Chapter 3 Wanting a New Mommy

906 Words
Claire stood at the door, taking a deep breath to calm herself before pushing it open. She glanced at her watch. At this hour, Leo should still be home, not yet at school. She still had a chance to see him. Claire walked through the house but found nobody else. Her heart skipped a beat, and an ominous feeling spread through her chest. "Where's Leo?" Claire turned to Mandy, the housekeeper in the kitchen, her voice urgent. "Did he go to school?" Mandy looked awkward, her eyes downcast as she replied softly, "Ma'am, they suddenly decided to take Leo on a trip to the island last night. They left early this morning." Claire frowned, disbelief creeping into her voice. "What? An island trip? Why didn't he tell me?" Mandy shook her head, replying, "Mr. Williams just told me to pack his bags. He didn't mention telling you." Claire's hand clutched her chest, panic rising within her. What if Leo hadn't brought his insulin? Leo needed insulin every day to regulate his blood sugar, or else he could be in serious danger! She quickly pulled out her phone and called Felix. The cold voicemail greeting echoed in her ear, "Sorry, your call cannot be completed at this time..." Claire's fingers trembled, fear gnawing at her as she imagined what could happen if Leo didn't have his insulin. She bit her lip and dialed Leo's smartwatch instead. Luckily, it connected quickly. "Hello, Leo, it's Mommy." Claire tried to keep her voice steady, though her heart was racing. But to her surprise, it wasn't Leo on the other end. It was Julia, her voice dripping with mockery. "Oh, you finally remembered you have a son?" Claire's anger flared, but she kept her tone controlled. "Let Leo talk to me." Julia's voice turned sarcastic. "Have you no shame? Why are you interrupting our vacation? Leo's doing just fine without you, the unfit mother." Claire's grip on the phone tightened, barely holding back her urge to yell. "I'll say it again. Let Leo talk to me." Julia's voice softened, but it was still laced with amusement. "Since you're so desperate to talk to him, I'll ask him for you." Claire could hear Julia's voice drifting farther away, and then she heard Julia call out, "Leo, Claire's on the phone. Do you want to talk to her?" Then Leo's voice came through clearly. "I don't want to talk to her!" Claire's heart shattered, and she couldn't stop the tears from streaming down her face. "Leo, Mommy just wants to make sure you have your insulin. I'm really worried about you..." Before Claire could say more, Julia's voice cut in, mocking her cruelly. "Did you hear that? Leo doesn't want to talk to you. Stop forcing him. He finally gets to enjoy a trip, and now you want him to deal with you? I feel so sorry for him." With that, Julia ended the call. The line went dead with the click of a hang-up. Claire stood frozen, staring at the phone in her hand as it slipped from her grasp and fell to the floor. For a moment, she didn't know what to do. In the end, she just sent a text to Felix, reminding him to give Leo his insulin. Claire: Felix, make sure Leo gets his insulin on time. It's really important. Don't forget. After sending the message, Claire's unease didn't subside. She slowly walked to Leo's room, hoping for some comfort. But when she stepped inside, she was struck by a sense of dread. Leo's medical kit was gone. At least that meant he had his insulin, but the sight of everything else in the room made her heart drop. All the gifts she'd given Leo were tossed carelessly in a corner. His favorite toys and books, things he used to cherish, were discarded like trash. The photo frame on the nightstand no longer held a picture of her and Leo. It had been replaced by a photo of Felix, Julia, and Leo, with Claire's image cruelly erased. Claire walked over to the wall covered in Leo's doodles. Her eyes went to the words Leo had written, "This year's wish: to have a new mommy who loves me, and to get a healthy kidney!" She collapsed to her knees, pain shooting up from them as they hit the hard floor. But that physical pain was nothing compared to the agony tearing through her heart. She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face, her heart breaking into pieces. Her own child hated her, and she hadn't seen it coming. When did it all change? Was it when she started giving him shots and medicine? But everything she did was for his health! Claire cried uncontrollably. The pain of being betrayed by her husband was something she could endure, but the thought that her own flesh and blood loathed her? That was unbearable. Claire's heart felt like it was being ripped apart. She couldn't believe that Leo's wish was for a new mommy, for her to leave. After spending two hours in Leo's room, she finally walked out, her face pale and lifeless. She tilted her head back, blinking fast to push the tears away. If her child truly wanted to betray her, then she might as well never have had him... She walked downstairs and said, in a flat voice, "Mandy—pack my things. I'm leaving this house."
