Chapter Nineteen

The sound of panting and whining filled the air. Coffee grounds were pungent along with the smell of blood and urine. Quinn blinked, it was too dark to see. The ground was hard and cold, like steel. As his eyes slowly adjusted, he noticed the outlines of other animals locked in crates. They were all large canines. Slowly Quinn moved his feet beneath him before standing. Clang! His head cracked against the cage ceiling. He couldn’t quite stand up. Quinn whimpered, his head throbbed, and he retreated to the cold ground. Across the way a door opened, and the trickle of light shone on the dank room. There were dried blood spots on the floor and on the cages. The dogs were skinny and scarred. None were Sawyer.
