell, her knees weakened as she alarmingly hid under her table, everything about that fellow and his stunning appearance looked familiar, she felt too intimidated by him. Yi Fan strode over to her seat but she had completely buried herself under her table, tilting his head so he could gaze at the jejune Yu Yan who hid like a frightened kitty, her face flushed the moment she met…
his attractive and lean physique in the dark..
